I ordered the nic's and the switch is already equipped to handle SAN traffic or so says Cisco. Also ordered more spindles. 8 more to really take the load off them. Hopefully we don't get any lock collisions like we experienced last week.

Im maxing out quad core single xeon server with 8 gigs of ram at the moment. I have narrowed it down to virtualization , even with ESX and 1 db using 2 cores and 4 gigs ram in the x64 environment it seems to hit a wall with the 2 db sets on a single box.

Even with the dual xeon setup and maxing out at 16 gigs of ram , vmware and xen can't hold a screw to the single solaris platform with mysql. Because we use it for heavy data from research I need to be able to sustain at least 300 MB on all 16 spindles. When I virtualize it's almost like I run out of i/o on the scsi chain. I can sustain 190 at most.

Might be time to move the db's off to a SAN with 10 gig ethernet. Just use a virtualized box with a couple other low use services and make them local to the location with replication of the sans to synch each db.

BTW it's true management just wants to use virtualization because its a buzz word. Thats how I got into this mess.

This is a reason why piracy is becoming such a problem.

Not only is it cheaper to download it off the net some where (pick your favorite source) the people who rip the content rip out the drm which makes it just easier to use. No worries about licenses , no worries about 2 services destroying each other, no worries about changing hardware and having to repurchase half your library because one service uses it and the other doesn't.

These companies just don't realize that drm is draconian. Multi Os platforms and easy to use video content that will play any where is what the future should hold. instead they try ad put a strangle hold on the content and tell us we can only use it on windows , and maybe if your lucky a mac. Basically telling me what OS and what hardware I should run by placing system requirements on the content , meanwhile on a Linux or Solaris box, I don't need anywhere near those resources to watch a downloaded movie.

Draconian restrictions were also used at the fall of the roman empire. I think we (the US) is really shooting ourselves in the foot with these restrictions.

And Yes I have seen these errors on my wifes Vista computer. God how I'd love to strip out vista and install ubuntu or fedora for her. Im tired of cleaning out windows systems !

I run 60 servers and there are 15 mysql servers on Solaris that I can't virtualize , even running Sun version of Xen I take huge performance losses when moved into production. I ended up just using 12 as read dbs and 3 as writes that replicate down to solve the problem but also had to move them off virtualization.

I hate when the RIAA starts spouting fud like this. I have to agree , playing with ZFS at Sun was really quite interesting , seeing what can be done and still be recoverable made me quite honestly take note of the abilities of the file system.

ZFS is going to make quite a big impact , and Microsoft will have to take note and build in support, most big business will be swapping to ZFS and since that is where Microsoft's bread and butter is coming from they will have to add support for it sooner or later. With it's list of features it will have a home on the Microsoft server line and sooner then they think or they face loosing ground.

Linux in the bug business sector is relegated to servers at the moment and not many desktops. With ZFS support linux will close the server gap even more in big business and maybe some of the desktop gap.

I like the idea of ZFS and the revolution in storage it should bring , lets hope it doesn't get tied up in court until Microsoft can come out with a file system that has it's features and strengths but is completely closed off from the OSS community.

Maybe they will get lucky and if the XM/Sirius merger is allowed to go through , they can get some of thier channels on the satellite feeds with their content.

The RIAA needs to realize the world has drasticlly changed since thier inception. and since they are milking satellite companies the same way it's only fair they hit broadcasters on terrestrial radio the same way.

I can whole heartedly say as a ameature(?) digital music producer , I want to see the RIAA disappear. Or have only them taking money for radio plays. 2 pennies to the artist and a penny to the writer. I am sure the amount of money collected will grow for bands.
