I would like to have a list of serious companies using PostgreSQL for serious stuff...and what stuff it is PostgreSQL is doing. In my world, all you hear is "...MySQL...MySQL...", even in cases where the back-end is being handled by PostgreSQL.
Our three major DBs have about 13.4 million records combined, with enormous amounts of data about clients. PostgreSQL has never failed us. I work in the insurance business.
I often wondered what was so special about the iPhone. I have never got a satisfying answer.
One of the "features" I loathe about it is the fact that typical users including so called "light users" have to charge it daily. Insane...where is the time for such attention?
Why? Because the alleged shortcommings of PostgreSQL can be solved and it is far more superior to MySQL when it comes to supporting partial indexes. MySQL would not know how to handle this.
If not, how do you handle tasks like debugging, testing installations, or installing updated development tools that aren't a part of the standard corporate workstation?'
I work for a major insurance company. We work as a team with external personnel. There is always tension and in most cases, their personnel of comparable rank to ours earn more, appear to have more power over what we can or cannot do.
OpenOffice.org is a threat? I do not think so and here's why:
1: It looks aged compared to its counterpart from Microsoft
2: Still takes a while to load and looks ugly!
3: It's not as featured as Microsoft Office. Those who profess that the 80%/20% rule is what
matters do not have a clue on how human beings behave.
4: Most educational institutions and workplaces still accept Microsoft Office as the "default"
office suite...even for editing simple documents.
5: Its development is just too slow! Compare that with Google's Android. If OpenOffice
development was at just half the speed of Android, things would be different.
"...They asked me for the root password, which I flatly denied (as I always do), and then they rooted the server anyway, bringing it down and poking around through my logs.."
What does the word "rooted" mean in this case? They did not have the root password so what is the posted referring to here?
Now for the benefit of Joe Six Pack, someone should create a flowchart outlining all possible scenarios to the point of acquittal or guilt in cases like this. How about that?
Then they should also reject the arrangements currently in place for fire fighting, public education and Medicare/Medicaid etc. In our movement, we do not compel anyone to join. What we do, is to offer choice.
Those who see the benefit of our efforts can join; those who would like to stay away can do precisely that.
Let us interested Americans pool resources and start a nation wide non-profit cellphone company where we can all do as we please or where we can all utilize resources according to predetermined policies.
It would not be that hard.
Or, we could take over an existing company like Metro then do as we please. We surely can raise a few billion dollars, can't we?
I was going to buy Motorola's Droid but I think it is sensible to wait for this one. The good thing it will be unlocked.
That said, I fear for the price tag. This beast might be in the range of US$300-400. If Google can accept a payment plan, I would jump on its bandwagon. Otherwise forking out in excess of 1,000 dollars a year with a contract at 100 dollars a month with a carrier does not make much sense in my opinion.
You are just part of a bunch of folks who are apprehensive about whatever Microsoft does...even in good faith.
I do not want to come across as judgmental but I am sorry you just seem to be. Why do you always look at Microsoft will "all" the disdain? Why?
Microsoft is in the business of making money and licensing of its wares is just part of the game. What's wrong with that? Did you want Microsoft to go the Linux way and "donate" the software for "free?"
Question is: Where can I find them? I wonder how MythTV with trans-coding shows and all the rest would run on them. Any ideas on where to find old p- or z- series mainframes?
That's what happened to me. I eventually quit and went into health care; still do IT work on a volunteer basis. I now make good money but seeing misery all the time is beginning to have an effect on me.
Folks, you never know there is tons of suffering till you are working in a hospital. At that point you praise God for what you have.
I wonder why folks at Android (read Google) do not focus on web functionalities that matter in today's age.
Heck, we need Flash and PDF capabilities by default. Yes...by default. I know there are apps for these but "default" is the key word here. Now what's wrong with that?
Secondly how come Google's own Google Maps works better on the iPhone than Android phones? It should be the other way round...after all it's their product.
If the content they provide can ONLY be gotten from the Wall Street Journal, then Murdoch is onto something here. if not, then I am sorry they are in trouble.
Just answer me: What can I get from the WSJ that I cannot get from anywhere else?
Despite low usage numbers after more than a decade in existence Opera folks continue to spew out features. Good for them but I still won't touch their product.
The massive success of the iPhone has emboldened Apple. Otherwise how can you explain that behavior? Heck, there are thousands of apps for the iPhone so Apple think they are invincible.
Good we have some kind of competitor (read Droid) though Motorolla are curtailing the Droid's success by marketing only to the USA. And Google are not helping matters by creating avenues for incompatibilities around Android.
While I extensively use Google's products, I find that GMail is still wanting in terms of searching for email.
Here's why: You search for all mails containing some word...Gmail returns all mails having such a word with no obvious categorization. It would be better if it can return emails categorized as follows:
Those with attachments and what type of attachment it is, those sent last week, last month, last year, 2 years ago etc...those sent by who...and so on.
Right now, the interface sucks big time. Anyone agree? Yahoo does a better job at this.
"Google said consumers won't be able to download the operating system -- it will only be available on hardware that meets Google's specifications. Hard disks are banned, for instance, while Google said it will also specify factors such as screen sizes and display resolutions. Google said it plans to officially launch Chrome OS by the end of next year."
So I cannot even store my favorite pictures on the device because everything had to be stored in the "cloud?" What if I am to go upcountry?
I would like to see opinions of coders on Google's product. Any ideas?
Vote ALL city bureaucrats out at the earliest chance. I am willing to be part of this effort. Trust me, once they feel threatened with job losses in this economy, they will "style up."

"...This may not be a smooth transition, because some OSes do not align partitions on 4K boundaries..."
In cases like these, it always helps to provide examples. Care to do so? Thanks.

Disclaimer: I am no computer geek.

That's freedom, right?

It's hard to believe that the former Bush Administration edited 22 million emails.
That would mean at least 7,500 emails per day including weekends and holidays; and at least 5 emails per minute.
Now, just tell me who in Bush's administration was spewing such an amount of email.
I was going to buy Motorola's Droid but I think it is sensible to wait for this one. The good thing it will be unlocked.

Any hope for something similar when it comes to MS Office and Exchange?

Get a life...Have some faith.

Come on Google do something.
...the top five browsers -- IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Apple's Safari -- will appear in random order each time the ballot is displayed.
Guess what! Next, the complainants will not be happy with the way the randomization code is implemented. I guess they will propose an Open Source one.
Frankly, I cannot wait to get finished with this bickering, and besides, Firefox is not doing badly in Germany at all!
You may wonder why...
If the content they provide can ONLY be gotten from the Wall Street Journal, then Murdoch is onto something here. if not, then I am sorry they are in trouble.
Just answer me: What can I get from the WSJ that I cannot get from anywhere else?
...and here it is:
Some fella develops and distributes some serious virus that "shuts down" a big number of iPhones...
This generates [bad] publicity for the device...
The media pick the story up...(in the meantime, it's "damage control" for Apple)...
Android is touted as the best alternative...
Motorola and Co. jump on the bandwagon...
What next? profits, numbers and market share for the Droid.
Question is: Am I wrong?
Despite low usage numbers after more than a decade in existence Opera folks continue to spew out features. Good for them but I still won't touch their product.
Nuff said.
