This comes from over a year of working with an old HP PSC 950 on FC1 and every version of Ubuntu through Breezy.

Well, using , Debian is the most popular base for distributions. In fact, they list 129 distributions at this time that are based on Debian. This includes some rather heavy hitting distributions like Knoppix, MEPIS/SimplyMEPIS, and Ubuntu, as well as some nonstandard Debian distros like Xandros and Linspire (both of which make me feel dirty just for even mentioning them in the same breath as Debian).

However, most of those distros are binary compatable with Debian, with the exceptions of Xandros and Linspire, which take a bit of work. Yeah, even Ubuntu is compatable, if you can work out the library dependencies.

Agreed, the sale of free software is a bit difficult due to the redistrobution bit. However, it's not completely impossible. Look at RHEL: the source RPMs are the basis of several distrobutions.

Of course, I do see the humor in your initial post, as well as your point. I'm just being incredibly pedantic. Free software is really a case of perfect competition as economics puts it: there is no long term economic profit in making free software. There's a reason why they restrict it.

With large volume books by big name authors (JKR is currently the biggest name out there right now), strict release dates are set to make sure that the giant suppliers (who pay more to get quicker shipping and more copies) don't snatch up the customers from smaller bookstores by having the book two to three weeks earlier than the smaller stores.

Basically, it's there to make sure that every bookstore has an equal chance to make a sale on a high-demand book. Normal books aren't like this: they just get put on the shelf whenever they arrive. You've got to be somebody BIG (we're talking multiple titles on the bestseller lists at the same time here) to earn the right to a release date.

I have friends who used to manage bookstores. That's why this is done. It's simply a way of leveling the playing field so that small stores can compete.
