That was a good CD, but nearly all the tracks had some kind of highpass filter. When I dig it out every now and then, my first instinct is that my car stereo finally broke (no bass at all).

If he still has the mixer tracks / whatever from that album, Trent should really consider re-releasing it with all the original audio still in. I can filter it myself to my own liking, at that point.

    http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4061815/Nine_Inch_Nails_-_Ghosts_I-IV_%5B2008_FLAC_Lossless%5D

    Currently 340+ seeders to 3 leaches. Yes. That's 340:3.

The other formats are essentially pointless - grab the flac and encode to your favorite format - that is more like ripping from a CD, then transcoding from an MP3.

  10. Re:Confusion between permissions and encryption. on 7 Secure USB Drives Reviewed · · Score: 2, Informative

Microsoft's encryption uses some weird public key stuff that is tied to the user hash (i call it a hash - mean that big numbery-string thing that shows when the user isn't in the local systems SAM database)

Basically, the whole point of it is that you can't take some random encrypted drive somewhere else and read it - kind of defeats the purpose of using it on a flash drive, unless you want it (or the specific paths that are encrypted) locked to the PC.

Yes, the NTFS encryption is crap, unless you set up windows JUST RIGHT and then encrypt it, or use the 'crypt' command line utility (built in) to update it all.

  11. Re:Need more to follow suit. on Reznor Follows Radiohead, Offers Free Album · · Score: 1

Not familiar with ALC... is it lossless? You may want to get FLAC, transcode to ALC (and keep the FLAC for further/later use). This means that, 5 years down the line, you don't have a recording that sounds like mush (think of making tape duplicates from the children as time goes on, rather than making a duplicate from the original CD)

  12. Re:FLAC on Reznor Follows Radiohead, Offers Free Album · · Score: 1

Well, stick to what you want. In my case, I haven't used wavepack and haven't seen anything earth shattering enough to want to change. Incidentally, FLAC was the first lossless format I have used/tried.

I was wondering about openness, as in the case of my sansa (which only supports mp3 and wma) now plays over 25 formats, due to an open-source firmware package. FLAC is one of them.

Yet more additions. Damn I need to consolidate my posts...

The reason I advocate downloading FLAC, even if you don't USE it as flac, is you can encode to whatever format, whenever, at whatever settings you want. You may have a better encoder, you might have better ears and want a higher bitrate than the other downloads. Really, the only drawback to downloading the FLAC version - it's 2-4 times the size of the other downloads. Gigs are cheap nowadays, so I don't see an issue with that.

  14. Re:Need more to follow suit. on Reznor Follows Radiohead, Offers Free Album · · Score: 1

Oh, one addition. Not sure if this is sansa-specific (don't think it is) but I can hold down a certain key while powering on my player, and it boots the original firmware - which, incidentally, doesn't even see my rockbox installation and ignores any media formats it can't read.

  15. Re:Need more to follow suit. on Reznor Follows Radiohead, Offers Free Album · · Score: 1

Well, you can decode the flac (using any old flac decoder, but the official one works fine) to a .wav file, which you can then convert to whatever you want.

    See here: http://flac.sourceforge.net/

Also, if you are OK with putting third-party firmware on your I-Pod, check out http://www.rockbox.org/ - support for over 20 codecs, and is quite nice. I have it on my sansa E200. Flac is supported VERY well.

(rockbox is not for the feint of heart, but it is POWERFUL. You can play doom on your ipod. You can configure crossfeeding, preamp, etc. see http://tinyurl.com/lfsqx

  16. Re:Format a Flash drive as NTFS on 7 Secure USB Drives Reviewed · · Score: 1

ntfs on removable media doesn't work well. Even the "everyone" permission will show as a hash on a third-party PC, so essentially all permissions information will be unusable (but not lost - it still works on the host PC). As such, the encryption will not work on any other PC but host.

On the sidekick, for an end-user to install an app, it has to be in the catalog. The catalog is locked down by the carrier and danger (the phone OS people).

If you get a dev key, YOU can do what you want with YOUR phone, but others still cannot use your apps unless they have dev keys as well, or the app is in the catalog.

Catalog apps usually cost money to download, but I noticed a few (2 in like 50) are free.
