    I've run xfs for years on my media storage partitions and I've never had a problem. Crashs. power failure etc ... nothing. It is a journaling filesystem and works so well I'm thinking of running my whole system next install.

    Be nice to see a comment display page as a lot happens there. I don't mind it at all, which is less than ringing endorsement but still a positive ;).

      I would add a:

      text-indent: 4px;

      to the Paragraph section as that little indent does tidy things up visually.

    Hmmmm my Opty 165 which is perfectly happy at 2.6 gig costs 'bout $330 US. The Core Duo T2600 is $700. I am quite happy with my choice and I look forward to a good fight between Intel and AMD ;).

    That is just nuts.If you can't push any kind of update to your network you need to learn a bunch of stuff.

      Kernels released by vendors are just that. I roll my stuff every time we get 2 .s so I run 2.6.16 now. The changes are fairly clearly laid out in the changelogs and if you are worried you can wait a few days to see what breaks. If you have similar machines, sounds like you do, all Nvidia, you can roll a new kernel in a half hour on your old config and then when happy push it out to the network. The Marvel drivers have been hacked and will be ready soon BTW.

      Oh hell learn a little *nix eh'.

    Cool be dependent then. If you don't want to learn that's just fine by me.

      Some people don't like having to depend on some organization to fix their problems but I guess that's just liberal-commie thinking, you know the strong independant ... oh hold it, that can't be right ;).

      I guess my ability to get almost any damn thing to run by fooling with kernel and drivers is just wasted effort. Hi ho ....

    Is not as hard as some make out. It's worth spending a few hours learning how to build your own kernel, it will reward you.

      Then we would not have put up with pitiful crap like this quite so often.

    It is well known but not admitted that the TCP-IP stack in windose was taken pretty well whole from FreeBSD. Now the FreeBSD kernel has been forked and locked away.

      "Stealing" may be a bit dramatic but it does convey the sense of what is happening. What word would you use?

    Actually free software does not care. Watching Apple shoot it's self in the foot is quite entertaining. You think we have some longing for an Apple OS, nooooo ;). The BSD stuff is also free to steal and both Bill and Steve are very grateful for that.

    What you got is FreeBSD 5.x running monolithic and the old microkernel, well kinda, Mach doing interpretation for the Mac crap. This is wildly simplistic but does convey the sense of what OSX does.

    Hmmm kind of interesting actually. A Blu-Ray should be physicaly able to read a HD-DVD, it does read everything else. I don't see why a firmware upgrade would be so hard to create.

      If you can track the bits on the disc it's just a matter of arranging and streaming them to a format your player understands.

      Any hardware guys got a take on this?

    This is really not a game console. It is a media device that plays games. I plan to get the expensive one and network the puppy with my computer. That will give me HDMI out, a Blu-Ray drive and WiFi none of which I have now. It is a pretty good deal if you look at it that way.
