You know, every post here has the user id included in it. The relative newness of users on/. is directly indicated. I know its supposed to be funny, but yesterday what I really found funny was someone with a user id over 700000 posting this quip to a response written by someone with a user id around 70000. No, that person isn't exactly "New here".
On the Myth tv users mailing list there are some people who researched this. Their conclusions were that the code is indeed on the box and on the iso disks. Most of the source files still had myth somewhere in the name.
An interesting note from the mailing list is the realization that if these people make any interesting modifications, it can be rolled back into the main myth project.
Certain versions of the nvidia driver cannot do overscan on the TV out. I think I'm using the one that is 3 releases old at the moment. I can get overscan to work, but still have a small black bar at the bottom of the screen. The newest drivers do indeed put a black border around the whole picture.
The problem is that when you stop subsidizing the government run telco with you tax dollars and sell it off to one of the big monopolies, the extra money you end up paying them make the tax subsidies look like spare change.
The neatest increase was when they rescrambled the channel linup AND increased rates without announcing anything before hand. A card showing the new lineup could be found in the much larger bill the day after they made the change.
The money had to come from somewhere, and those taxpayers are now not spending it on the things they may have wanted. The jobs associated with that spending disappear, balancing the jobs created by the new goverment spending. The net effect is not to create jobs, but instead to change what this money produced from desired consumer goods to manned space spectaculars.
But in reality the net effect of the space initiative will probably create more desired consumer goods than more consumer spending will. Look at everything that came about because of the Apollo program
Imagine how expensive it would be to drive down the highway if it was run by private entities. It would either be incredibly expensive to drive on good roads, or you could "save" money driving on really bad roads (but you'd still pay).
I see no difference between the interstate highway system and telecomunications. This is one thing government generally doesn't get involved in, but I don't think its a problem if they do.
Many government run utilities are more responsive to their customers than private ones (which is a really scary thought).
You had me reading right up until that communist BS.
You are right about motivation and the workforce, though. But wrong on capitalism. What is needed is not an "end to all money", but a move to computer science as a professional endeavour, not a move to it being a trade. The unmotivated you talk of only really want CS to be a trade. The people, like you, who care about new ideas and excellence in what you do want CS to be professional, like doctors.
What you need to do is make your own path and keep doing what you enjoy. My current job used to have a lot of freedom to make decisions and move things to new technologies and methods (very fun). The new corporate culture is one of locked down standards and an alomst manufacturing worker style of IT processes. True there's less suprise in what is happening in the IT environment, but theres also less ability to solve complex problems facing the business. I know that someday I will be working for myself as a professional in IT doing consulting or providing services for businesses. I think it is the future of IT and where everything will be heading anyway. It is the route to the more professional environment. It sounds like you would be well suited for that environment as well.
What I really love is watching the stories on slashtdot come in. You've got one story on how the space inititive is too expensive. Then the next story about how there are no tech. jobs in the US. Then another story about how we should spend our money on something instead of space exploration. In further news US jobs moving to other countries. See a pattern yet?
The new space iniitiave will dump those billions of dollars into the economy (into the tech. economy specifically). Most of that money will go pay for workers in the program who will be in the US, since space still also has a strategic interest as well.
When people say "better things to spend the money" on, you have to realize that if you mean welfare type programs, they'll be hiring bureaucrats and social workers, not tech. workers.
I understand that, espically the debit card stuff, but even with a credit card I would have had to call the credit card company to get charges cancelled and wasted time there too.
I think the original poster in this thread had a great idea about transaction keys for authorization. In my case and with a credit card too, they would have gotten only 1 key and been only able to make one charge.
I know credit card companies are willing to eat the loss on fraud charges, but we're still paying to cover those losses through interest and other charges the credit card companies have.
Monetary transactions in general could be much much more secure than they currently are.
Then you're lucky. I got double charged, at a pizza place incedentially, in one of those new "instant check" tranactions where they just use your checking account number to get your money.
The clerk screwed up and charged us twice. The company responsible for handling this business' transactions saw the one cancelled tranaction and put a flag on my checking account. Over a month later I get told I can't use a check at another store because of this flag. After wragling with check cashing company, talking to the accountant for the pizza place, and threatining to close all of my accounts at my bank (for failing to be of any use whatsoever), the issue finally got resolved.
But, it was not just a simple matter. The checking transaction handling company was ready to get a collection agency. And most of the players involved didn't give a damn about me being charged double. If not for the accountant at the pizza place I would have been forced to pay the extra money or have my credit rating ruined.
I personally believe that if we can't make it back to the Moon and establish a base there that we will NEVER get to Mars.
The moon needs to be the proving ground for the technology needed to get to Mars.
This weapons platform gibberish is just the rantings of Bush haters.
If you really want NASA to succeed it needs long range plans like Bush's proposal. AND it needs the opposition party not to fight them. The timelines for going to Mars are so long that political machinations need to be kept out of the equation or Mars exploration just becomes something to kill off the next time the opposition party takes office.
Almost everything coming from SCO lately fits this category. The verocity of their claims is what got a gag order on SCO in Germany for attacking Linux users.
I've got to say it. You're new here aren't you?

Amen, brother.
The service that moblie phone companies sell is NOT software any more than CAT 5 cable is software. They're selling you a connection to their network.
I thought Neo destryoed you Agent Smith.
That argument is just so damn lame.
You know if we manage to get this oppsing political party stuff right, maybe we can stop all manned missions and all the unmanned ones too!!
@#$%!$#% politics.

Yes it does take a lot of time. But the time I spent setting up my Myth box is worth every penny :-).

Correct, they sold out to a big fish.

The grammar checker in MS Office I hate. ;-)

They already did that with the local cable company.
Rates are up 80% since. Sure we have 10 more channels, but most of them worthless.
I WILL be at the city council meeting if they ever even hint about selling of the municipal phone company.
And yes, I do believe that the cable was sold off for a kickback-driven bargin price.

But you would think if they want to curry that sort of favor with the current adminstration, then they wouldn't sue them!
I love the way they put that "open source helps our enemies, and our laboratories can't use open source".
Who exactly is helping our enemies?

That would be veracity. -1 for me ;-)
Slander and Liable maybe?
Almost everything coming from SCO lately fits this category. The verocity of their claims is what got a gag order on SCO in Germany for attacking Linux users.
This is actually why I'm suprised that they're supposedly going after DiamlerChrysler next.
DiamlerChrysler could file a nasty countersuit in Germany. Somewhere where the courts have already started giving SCO a hard time.
If they do sue Google, it would be really cool if IBM donated some of their legal talent to Google free of charge.
I really want to see IBM crush SCO into subatomic particles.
Wow, I didn't even know there WAS a Fortran 03.
I've only ever used 77, but I knew 90 existed, I just thought it must've died off after that (I haven't used Fortran in almost 15 years).
