As bad as religion in school is, I have to agree with you. I would place far more of the blame on football. Really sports in general, but football seems to be the biggest culprit. The vast majority of high schools would rather hire a good coach and have them do a crappy job at teaching than hire a good teacher and have them do a crappy job of coaching. Heck, every school high school in my county, while complaining that they cannot afford text books or other supplies, seem to have found enough money to install huge fields of astroturf and stadium lighting. One even has waterslides! Yes, waterslides.
I would say they should do exactly the opposite with truancy laws. Truancy laws create criminals. They do not improve education. The first thing that needs to be done is to openly admit that people really only need about a (proper) 6th grade education to function just fine in society. Most people are doing it right now. Many of them are doing quite well. They just spent 13+ years getting that 6th grade education. From there we can assess what are the importing pieces of education, and what are not.
Most people spend upwards of 12,000 hours in school (not counting homework time). You might think that they could be taught a little bit of science in that time.
That is a HUGE part of the problem with people being dumb. It has become acceptable in our society to call wrong answers 'opinion', and of course 'opinions' are not right or wrong.
Most people do not seem to understand that you can make a statement of fact that is wrong. They believe that a statement of fact by definition is only the right answers.
Even fewer realize that if I say 'My favorite color is magenta.', that I have just made a statement of fact. It is a statement of fact about my opinion. In this case it is a false statement of fact, as magenta is in fact, not my favorite color.
Until "wall to wall carpeting", rugs could be taken outside and beat. Wall to wall carpeting never gets that. Of course, as you point out, there has also been a change in what our little biological vacuum cleaners are sucking out of the rugs.
Can I add Wall-to-Wall carpets. The massive increases in asthma seem to be correlated more with the move from hard floors to carpeted floors. Floors that are literally impossible to get clean. The floors that people put their babies face down on. That babies suck up stuff from literally like a vacuum cleaner.
Of course the fact that it says "TV" is correlated with asthma when they mean "being seditary" shows a massive bias. We see these reports of how TV causes health problems because it makes you seditary, but not once have I heard about books causing health problems.
That may be the definition that Wikipedia uses. That may be the definition that you use. That IS the definition that I believe should be used. It is not the definition that the various government and do gooder organizations use. Frequently quoted government organizations like the CDC disagree with you, me and Wikipedia.
Deflation isn't 'bad' because it screws the consumer and holder of debt. Inflation is often used as an attempt to steal money out of the economy. Over extended debt is much of our current problem. Our current economy is based on the idea that inflation will pay off your debts and thus borrowing money is earning money. That isn't a sustainable model.
Because they planned to turn the 100 widgets into 150 yuan so after the.03 point deflation, they are still making.47 yuan per unit, and to replace the raw materials will now only cost 0.97 yuan because of the deflation.
The reason the previous poster called you a 'brainwashed sheep' is because you clearly believe that deflation and taking a loss on every every unit sold are synonymous. This is simply false. The 'same fundamental observations of economics' always seem to not notice the benefits of deflation like lower raw material costs for equal quality materials as well lower wages for an equal quality of life for their employees. In fact, if the factory continues to pay their employees the same amount, it will have the real effect of having given their employees a raise.
Every time that deflation comes up, someone does what you did. They make up a very specifically crafted scenario that would be bad in a deflation economy, and then call it a 'fundamental observation of economics. They completely ignore the fact that inflation is exactly what has cause our current financial problems. An inflation economy encourage people not to save a safety net because in an inflation economy, every dollar you save is money lost.
Since there is not stable economy (as in no inflation or deflation) every economy is either in a state of inflation or deflation, and dealing with the problems caused by the change. Inflation economies hurt the individual while deflation economies hurt the business. If a billion dollars is lost, it sounds worse if it is from a business (a single entity) than if it is from 100 million individuals. It isn't worse. It just sounds that way because it makes a better sound bite.
The reason people think that home schooled kids are nerds, geeks, or socially inept is because by the time they are 12 or 13, they behave and expect other to behave like adults. Put them in a room full of 30 other 13 year olds who still have the mentality of an 8 year old but with full adult libidos, and the well adjust home school kid seems out of place. It's the sane man in an insane world syndrome. Take any well adjusted adult, and put them in the body of a 13 year old, and they will seem out of place in a public school.
