Though again I forgot to add (pressed post to quickly) I can also make a parallel with science fairs and such with working for NASA or being an astronaut. You might never make it to the big league, but you will work something out with what you have. Aka research for a University or something of the sort. Well same thing for sports. We might never make it to the big leagues (I know I won't) but I still play every summer and winter. And it keeps me going. Having something in school that I love is a motivational factor for me to go (though I did do quite well, and yes I did also participate in engineering contests). Of course it will not please the whole population of the school, but neither are science fairs.

Like other people noted, everyone has different needs and we need to accomodate the most possible by offering a varity of services. One of them being sports.

I would like to point out a couple of things but I don't think it's my place for as I don't have first hand experience in your situation and I think that would be prejudice on my part (I guess it was a bit in my other posts then) but in general, regardless of the country, I do stand by what I say due to personal experience that sports in high school was a good thing.

Actually I would like to also add that you wrote that they should just run a mile or something at the end of the day. Well that's a practical solution while not necessarily a logical one. I don't know if you ever noticed how boring running is. For most people this is just a burden. Sports is a more fun and interactive way to getting kids in shape.

If I may make a parallel, your running miles is like telling a kid to just read this book on history and then write the exam without actually teaching him anything. You assume the kid is just going to read it and remember everything. The point to school is to get teachers to present to you in a way that you will understand the material. Which is the whole challenge.

GET RID of Sports. There is too much time wasted on something where less than 1% of the kids actually become professional athletes.

HELL NO!!! Are you insane!?!? School sports is a way to unite the student body. It promotes (this may sound corny) school spirit where you have a sense of belonging and pride. This is crucial to any school to mark its place! Please, keep sports in. It also gives motivation for some people to actually go to school.

It's not about being a superstar, it's about getting a taste of something and being able to try something. It's about learning what you like or not like, it's also a process of discovering one's self. Hey maybe you aren't cut out for sports. Maybe you are, it gives you an idea. But it's an important part of a person's life to be active, and if school can promote it, then good for them. God knows Americans have an obesity problem.

It is hard to improve education as a whole. You will always piss some people off. The most you can do, is become a teacher and take your job at heart. A really good teacher makes a difference in a person's life. I am from Canada therefore I do not know what is in your content for education, but I do know for a fact that whatever you are teaching, the way you present the content to the kids is the most important part of the process.

You can teach anyone anything if you just find the right way to relate to them. By having teachers that understand this and to their best to present in a fun and challenging way, will bring out the most in the students.

Now how you are going to breed a set of teachers like this? I have no clue.

In your original argument you say :

You want to take risks? Accept the consequences. That's all crime is. If you're gonna bitch and moan that the penalties are too harsh, then don't do it. And if you're not doing it, then you've got nothing to worry about.

What I was arguing was that if it doesn't matter what the consequences are for the crime because we just shouldn't do it, then let's just cut the crap and say that all crimes should have the death penalty. I mean, what's to worry about? Just don't do it. You see? That's what I was trying to get at. It's ridiculous (like you said).

As for your sasser argument, I made a comment on that in another post.

There is also the flip side: is it worth killing 1 innocent person to prevent the death of 10 innocent persons (for this I mean by having a system that has the death penalty you execute an innocent as well as some guilty who would have killed 10 if they were not executed)? You must be very careful when using reductio ad absurdum.

There is also the argument of the scientist where if he had the choice to kill one innoncent person to find a cure for cancer, would he do it? The answer is most likely no. And personally no I do not agree in killing an innoncent life to save others, because if we do take it case by case, it is obvious that if you killed the innoncent guy, than the real guy is out there and your death count is at 11 (innoncent dead convicted guy + your 10 victims that have been killed by the original killer.) And besides that, if the guy is locked away for life, there isn't a chance that he goes out and kills again.

I do agree though, with a punishment that fits the crime but you have to be careful. We have to take into account alot of different factor, for one, the age of the criminal, in the sasser case, 17. Now do you really think that it's fair for him to serve a lifetime sentence? And here is where the kicker is, who gets to decide what is fair? Well for that you've got the jury to thank. But like everyone else, juries are made of people, people aren't perfect, they make mistakes. But I would rather see a mistake that doesn't involve the fate of someone's life.

  11. Re:They're felons, they have no rights. on Death Penalty For Hackers? · · Score: 4, Insightful
The problem with your argument is you are saying that we shouldn't whine about any crime's consequence because we just shouldn't do it. Well this goes on a broader range, let's say I take your argument to another degree and say that all crimes should be punished with the death penalty. Do you see the flaw in your argument now?

But one of the best arguments I have against all death penalty (including murder) would be in the case of the conviction of an innoncent person. This speaks for itself. To avoid killing one innoncent person is worth not having the death penaltly at all.

On the other hand, if the guy is in the plane talking it up with others or setting off a bomb from his laptop, isn't it already too late to catch him once he's in the plane? I mean how are they going to stop him?

The only thing I can see from this is getting a source to the bombing (if it occurs). And if they wanted to, all they would need is a connection and someone remotely could detonate it.

So again, how is this going to help when they are already in the sky?

Thanks, but to put things in perspective up here in Canada, I am not worried one bit about our current terrorist situation. I mean honestly, who the hell is going to attack us?

Yes we may have more soft immigration laws, but goddamit last time I checked I had more freedom than the average American. I don't have to run around in fear that everytime I bump into someone they are holding a gun waiting to blast my head off or that the next guy beside me with an unusually large backpack may have explosives in them ready to blow the crap out of anyone.

The laws for immigration allow many different people from all over the world to be allowed to live in this country. Given this respect we give to others, we receive the same kind when we go "visit" their countries. Which I think speaks pretty much for itself. One word : Cuba. Best damn vacation ever.

So when I look over at the tragedy that happened in London, I feel bad for the UK. But as many argued, them being targetted might have something to do with the close ties they share with the US. And so I can only hope that they don't start passing ridiculous laws over in the UK as they have in the US scaring the shit out of everyone that lives there, which ultimately makes the terrorists win.

PS. sorry if this doesn't follow coherently, my train of thought is everywhere.
