I was talking to Darwin about this just the other day. For the record, he has a LiveJournal (he's evolvingdarwin over there).

He says it's because there is no selection in effect to kill off the sheeple. They'd die quickly in the wild, but they have ridden to dominance thanks to the intelligentista having compassion for their lessers.

So, basically, it's our fault that there are so many stupid people, as we've created an environment that doesn't demand that they think or die. Me, I blame the Baby Boomers.

I'm just worried that they're going to discontinue their T-Max film developer, which has historically been my chemistry of choice. Nothing against speed processing with Dektol, of course, but keeping it at 68 degrees F throughout the process while agitating constantly is a bit of a pain. Not to mention the pain of mixing up Dektol (a couple liters of water at 90-100 degrees F and constantly stiring).

It sounds unlikely, but not having to worry about the mouse and keyboard cords has improved my ability to get work done on my incredibly small desk. Of course, ditching the old ergonomic keyboard also helped, but the big thing is that I'm no longer tripping over the mouse and keyboard cords when I leave my room, as my computer is right next to my door due to a lack of anywhere else to put it.

I use the LX 700 (which I bought earlier this month) as my keyboard and mouse. I don't have any problems with reception with the reciever on top of my box, which is about the only place where I have room for it, due to my desk size.

Furthermore, I use Linux, where the drivers aren't compatable, but the hardware works very well. The side buttons on the mouse even work as an extra center and right click, which comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the function keys don't work, but that's not a problem. I wouldn't use them even if I was using Windows.

Also, the mouse fits my hand quite well, which is rare for a mouse.

I'd use something else, but alas, there aren't too many great browsers for Windows. K-Meleon doesn't agree with me, and I refuse to use Exploder for any reason.

That said, I've turned off the option to use the IE engine on "trusted" sites. It's something it shows you on the first startup. I'm trying to convince my mom to use it, as she needs ActiveX for a few things, and it's the only option to have ActiveX when you need it but not when you don't. Yeah, the people she works for won't set up a webmail service, instead, they prefer to use ActiveX scripts to read their e-mail, which they require all their employees to maintain. It sucks from my standpoint, and I'd set up a mail forwarder if they'd let me do that, just so that she'll STFU about not being able to check her work e-mail in Firefox.

My sister, on the other hand, is a Microsoft whore. I'd slap her, as would my father, but my mom won't let us, because she still thinks that MS is a good thing in the computer world.

I like the idea of being able to have my own site that allows others to download a gzipped tarball of a bunch of free software that includes almost all the dependencies, so that my audience doesn't have to go around hunting down various things (like a JVM) from other places on the Internet.

My only major problem with GCJ that I can think of right now is that I don't know if there's a Windows version, and if there is, how well it works. I may be a GNU user (of course, on Linux), but most of the people I'm trying to introduce to FLOSS are Windows users.
