That is fine in dense urban areas , or places that don't get much snow , but it don't work in the heartland of the us or the northeast , even the south some times gets flooded and the need for bigger vehicles that can go through water is needed. The average suburban person doesn't need an urban assault vehicle painted to match thier bag , like is what is common these days , thanks to the hollywood pin heads who make it popular.
Well here I will help you , you see here in the Northeast , we get hit by storms a lot and it has become so expensive to live we need to work every day just to break even. So we buy these monsters to get to work every day !
Now me I used to drive a big honking Dodge Ram with 4x4 so I never got stuck , but 18 miles on the highway when it hit almost $4 a gallon was crazy. traded it for a car then realized once Snow hit , I need a suv with 4x4 , i am considered a crucial staff member and if I get snowed in I have to stay , and if it's snowing I have to be there. So I bought a Honda AWD Cr-V and now laugh at the folks in the bigger SUV's when they pay $60 to get 3/4 of a tank. I feel bad but i remember paying $160 every day for fuel for work. And i don't ever want to go back to that.
In this case I think there absolutely has to be coders on the spot. While working with Sun I found out that these boxes using even 1% more process time then it needs too can cause millions in losses from trades over a week. That really is something I don't think linux is ready for. I hope it succeeds as I really like red hat on Sun gear , and feel it does have quite a good reputation. Good luck up there on the NYSE guys.

