UE3 uses some kind of deferred loading. Notice when you first enter the menu and whatnot that everything looks like garbage for a moment - the hitching you see at the start is because of texture uploads to your VRAM and the like.
There's a difference between skin contact with a good thermal conductor at "normal" temperatures, and sandals against something even hotter than the already ridiculously hot air.