What I want from the GPU is features like what the CPUs have so that the GPU can have multiple VMs running in it. The only reason that I don't run inside of a VM as my primary computing environment is because graphics acceleration pretty much suck in it. When AMD bought ATI I expected virtualized video to be one of their early announcement.
Imagine if your VMed OS could believe that it had 100% control of the video card, but your video card would display on it's own 'surface', and still use full hardware acceleration for the process. As far as I can tell, video is the only serious stumbling block left in virtualizing the x86 architecture.
Well, if you do get a wife, let me know, because if you consider finding her sleeping around to be a small and silly example, I am definitely going to want to 'meet' her.;)
"synergy" really? That word is unlikely to convince anyone here. I would say that Apple in no way have built a hardware and software that are integrated together to work seamlessly and intuitively. The fact that iPhones are notorious for crashes and lockups shows that beyond a shadow of a doubt that they do not work together seamlessly, and the fact that you cannot or at least until recently could not download podcasts directly to your phone without first downloading it to a computer shows that it is clearly not intuitive. I have talked to several people who were definitely confused about why web sites didn't work with their phone. Particularly when they would get a button that says download Flash. When they would click on it, they would get a message saying that the phone couldn't do it. This is definitely not intuitive.
The iPhone is not a success because it is a great product. It is a success because Apple has great marketing, a fanatical generally well to do fanboy base, it is an upgrade to an existing popular product, it looks good, and it is a reasonably good product in it's own right, even if it has some major and obvious flaws.
Not really. I know that I personally haven't been to a single city that doesn't have tunnels of some kind. They might not be big enough for a man to climb through, but in my city alone we have the gas lines, sewer lines, and storm drains. A system the size of the sewer lines could handle dozens of competing lines. A system the size the storm drains could easily handle hundreds.
Cities all over the country are well versed in how to run conduit to homes.
Communications are not a natural monopoly. The fact that the governments have banned competition does NOT mean that it is a natural monopoly. In fact it means exactly the opposite. Saying that we should have only 1 cable to our house because it is cheaper to build makes no more sense than saying we should have the government only allow one grocery store in town because it is cheaper to build. And if they did, it wouldn't make grocery stores a natural monopoly anymore than communications are.
Wow, the parent post validates your comments 100%. I don't think he realized it.
I can honestly say that I actually moved over 100 miles so that my child would have a doctor that behaves as you describe. I have yet to find a doctor for myself and wife that I can feel is being 100% honest with me. I wish I could find a doctor for myself that behaves like my son's pediatrician. Give me 'what the studies show', give me what his personal experience has been, then ask me what I want to do, and accept my answer, even if it conflicts with both the 'studies' and his own opinion. Once I can trust the doctor, I am far more likely to take his advice.
More common than you think. I've done it myself, and have at least one other pal that has done his own. Of course calling it surgery makes it sound a lot worse than it is. It's a little like the guy that claims to have built his computer because he bought a motherboard, case, memory and hard drive separately and assembled them at home. Sure, calling it building a computer is kind of accurate, but when compared to the guys that REALLY build computers, is just doesn't impress.
Seriously, PCs are a security risk, and before you were around to complain about the applications on that PC, there were admins complaining that PCs were allowed in the facility at all.
Or what happens to the salamanders that would have filled their niche when they were gone? Sometimes it is hard to believe how many "environmentalists" are not.

That is a perfect example. EVERY time I type 'calendar', I have to make a effort to make sure that I spell it correctly.
Until "wall to wall carpeting", rugs could be taken outside and beat. Wall to wall carpeting never gets that. Of course, as you point out, there has also been a change in what our little biological vacuum cleaners are sucking out of the rugs.
"An American police officer is a very risky job and comes with shitty hours, high divorce rate, and a paycheck that doesn't match."
The same could be said of the guy working at the QuikyMart. Do you treat them with the same 'respect' that you do the police?
I expect that is exactly how they will describe it when they file a patent for it. That way it's INNOVATION!

I would like to point out that 19 year old adult women married women who get pregnant are counted as bing a teen pregnancy in our society.

That's what I've been thinking. They can use Fat 12/16 to store the file system install if they want, so they don't even need to distribute a disk.
