Back in 1977 (I was 17 at the time). I ran away from home and stole money from my mom to do so. How did I steal the money? I visited several branches of her bank and used her ATM card (I knew the PIN) to withdraw money at each branch. I visited several branches because each machine had a $200.00 withdrawal limit per card, per day.
This was before ATMs (at least at this bank) were networked. Had they been networked like they were later, I'd have not been allowed to withdraw what amounted to a total of $800.00 that day.
If you read the article, it pointed out that ATMs cost banks
money and that the number of human tellers and bracches has increased in spite of the
popularity of ATMs.
The services you specified that banks charge you for (when using
a human teller), such as casheir's check,s are services they have
charged for, for as long as I remember (unless you have one of their
"special" accounts or keep a ton of money deposited with them in
savings, CDs and what have you).
Nothing is free and banks are in business to make money, so they
will do what they can to make it. Frankly my biggest beef with banks
are the obscene fees they chargee for checking overdrafts. Their cost
is a fraction of what they charge most customers.. I can live with fees
for using a human when automatoin can do the same job. It's the other
stuff that gripes me.
Thanks to Debit Cards (as the article pointed out) I hardly use
ATM's anymore. If I need cash I make a purchase with my Debit
card, enter my PIN on the merchant's terminal (generally @ a Grocery
Store) and ask for cash back. I was going to the merchant anyway and it
saves an extra stop at the ATM.
I'm surprised I've not found any other major bank (besides mine) that offers both free
internet banking and free
online bill paying. Most charge for at least one of the two services.
How are they going to eliminate Internet Explorer without eliminating Windows? Sure, you can remove shortcuts and set Firefox as the default browser, but as long as the OS is still Windows, IE will still be there.
And if you're so concerned about Microsoft products why do you have a hotmail address?
My goal is to get my news and not spend all day looking for
it. I can start with my
local paper's site and then move on to other sources for more in
depth coverage and/or different news.
The goal of most businesses is to make money and newspapers are
no exception. If they keep a reader on their web site longer they get
more page views and therefore, generate more ad revenue. I want
my local paper to do well. Newspapers are not the profit centers the
once were and many have scaled back operations over the years. I don't
want to see this happen any more.
People just don't care. That's the bottom line. Most computer users don't have the experience of your typical/. reader and th are just not interested. There are things in life that are just more important to them. As long as they don't care, IE will rule even though it's inferior.
I've been trying for eons to convert people to Firefox and they simply *don't care* enough to go to the trouble.
They know little about computers and don't feel they want to or need to know much more.
This is pretty much the attitude of the majority of users out there. It's sad, but true.
At least if IE were not built into windows they could be forced to choose a browser to download. But it's too late for that now.
However, even with that choice Microsoft has $$$$ to market it. Mozilla does not have that money to market it's product. Just like in the IM wars. AIM is king, but it's the most inferior of all the IM options out there. Unfortunately it has Time Warner behind it.
I just moved back to Phoenix after having been away for 8 years. I'll have to seek these places out (starting in mid-October..lol). Thanks for the info.
I'd rather have the 20 CDS (and maybe 20 more over the next 18-20 months. Then I can make my fave tracks MP3s, burn them to CD-R and listen to them on my CD/MP3 player (along with the songs I download).
Speaking for myself and those I know - none of us have MP3 players (ok I just got one - A CD/MP3 player hybrid) or laptops and I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands out there, just like us...
I'm with you on the lack of need to carry that much music around with you. Thatis why a 700 mb disk (CD-R) (or two) filled w/mp3s is fine for my needs.
As far as the spare $300.00 goes - Your respone was just rude. You may find this shocking but millions live from paycheck to paycheck and millions (like me) are "between jobs".
So.. why not learn?
aah, so you went from dll hell to dependancy hell...
Yeah, I'd guess it was ignorance.
Who's more irritating then?
I could run circles around one of our IT people and I have no training in the fields whatsoever.
Which reminds me....
Drive-up ATMS with Braille? Does anyone see anything odd about this?

yeah but it's more "fun" to use the self-checkout machines. They work best when you really only have a few items (and I do mean, a few).

Hummm..
"In other words, there's nothing to fear. :) "
Unless you happen to be one of the poor slobs that loses their job due to consolidation

S
True. I'll probably get tired of the DVDs I've bought over the past few years as well. Such is life. ;-)
True you don't but if all you want is plain old coffee. Dunkan dounts has kick-ass plain old coffee (and tastier pastries to go along with it...)
I can't recall the last time I stood in line at Starbucks and overboard some ordering anything but an Espresso-based beverage (or possibly Chai).
That's not what they are really in business to sell. LOL
I'd rather have the 20 CDS (and maybe 20 more over the next 18-20 months. Then I can make my fave tracks MP3s, burn them to CD-R and listen to them on my CD/MP3 player (along with the songs I download).
Other chains? Are there other chains? Caribou Coffee is a contender in some markets but that's about it.
AFAIK, here in Phoenix, Starbucks is it (when it comes to chains).
Speaking for myself and those I know - none of us have MP3 players (ok I just got one - A CD/MP3 player hybrid) or laptops and I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands out there, just like us...
A slight exaggeration. I've not seen thousands of books at Starbucks..
;-)
Although the merger idea is intriguing.
Here's a hint: People don't go to Starbucks for plain old coffee. :-)
It's the variations on Espresso that they go there for. LOL
Reasonable prices? A $4.00 cup of coffee is reasonable? LMAO
Don't get me wrong, I often stop by for a Vite Mocha. And sometimes feel like a sucker, But hey I like the stuff!
You've lost me. Are you saying I should save my pennies and buy an iPod? Not!
You might be surprised to find that I have been buying the CDs for years.. 500 CDs don't accumulate overnight.
Mom, are you on Slashdot now?
oh and that's why I should any iPod? Cuz they are chick magnets? LMAO.
As if most of the readers here are anyway....

I had a job once, it's in India now..
