    That new Intel chip isn't actually made by Intel, and because of it linux support is really bad right now.

    I have an EEE 1000. Mine must be on the first.

    So, I guess that means it's entirely arbitrary.

    Note that 16m is the smallest chunk I can partition on my SSD - exactly one block - I only "need" an 8m partition however.

    My eeePC has something called Boot Booster. I leave a 16mb EFI partition (type code 'ef') as the first partition on my first drive, and the BIOS somehow uses that to skip POST and jump right into the boot loader.

    Your boards MIGHT have something like that, see if adding such a partition (remember has to be partition 1...) does any good.

    That said, this makes getting into the BIOS or boot menu a PITA button mashing fest to try and squeeze the keypress in at just the right moment.

    Well, testing 4.1 in OpenSUSE... the bar is the same (or smaller) than KDE3.5 was, and the desktop is easy to restore to a "normal" desktop instead of a widget dock.

    Try it out and play around. It won't bite.

    I do care! I care because I want to look for a solution, not throw my hands up in despair like some other users do.

    How else do you think things get fixed? People like me notice and write it up. It gets fixed.

    How long have you been running 4.2? Have you submitted any bug reports or contributed in testing? No? Then you have no right to bitch about it.

    I didn't say how it would come along. Someone will end up doing it and we will survive, or nobody will and there won't be anyone around to care.

    Survival is too deeply rooted in our brains. Out of the millions of us, someone with the ability to solve it will eventually do so.

    I'm not in a position to solve it. I won't be for a very long time, if ever. Bitching about it (here, at least) doesn't help.

    There's always the option of not reproducing... there are plenty of ways to be intimate that don't end up with semen deposition.

    Robots.txt is the equivalent of a burn-order in your Last Will and Testament. If the author chooses to have their work left outside of the archive(s), it's entirely the author's fault if it dissapears.

    If IE mattered for the demographic that will be using this service, then supporting it would be a priority. However it's not, so it's not a priority.

    boot really fast by using ram disk. ... which was conveniently erased when you rebooted. Sounds useful.

    What use is it to boot from a ramdisk like that? The CPU cannot execute zeroes.

    Except that the data still has to go through the southbridge, that will be your new bottleneck. RAM is through the northbridge, which is loads faster... but is also directly tied with the CPU(s).

    This isn't RAM in the classical sense. It's a storage device that uses RAM instead of a magnetic platter.

    As long as your motherboard supports SATA, then it supports this.

    For games, there are dedicated devices that are cheaper and better.

    Says the one that hasn't seen a new game on new hardware connected to a very large TV screen... I'm not arguing about cheaper, but don't try to tell me a console is better.