Don't use facts ! It seems that a lot of folks here don't actually know the costs associated with support licenses, but speak like they do.
Most of the good IT folks in big shops know that Sun contracts are less then redhat , but the real question is what is hp using for a distro ? Is It centos ? Or redhat ? Suse maybe ? And how are they cutting the cost of support ? To be honest I don't think a support rep from india and a couple on location engineers are going to cut the mustard here.
If the past is any precedent for the future (history doomed to repeat itself ?) our use and burn type of living will stop soon , and the infrastructure that is now fiber (60's and 70's technology) was replaced to get higher speeds will come full circle , they will upgrade the pon pos soon after higher speed ones are out , at this point short of a physics breakthrough we are going to be with fiber for awhile.
Fios users are seeing 20/20 speeds now , you might not have noticed it in the past couple weeks but they are becoming a symmetrical provider.
Fios is looking at the future , and gig connections may well become the norm once places like youtube start serving hd content. Verizon has this nailed , they are planning on rolling out a service that will need minimal upgrades for the next 50 years , Comcast isn't.
I have comcast and they are plagued by they just dont care and take customers for granted , i have 0 options besides them because of trees and distance from the co. once Fios is here im gone.
about reverse engineering , you will find it is indeed legal to reverse anything in the USA as long as its done for education and is not to be done for profit as well as to make a profit.
2 words , digital distrobution. Cut the costs of doing business and make it easier to own the product and buy it then to download it illegally.
for a song download cd for $5 and get a hard copy sent for $10 total. With album art ! software lets say a game , seed a torrent sell the cd key via email for $10 or $20 ! no cd needed in the drive. movies $8 download $12 physical disc and $15 for Hd version your choice. how about movies sent to a tivo or music to a tivo ? There are so many solutions but no one wants to use them because they would make less per sale.
It scales well. Business on the web are about bringing down costs. If you want the cd fine go to the store and get it for same cost as it would be to get it delivered.
They shouldn't be price fixing and they should learn to evolve with technology.
Why would any law maker help people ? It's not their job any more. They are bought and sold by these people daily.
Short of the public getting up and saying enough is enough, I don't think we will see any lawmaker get up and notice this. If they do they will probably be given a hefty donation to their "re-election" campaign and the spouse of the lawmaker hired for a job pouring milk in the head quarters for $250 k a month.
It's already happening. My neighbors are a couple lawyers. Albeit they are criminal and Divorce , they are saying that most people in their firm are getting crap from judges for bringing stupid patent cases to court.
Thankfully their firm is downtown boston so tons of stupid companies go to them daily. These patent trolls are losing money quickly and it's great to see the RIAA is running into the same issue.
They need to update thier business model or face becoming extinct.
It's retail they don't spend before it happens , they try and save a buck when they can.
My experience at a retail business was exactly that. We had to have weeks of slow networks and servers in order to get the ok to get vendors in to bid on selling us gear. It was a huge joke.
They should host with companies like akimai who can provide bandwidth on demand.
Also I would say Vista is as fast as XP is now , it just has extra demand needed by the services that are running that never were run on XP.
Vista could be a great OS , we just won't know until they decide to get the drm out of the system and remove what people feel is slowing down everything.
I would like to see a total rewrite of the windows kernel to take advantage of newer ways of doing things. And I mean completely throw out backward compatability much like Linux does when they change core components in the system. Relying on a kernel that is going on almost what 20 years old ? Tells me this company has way to much mucking up the highway.
I think personally they should study the unix and linux kernels and understand what makes them the workhorse kernels. I have linux boxes and 3 solaris boxes that have been up since 2002. But not a Windows server over 1 year. And those 1 years are on the private lan with no web access and av updates 2 times a day.
Power users are always the first to notice even the little things. Because we see them based on experiences from other systems.
Most end users who are not power users don't really see the sluggishness unless it gets real bad.
Case in point is look at the spyware apps. I can tell when they are running on a persons computer , but they can't they just think windows got slower, when we realize something is wrong they just keep using.
I have a family friend who bought a debranded refurbed HP box , cheap and with a 22 ws monitor came in under $500. It runs Vista , it runs at the moment like new because I taught them how to clean out the system every week. And they have a kid who surfs all kinds of sites , but yet it remains pretty much effortless for them. They use it for all sorts of stuff , the kid surfs youtube and all the sites and gets nasties but they cleaned out quickly.
Also I would not take your grandparents as a benchmark. Usually give it to a kid or a teen who is just realizing women exist and can be seen nude. That is a true test for any OS.
I hear this argument a lot. But I must say as a nerd its our job to protect the windows users by hiding this stuff. People sometimes don't know what they are doing and can muck up settings that even we can't remember where they are. Not every person is technical and MS had a point in hiding most settings. Although I do admit most are hidden way to much , and should have been accessible like Xp or 2000 if you log in as an admin user. Oh yeah Ms logs every one in as that, all though it seems to be a little better now.
Microsoft just hid more of the functions , so we learn the new locations and go one living.
I don't like Vista at all. But many people buying new pcs have no choice , no wait I take that back , they don't know they have a choice in OS selections. And take Vista home just like they did with Windows Me. It's not like we can have a kid out front with free ubuntu or fedora live cd's giving em out.
Sad but true , sometimes forward progress means we take a step back elsewhere.
If it happens and you end up with damaged hardware you consider it a loss.
However Sun and most heavy iron server companies now Have ILOM enabled systems. Quite easily managed from remote locations. I have loaded firmware onto e10k's in New Jersey from a project in Colombia via remote connections.
*/me shudders with the thought of the new DST and patching all the Sun boxes earlier this year*
Really are great tools Integrated Lights Out Management is , I have to say one of the best inventions that they have made. I love being able to even flash the bios on a new Sun x86_64 server from home in my boxers and t with my mountain dew in hand.
Now if they have damaged hardware they just keep using the undamaged hardware until they can get to it or until it all fails and then they got some more value from it. Typical IT department rules.
Does not the air conditioning cycle in these black boxes also remove humidity ? I worked at Sun and got to play with these containers. They remove the humidity from in coming air and are cooled with water.
It seems like the idea is to use the mines water to cool the containers and dump it back into the mine to be cooled and reused. They also have dehumidifiers built into the Black box to prevent condensating moisture inside.
I worked on wiring one with a couple cohorts and even sweating in these things is a joke , it's pretty much sucked up in about 5 minutes of being sediment in the box.

AllI know is this guys name is frickkin cool. Professor Hammer !!!
How great is that ! Almost sounds like a comic book villian.
Copper lasted how long ?

Both I and the IEEE beg to differ. You might want to read this link.

Yeah just don't use bit torrent to help market yourself , or the isps will throttle you and your fans who are trying to help you out.

Of course they will , they will just add in lawyers costs and then jack it up past $750
Slashdotting ? /.ing ? Id like to see those in the news.

Why not they are already mostly running windows. Thats enough of a security violation.

Actually I meant to use the kids as benchmarks , I am in the thought that those who use the system the most should be the bench mark.

FINALLY !!! One step closer to getting a working light saber !
Wonder if this works for wifi antenna. Would make it easier to see the people stealing my neighbors wifi signals.
