I've always had Real Player (or whatever they were calling it at the time). It's hard to avoid Real's content on the web. In fact it's much more prevalent than anything else and on occasion is the only choice one is offered at a given site. Given the choice I choose QuickTime or Windows Media, but when I don't have a choice.....
Yes I have actually. It's almost as easy to install as Windows. I still contend Windows (or Mac OS) is far easier for the "average" user than Linux. OK, so you get Mandrake installed. Then what? I'm telling you I know of many many people who find Windows "difficult". Imagine what they would be facing switching to Linux.
If your IT department authorizes downloads of SP2 by the average user, they have issues. This is something that should be installed by someone from IT. That's what the enterprise edition (which everyone has been using so far as it's been the only one offered) is out there.
If Linux does finally "take over" then great! I won't hold my breath though. It's still too damn hard for the average Joe to use. I have a hard enough time convincing Windows users to ditch Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox! Do you think they are going to switch from Windows to Linux?
Get real!
Don't get me wrong, I love Linux. It's just not ready for the average user.
Who says they are creating new rules? The internet is not a product, business or person. Therefore, why should internet be capitalized? I've never been one to capitalize it and am often "corrected" by software spell-checkers. I'm glad to know I've been vindicated!:-)
" There is nothing you mentioned here that I can't get in the Linux world for FREE."
I guess you missed the part where he mentioned Microsoft Office. Like it or not, it's still the best out there. OpenOffice.org is good and is the best out there in the Open Source world. But it's still not as good as Microsoft Office.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Linux. But it still has a way to go in the user-friendly department before it can catch on with people who aren't geeks (as I am).
In an sizable enterprise with a decent IT department, deployments like this are done by the IT folk and not tne users. Therefore, you'd not have 20,000 downloads of SP2.
The difference in this case though it that Microsoft had the resources to push Internet Explorer (bundling it with Windows and later making it part of the Windows OS). The Mozilla Foundation does not. Mozilla's products are getting more popular strictly by word of mouth.
However, the fact remains that the average user out there really doesn't care about this stuff and/or isn't savvy enough to know there are better options like Firefox. I've mentioned Firefox (and the well publicized problems with Internet Explorer) to any number of people and basically get blank stares.
Even worse, Mozilla has two browser products. The Suite and Firefox and that confuses people as well.
So unless Mozilla can figure a way to better market itself, Internet Explorer will remain King of the Web Browsers.
And one more thing, most users can't be bothered with downloading software, especially if they already have a program (i.e. Internet Explorer) that seemingly meets their needs.
Sad, but it's a fact of life. Meanwhile, I look forward to Firefox 1.0 next month.:-)
I'll have to disagree with you there. I think everyone should be taught typing, word processing and spreadsheets. I was in school before the last two existed (1970's). I've picked up a number of skills with Word Processing just by playing with the software. Spreadsheets, are still gibberish to me. So being taught type, word processing and spreadsheets in school is a most excellent idea. One of these days I'm taking an Excel class....
Aaah, yes but ins spite of the fact that Windows is easier to operate and offeres more choisces in good quality software, Linux rules, right? ;-)

So what to you suggest (and no switching to a differet OS doesn't count)?

And in spite of this, brain-dead-asshole Maricopa county voters keep putting him back into office...
The camera's were thankfully taken down pending the outcome of the court decision. And it now appers they will stay down.
I see no metion of Windows Gaim there.
Now that was funny!
Mods were are you? Doesn't that post rate a "funny"? LOL

Uhhh, I thought it was the other way around. Apple acquired NeXT.

I find it odd that IBM's in-house PCs aren't running OS/2....
or you could probably get it on one of the P2P networks with less hassle.
Yeah, I'm wondering why we should care.
Most of the people I'm speaking of (OK, all of them - at this point) are those I know online. Standing over/next to them, isn't an option...

It's actually not my computer. Mine (temporarily out of service) has Win2k. I'd have XP Pro but I can't afford it right now.
Dubya is an ignorant, arrogant, insenstive, war-monger. Anybody But Bush!
hummm. I've never noticed that..
& I'm running Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040803 Firefox/0.9.3 Mnenhy/0.6.0.101
How would you keep track of both though?
