there is a world of difference on the same os, patch levels, and same hardware with Solaris.
64 bit Solaris has been tweaked beyond belief because it was pushed to the forefront. 32 bit Solaris has been sort of a red headed stepchild that has only been maintained not really tweaked as much as the 64 bit version has. And while they do share the same code base , the code has been optimized for 64 bit
You also fail to realize a couple things , what is the number of people who have given up looking for jobs after thier unemployment has run out ?
Personally that is me , I gave up looking for work since every one wants to take advantage of the folks that are looking for work.
Tightening my belt and my wife working a little over time when she can and we are getting along while I am trying to get some training for other then IT.
Yes , but if you read more of the article for that NSA wiretap you would see they were accused of having even more rooms just like it on the at&t backbone.
As a contractor I can agree , when I left Sun I left on a lay off after lasting so many rounds I seen my friends go.
Now I am just looking for the biggest pay day knowing I have to cover my own insurance in a mandatory insurance state @ 720 a month for health. I am charging what I can to get as much as I can so I can enjoy a month or so off around Christmas to go out of country to actually enjoy life , instead of being a slave to it.
I hope not, I have to follow security sites that the bad guys put up to help secure my servers. I guess I'd be in jail for doing my job and trying to stay abreast of the world wide hacker web.
Yeah , that works some what , unless you live in Massachusetts where health insurance is mandatory , and the plans you use don't count toward the tax mans bill.
Microsystems are becoming the end game at the moment , or are being touted as such.
The newest platforms are actually systems on a chip. Not only a watch dog watching the voltage and clock lines , but watch dogs performing zero knowledge tests on blocks of data before they are passed to the considered safe block of ram. It always comes to the same point , the key is on the chip some where. You can randomize and do as much as you want to make the key random , at some point the key has to be stored to even start the boot process.
Some of the newer micros are using a main core like the eco2000 in the case of seimen/infineon 8051 systems and having a watchdog watch the lines , a block decoder/encoder sitting in between passing it to and from the core ram and storing the keys in a small block that is read only under certain conditions met by the block de/enc device, bit settings in protected ram and the state of the eco core. The main issue is the key is still on board. When this happens once you have that you have control.
There really is no way to prevent the system from being hacked when you have to give the secret with the device. The only combat you have is to make it to expensive to hack and therefore take away the reason to do so.
Security by using security mess and UV detectors on the newer security chips are stop gap measures, an interested person will find a way around it. There is no way to secure anything , what is secure now , won't be secure tommorow , and when people have interests you won't lock them out. The only hope again is to stave off the hack long enough to develop another system to take its place when some one figures out the current system. Cat and mouse till the day we die.
With current storage prices , why would you need to hunt down programs to install ? External drives and keeping your programs and keys together are nice.
I use windows , linux , and Solaris. I hate having to download so many security fixes every week for linux, some of us don't have big pipes constantly. At least with windows after I have locked down and updated I don't have to keep updating at 40 or 50 megs a week.
BTW the software thing is a moot point for web and ftp. IIS covers that for windows and comes on the disc.
Linux was developed by technical people for technical people. Until we can develop for non technical people we won't gain any ground. And his complaints are not so 90's , besides for ubuntu forums I still see forums saying to search google and then if they can't find an answer come back and RTFM.
Oh yeah and Vista is the same as any other version of windows , the only thing is names and locations have changed a little and I do mean very little.
Major questions , with the track record as of late from China would you trust a major piece of a nuclear puzzle to them ? I mean it really. And with Korea , I don't know if I would trust them as well.
The Japanese firms for steel have a really good reputation for forging some of the best parts in the world. Even the Spaniards and Americans can not produce such quality steel.
I don't think I would want to be near a Chinese forged reactor core any time in my life. QC does not seem to be their strong point.
No way Sony wouldn't do that ! You must not talk ill of the mighty Sony.
I am depressed . I got a PS3 and now it just sits there. I mean even the over priced bluray movies , we don't watch in it. After beating R&C and The simpsons , the system just sits collecting dust. I thought about installing linux but , really that is of no value to me. I love my quad core, and the system makes my hd videos from my pc look like crap.
I wish it was not given to me as a gift , then I could have gotten the free 5 movies and maybe returned this thing. Bahh mind as well unplug the sucker , all it does is waste energy.
Actually buying SAP would probably accelerate this.
I would like to see Ms buy SAP. Integrate some decent management tools into the management console.
I mean I hate SAP monitoring the batches is horrible in the ugly java looking window. And if MS could put some money into SAP and creating an alternative to Tivoli and I would be one happy sys admin. I hate Basis admin , it becomes a tedious task and is much harder then it really has to be. I think MS would be able to dumb it down a bit and make it easier for folks like me who have to look after multiple platforms.
I don't think the googleplex shares cycles quite like this.
I remember reading the infiniband switch main inventor's bio while working at Sun , interesting guy who had these types of things on his mind all the time.
Big companies are quick to penetrate ! I constantly get raped by comcast ! and it is neither slow nor painless.
The poor slackers like me who have been forced to take contract jobs since we are labeled as contractors once you do a couple in a row.

So your the guy who I always hear typing up a storm here. Guys stand up and look toward the end of the row , I work here too....
Wait no one stood up. There must be a shit load of places like this.
Now being fat can be a new industry in the US !!!
At least we can say we are leading at something !
Isn't that why they sell sports cars and suvs and tractor trailers from different parts of the lot ?

At the moment Im seeding pretty heavily as well , well over 800 kB a sec going out. Ubuntu fans are bringing my 10 mbit link to its knees.
:)
But I love using it for this. Helps me keep Verizon on their toes
Solid proof one geek can make a difference ! :)
HSA is not considered insurance here. Taxachusetts is in it to get as much as they can.
We actually have to have insurance for more then just emergency , it's a complete crock.

Yes there is ! it comes from BC :)
This is Slashdot ! Facts we don't need no stinkin facts.

Bahh Crysis is old school.
Finally TUX RACER in FULL 3D GLORY !
That is an ethical response and I think it's a good idea. Maybe that will be the end result of this lawsuit.
