  1. Same Story here in Canada on File Sharing Remains a Perk of College Life · · Score: 2, Informative

I go to a university in Canada with about 25000 students. The exact same thing happens here, people who run resnet know DC++ exists and they look the other way. They actually moderately appreciate it because it means that fewer people are grabbing files from outside the network which a) means the RIAA is going to send them fewer legal threats and b) the university uses less bandwidth, since everything within resnet costs them nothing.

Students will ALWAYS find ways to download files.

  2. Factors to consider at UW on Students Failing Because of Poor Grammar · · Score: 1

There are a number of factors to consider when using UW as an example. UW's best and largest programs are computer science and engineering, not arts. These tend to attract students that didn't do particularly well in high school English classes. Furthermore, the school has a large number of foreign students who seem to find learning English impossible. While only 6.9% of students are studying on a student Visa, there appear to be a larger group of people who are recent immigrants and finished some of high school in Canada without actually learning English properly.

Setting aside issues specific to UW, part of this is to blame on poor high schools, but plenty of them do teach grammar. My high school certainly did.

The University of Waterloo should also stop accepting students who get below 75% in English. Prospective students tend to get poor marks in English while letting math and science marks raise their average.

  8. iproute2 is what you'll be using for routing on Working With 2 ISPs For Home Networking? · · Score: 1

I recently set up a similar setup, but instead of load balancing across the two connections for everything, I needed to construct rules that decided if certain types of traffic (irc, http, etc.) went across which connections. If you choose to use any type of linux-based router, iproute2 will probably be what you'll be using, even if it is abstracted by some type of graphical tool. Consider the following links explaining iproute2:

    The Linux Foundation's iproute2 page:
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Net:Iproute2

These guys seem to be maintaining iproute2 now.

The "Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO": http://lartc.org/howto/

This is probably the most thorough document on iproute2 and will cover absolutely everything you would need to know about it.

    Specifically, look into load balancing:
    http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.loadshare.html

This excellent page also explains how to make iproute2 and iptables interact with each other, so you can use iptables rules to mark packets for iproute2 to route over a certain interface:
    http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.netfilter.html

Finally, this document provides some basic information about how to manipulate rules with iproute2, which is useful if you're trying to diagnose why it's not working correctly:

That's complete bullshit. I regularly copy gigs upon gigs of data on and off my 80 gig ipod and I've /never/ had it corrupt anything. Ever. And yes, whether or not you want to run OS X should be the deciding factor with this laptop vs an MBP; I've run it but it's a hacked up mess and I don't really run it seriously (installing it was more just for fun).

My friend owns a Core 1 MBP which was overheating. He had to send it back and was without it for about a month and a half. He also had an Asus motherboard which had an issue with the southbridge and needed to be fixed/replaced. Asus sent him another one in about a week. That's pretty important for alot of people I know.

The sizes posted are a bit misleading, due to a quirk in the way the F3Sv is designed. It is thin in the front and then gets gradually thicker as you go to the back. The size they used is where the laptop is at its thickest. I measured at the front, and it's 0.9 inches thick.

And I'd like to reiterate that for alot of people that having a laptop that "just works" like the MBP is worth the value for some people, and I can understand that. But for the average slashdot user, I think the F3Sv is the better deal in this case.

Check on gigabit, bluetooth (with EDR, no less), a camera, microphone, dvi/vga/s-video/component/composite out, 802.11n and an expresscard slot. As for a remote, my Nintendo Wii remote works perfectly with it (in both linux and windows).

Oh, and linux runs perfectly on it. And so does OSX86. It's not worth paying an extra $400-500 for the MBP, if you ask me. That being said, you're completely right about a Mac being priced within the grasp of most people and "just working".

I cannot stress enough that the same thing is not always true for everyone. Some people would never do a good job on their homework if they sat around watching TV or playing games all the time, for others it works fine. Also, moderation is key. You need to know when to say "enough playing games, time to get homework done". Of course, for some people, it's best to do homework first, but I never do that! ;)

Also, some people have suggested time spent playing video games could instead be spent studying. In practise, everyone seems to do the bare minimum and never studies if it's not required.
