> I believe some are still in use in various places.
I'll give one thing for the ST; for those of you with the Moulin Rouge DVD, you'll see on the second disk interview with Mr Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) that he still uses his AtariST as his main 'development' box. Something that interested me intially, but then made sense, for as you say, if they're good enough, why replace them?
Where's my Mod points when i need them, as you'd get a +1 funny any day.. CD32 good ?
Sorry, I still hold a grudge about the CD32, as i firmly believe it was one of the decisions that contributed to the death of Amiga *sob*.
The Amiga was my first introduction to the world of computers (as you'll see if you read my journal), and i find it interesting that they bypass it. Was there a comparable personal computer in the mid 80's to early 90's? (well aside from the AtariST, and we all know who one that battle). From what i remember, the Amiga scene was huge until it suffered it's premature death (and no, i'm not holding my breath about a rebirth)..
i still believe that New Zealand story was the height of computer game technology (well up there with Doom, but hey the music in NZS was excellent so that gets the nod from me)
Hate to be a party-pooper for ya, but for as long as i can remember (and a long time before the AOL buyout) it's had the 'Built In Ads' , and i've been using Winamp since 1.4~ish.
They use it to highlight the fact that they haven't, and i don't suppose ever will, have built in ads for it. I present the Winamp3 betas as evidence for that. They will, as they have done for a long time, use the completely optional mini-browser for the meagre advertising revenue they'd recieve.
To be honest, i can't really see the negative of AOL buying RedHat. it won't mean the death of OS freedom (it's only RedHat, not Linux, if you don't like AOLRedHat, then use Debian, SuSE etc), the extra money will be useful in the development of a decent Linux desktop, and from past experience, AOL treats the subsidiary companies with a great deal of independance and respect, for instance Winamp hasn't changed considerably, neither has Netscape.
You'll find that _Mark_ Walburg wasn't in NKOTB, it was his brother Donnie.
Mark was in 'Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch' which had a little stardom in the twilight years of NKOTB. Once that little cash-cow had been sucked dry, he moved onto acting in 1993/94.
Ah, but what you have to remember is 'security but obscurity'.
Geographically, Adelaide is the least likely mainland city that would be attacked in time of war (Darwin & Perth are major ports, Melbourne & Sydney are large finacial centres and Brisbane is strategically well-placed for control of the South Pacific), and that Australia is still one of the more remote 1st world counties.
Militarily, even though we may send our troops onto foreign soil from time to time (Timor, Somalia, Afghanistan), there's been no _real_ military threat to mainland Australia since WW2 when the Japanese bombed Darwin, and 'sailed' submarines in to Sydney harbour. Also consider that the only countries that have the ability to send that kind of attack (consider distance, weaponary etc) are considered our strongest allies (US, Britain etc)
Adelaide seems an ideal place to locate a facility like this, we're manuervering ourselves as the e-capital of Australia (Motorola's SE-Asia HQ, EDS, a 802.11b network over the inner city's tourism precinct) and we're on top of some major pipes that span the country (not to mention the fact there's some very eager CS/IT graduates coming through who'd love to play in a place like this (; )
I'd hardly place the East Timor rebellion against Indonesia with the IRA, Iran/Iraq and the Afghan war.
Obviously you've never been exposed to what happened when and after indonesia invaded Timor, and IIRC no-one offered military support to the Timorese until after the referendum in 1999.
If anything that last paragraph should read
".. against Arafat, Indonesia against East Timor, so on..."
I'm holding hope that once there's a OSX release of Macromedia products (FLash, Dreamweaver) etc, it won't be long before i have absolutely no reason to boot back to windows.. thanks to gphoto2..

In statistics you'd call that a skewed population sample. Seriously do you think any self-preserving Win2k admin who wasn't keeping up with the patches, would post a message to what has to be the single most anti-microsoft community?
I agree however, there will never be one perfect operating system. There will always be, as there has always been, as many operating systems as there are purposes for runnning computers. No one organisation is ever going to get it completely right for every situation.

For those who aren't enlightened, over on kuro5hin, there's an interesting piece on the legitamacy of the 'Good Times' virus (yes, i am a karma whore).
When it was first around, alot of it seemed impossible what made it so funny to the more tech aware, and so scary to the rest. Yet these days life is beginning to imitate art, recalibration of the refrigerator -> jini eg ?
If you check back throught the latest round of federal (Australian) legislation on digital copyright, you'll find that circumvention devices are now illegal (eg PSX mod chips)
In my experience, no, they're are nothing but a huge pain in the ass. I've turned mine off, it'll almost always attempt 'predict' the most incorrect word possible, and then if you continue typing it'll just spit out rubbish... (for those with Nokia's, you can turn it off permantly by turning off the dictionary in the 'message composition' section).
Some brands have little keypads that attach to the bottom (kind of like those fold out keyboards for palm pilots), but I really don't see SMS becoming all that relevant once 3G/Wap/bluetooth, comes into widespread use.
Sonic was made up by Sega just to combat Mario and lost. I think the Sonic games suck. I havent played Crash Banicoot so I dont know now the PS versions are doing (is it PS, i dont know)
Everyone speaks of Crash being the cutesy mascot for the PSX, but i've never really understood why. The Spyro series is technically much better as a platformer (IMHO) and there are other hallmark title such as Croc or Medieval which compare to (even surpass) Sonic & Crash. So why the attention to crash?
AFAIK standard procedure for local law enforcement/military in Sth Australia is to utterly physically destory the drive (crush it, melt it...) then BUY a replacement.
Like some other people have said, it's much cheaper and securely reliable to destoy and replace the HDD, at least that way they can't cause a national security problem by loosing them behind photocopiers (see the Los Alamos incident late last year);)
It all depends how with it I am, if I'm actively watching the show, I'll watch the subtitles, if not I'll get lazy and switch on the dubbing. However, I prefer the original soundtrack, some of the dubs get pretty darn painfull after a while
If I remember correctly, couldn't one just return the CD to Dell, saying that you disagreed with the EULA and demand a refund as one is entitled to if one disagreed with it.
Then, with that refund in hand, goto [insert major software chain] and purchase a retail version. The retail version couldn't possibly have the BIOS lock on it, & it would save circumventing the BIOS hack or CD copy everytime you reinstall windows.
I can remember this tactic being used with many Linux installs.

Although I congratulate the ACCC for pushing this point, I have to wonder what repurcussions this may have on our DVD market?
It's most likely to mean legal zone modified players, however that would be in direct opposition to the new digital copyright circumvention laws.
