I have been playing around with the TINI recently, and it's pretty cool as a kind of Internet appliance. It has an onboard ethernet controller, and all you need to do is plug it into a ethernet jack. Okay, so it's not for browsing, but it does provide a cheap way of controlling stuff around your house,

I don't fully understand american universities' problems with napster et al. Here at Auckland University, we have to pay for our net connection, which essentially regulates the whole thing. We pay $0.15NZ per MByte during peak hours, $0.05NZ per MByte offpeak, as well as for all nz traffic.

Do american university students get free web access? It seems that if you had to pay, it would wipe the problem out overnight - by stopping excess use, as well as providing funding for purchasing extra bandwidth, etc.

I have used Redhat 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, Mandrake 6.1, 6.1, and I am currently getting Mandrake 7.0. I have found Mandrake to be a bit nicer mainly in it's default user settings (e.g. desktop stuff, etc.) They also have some handy programs installed , e.g kdevelop, kpackage. The pentium optimisations are nice too.

It seems that they started with redhat, but they are trying hard to develop their own identity

It is a bit of a pain not being able to develop any proprietary stuff without paying heaps. You have to think seriously about learning Qt, if you can only use it for open stuff, when at work, you are told to develop closed source. It makes you think - is this the best thing for me to spend time on learning? Do I really want to learn another way of doing things?

And you are right that there would probably be more cool apps come across. We cannot expect everything to be open source, if we want to achieve "World domination - and fast"

  6. NZ problem on Do Geeks Have a Political Voice? · · Score: 1

I think the problem here in New Zealand stems from the fact that there are so few technical people in Parliament - something like 3 or 4 out of 120. Most of our MPs are lawyers, and things like that, and just don't feel comfortable with technical subjects.

Geeks are never going to get decent representation as long as there aren't any people in power who can communicate with geeks on their (technical) level.

Most people I know can, after a little practice, type much faster than they can write.

Yes but when you live in New Zealand like me, it doesnt really matter which bit of USA they are in. Although it was good to see something happening in Australia recently, we get nothing in NZ.

Although RMS did talk at my uni last year, I had to miss it because of lectures. (Yes, some papers in Stage 3 Engineering are more important than GNU/Linux GNU/Linux GNU/Linux ...)

Hopefully we will start to see things more spread out though, as people realise that USA is not the only place Linux zealots live. After all, Redhat 6.1 is pretty much all I, and most of my fellow EEE engineers use at my uni
