  1. Re:You can get an Xbox 360 for $200 on PS3, Xbox Having Disappointing Christmas Season · · Score: 1

So, you are saying that it's bogus that if you have the extended warranty, say from BestBuy, and you go back with your broke system and they replace it on the spot with a brand new one and all you had to do was walk in the store? Interesting. Let's see here...manufacturer warranty means you send the product off to get fixed and are without the product for x amount of time; extended warranty mans you get a REPLACEMENT on the spot. Yup, you are right, totally bogus. Complete waste of money. Granted, there are products that are not worth getting the extended warranty and it also depends on how the warranty is handled. For example, an extended warranty on say a laptop at Circuit City means that if your hard drive goes out, you have to call some jerk that is highly trained to NOT honor the warranty and then send the laptop off to be fixed if you manage to convince him to honor the service plan...same warranty from BestBuy, you bring the laptop to the store, they pull a drive from the shelf and replace it on the spot. Now, certainly it's much less of a deal now that there is a "real" warranty from M$ vs the token warranty that they did have. But when it was only 90 days, spending the amount of a new game to keep the thing working for 2 years seems like a bargain to me, but then again I don't have really good luck with things like that anyway. By the way, they are selling a POS, the 360's have an extremely high failure rate which is what they were trying to tell you. The people that work there are called sales people for a reason, they are supposed to sell and part of that is making sure you were offered services such as an extended warranty. Some 40% to 60% of consumers actually WANT the extended warranty and some 20% to 30% make an extended warranty part of the decision to purchase a product at a certain retailer, in other words, they won't buy from a store that does not offer this service. When I make my purchase soon for my new home theater amp, I want an extended warranty on the thing that will cover power surges (yes I know they make surge protectors), it's called peace of mind. Don't get the warranty if you don't want it. Just say "I am not interested and don't believe that the cost is worth it, but thank you for offering."

Hasn't this one already been done with AutoPatcher? I am still gonna play with this and see how it compares. AutoPatcher works fairly well, usually there are only a few items left to download after starting with a fresh install of SP2. For one, something like this that automates downloading the patches to be installed on multiple computers really helps out with the time it takes to patch a system. One download vs the 7 I will be doing here in a little bit is nice. Also along these lines is Update Accelerator for IPcop. Basically, it's a web cache for Windows Updates. You download the updates once, it stores them on the IPcop system and they are delivered from IPcop in the future, makes things take a lot less time and it's free (minus some old hardware and time).

Wait, what about the extremely damaging "losses" they "suffer" when I let someone borrow a DVD? Oh my! There's another 2-3 billion that they would have made because OBVIOUSLY if I had not let my brother borrow my copy of one of the stupid, remake, cookie cutter, crappy movies that I made a mistake in buying, he would have bought a copy. Clearly, they have underestimated the losses here. Clearly.

I am honestly not trying to start a flame war or be a troll, just wanted to say what I feel. In some ways, I don't want the adware crap companies like 180 to go away. I make a lot of extra money off of companies like them. Heck, after I left my last job, this sort of crapware kept me employed for a few months until I got another decent job. We all know it's about money and money only. You think that ANY of these people care one bit about the damage to people's computer they cause, or they money these people spend to get rid of the crapware? Hell no! Just like ANY company now days, as long as the big-wigs and/or share holders are richER that's all that matters and all that EVER will matter. Call it capitalism if you wish, but I call it greed and the day I never make a dime from the crap they put on people's computers will be a great day indeed. Good riddance to bad rubbish! Even if I won't get extra money.

Wal-Mart for one. I had a freelance job replacing motherboards on these systems with those bad CAP's. We had to take down each register, open the case, check the MB, replace if needed, and then upate the systems serial number. The thing that ticked me was that when the system was booting, it said "IPL in progress". The only reason I know what on earth an IPL is was that I am a mainframe computer operator. hehe

Boy, some real good ones. Let's see, Space Ship One can be scalled UP, that means made larger and going higher with more payload. So, not exactly short term if it is leading to something else. Task specific ships vs. do-it-all ships are like jack of all trades, master of none. Having a higher number of special purpose ships that cost less to design, build and operate are better than one over priced ship that is supposed to do it all better but can't. Space Ship One my not have looked innovative to you, but you need to look deeper. The propulsion system, the fuel it uses expecially, have never been used before for one. The re-entry method had never been tried before. The launch method had only been used for the X ships (I can't recall for sure if the X-15 crossed the space threshold or not). The avionics situation was simple, K.I.S.S. They had a basic system to orient the ship, simply the pilot over-corrected and put the ship into a ROLL (not a pitch you fool, pitch is up and down) which was obviously able to be tollerated and the flight continued. Now, I am not sure how "catastrophic" the ROLL was seeing as the guy made it to the target altitude, then regained control and landed the ship safely. Catastrophic is what happened when NASA ignored all the engineers on a cold morning and caved to the pressure of policitians or when there was a large chunk of frozen foam that smashes into the leading edge of a wing and they just decided it was OK and didn't even bother to check it out. Please, get your facts inline before you dis something as extrodinary and innovative as Space Ship One.

Exactly. Most ATM's are frame relay and are ONLY directly connected to the bank's system, in the case of the bank I work for a Stratus system. We could have done TCP/IP, but didn't. Even over TCP/IP, they still would not have been on the open internet, only on the banks private T1 line.

I asked that myself when the bank I work for started upgrading our ATM's to 3DES. Some are still OS/2 but some are windows bassed. And it uses regular Windows, not embeded, it's straight Windows 2000. To tell you the truth, I acutally liked the Windows based ATM. From a stand point of having to hold the tellers hand over the phone because they are not trained properly, it makes it easier on us because the Windows ATM actually have help screens and short movie clips that can walk the undertrained (read stupid) teller through the proceedure of properly inserting a cassette of money (as if it were that difficult). The OS/2 ATMs are only character menu driven, the Windows ATM's are all graphical. The actual screens the customer sees are actually web pages so it's easy to make them look how you want and not be a programmer.
