I have to manage a 21 user CPA firm. Thin clients work great EXCEPT when you have to deal with software that does not WILL NOT work in a terminal server (Quickbooks I am looking at you, and CCH/ProSystem fx). That and all the horrible 1980's abominations of software that accountants like to use. From an admin point of view its great, users like it also. Its just that 70%+ of the normal Windows software does not work on a server let alone a terminal server, it wants to run on a workstation.
Well naturally it would go something like this:

Sergeant: Two civilian gentlemen to see you... sir!
Colonel: Show them in please, sergeant.
Sergeant: Mr. Dino Vercotti and Mr. Luigi Vercotti.
The Vercotti brothers enter. They wear Mafia suits and dark glasses.
Dino: Good morning, colonel.
Colonel: Good morning gentlemen. Now what can I do for you.
Luigi: (looking round office casually) You've... you've got a nice army base here, colonel.
Colonel: Yes.
Luigi: We wouldn't want anything to happen to it.
Colonel: What?
Dino: No, what my brother means is it would be a shame if... (he knocks something off mantel)
Colonel: Oh.
Dino : Oh sorry, colonel.
Colonel: Well don't worry about that. But please do sit down.
Luigi: No, we prefer to stand, thank you, colonel.
Colonel: All right. All right. But what do you want?
Dino: What do we want, ha ha ha.
Luigi: Ha ha ha, very good, colonel.
Dino: The colonel's a joker, Luigi.
Luigi: Explain it to the colonel, Dino.
Dino: How many tanks you got, colonel?
Colonel: About five hundred altogether.
Luigi: Five hundred! Hey!
Dino: You ought to be careful, colonel.
Colonel: We are careful, extremely careful.
Dino: 'Cos things break, don't they?
Colonel: Break?
Luigi: Well everything breaks, don't it colonel. (he breaks something on desk) Oh dear.
Dino: Oh see my brother's clumsy colonel, and when he gets unhappy he breaks things. Like say, he don't feel the army's playing fair by him, he may start breaking things, colonel.
Colonel: What is all this about?
Luigi: How many men you got here, colonel?
Colonel: Oh, er... seven thousand infantry, six hundred artillery, and er, two divisions of paratroops.
Luigi: Paratroops, Dino.
Dino: Be a shame if someone was to set fire to them.
Colonel: Set fire to them?
Luigi: Fires happen, colonel.
Dino: Things burn.
Colonel: Look, what is all this about?
Dino: My brother and I have got a little proposition for you colonel.
Luigi: Could save you a lot of bother.
Dino: I mean you're doing all right here aren't you, colonel.
Luigi: Well suppose some of your tanks was to get broken and troops started getting lost, er, fights started breaking out during general inspection, like.
Dino: It wouldn't be good for business would it, colonel?
Colonel: Are you threatening me?
Dino: Oh, no, no, no.
Luigi: Whatever made you think that, colonel?
Dino: The colonel doesn't think we're nice people, Luigi.
I have a BSc in CS and the only math difference from my college between EE and CS was at most two classes (same number of classes, just at most 4 different ones between programs).
Since both programs are in the engineering college, I was one class shy of a math minor. But thats just my take.
I wonder what will happen of all that equipment that all the engineering and medical programs wont be using. Is it just me or did none of the Liberal and Fine Arts programs get the axe like Engineering and Medical? Anyway, there might be some sweet stuff for sale
but the word Engineering does not appear at all on that link. The only thing I can see that might even remotely have anything to do with submitter's comment is "It will suspend admission to those programs that do not meet these criteria." Oh wait, there it is. In the letters to studentds (grad and undergrad) Tulane just got rid of their EECS department.
ok I can see where you are going, I dont think that the question was racist (course now you make it the second or fith person in this article to call me that). Which scares the hell out of me. badly worded but at least now I have more knowlege of minority people in the IT field (which was my goal in the first place).
cause when I thought this up and posted it I was really tired and the brain was not at full capacity. I have tried to clarify in other posts; but it would seem that I am a racist according to members of the slashdot community for asking this question.
The fact that in your argument that the "dude" would be speaking spanish would be great, from my example. That is what I am looking for, role models for people who do not speak english. You can have in the US and Latin America people who have blonde hair/blue eyes fith generation Columbians all the way to dark skinned Panamanians. Race and language go hand in hand when I think of "Hispanic"; what the hell that's who and what I am.
sigh
"Why should they focus on a startup based on the ethnicity of the people starting the company?"
Because other people of the ethnicity need good stories and role models? Because when I look around I see oh 80% white dudes it the IT field in a city that is 70% Hispanic.
"They should be completely colorblind, paying race no more attention than eye color, dammit!"
Hey that would be great, but its still really odd that oh just about all the time when we talk about tech issues here on slashdot the major playors are 1)Male, 2)American and 3)White Non-Hispanic. For what ever reasons (and this artcles "discussion" is going all over the place on this), I just wanted people to introduce other people who did not match that mold, which thankfully a small few have (which is about par for the signal to noise here).
It would appear that no matter what I say will change your attittude that everything I say is racist, fine. I am done yelling at a brick wall.
"Like what? Are you saying the "usual" tech magazines ignore stories based on race? If so that's quite an accusation. Do you have anything to back it up?"
The usual tech magazines do not have articles in spanish; nor do they focus on minority based start ups trying to make it. How is that for a start? How can a Latin American kid (who only speaks spanish) learn about OSS (or anything tech) if all they see are white dudes talking english? Christ I messed up on the submission, badly wording it; but I think all my _OTHER_ posts in the discussion has tried to clarify my intent. Are there role models, and if so who?
Apenas deseo encontrar a la nueva gente que puedo demostrar a mi hija a cuando ella desea aprender sobre los culturas de su padre (latino y technico). And if you dont care about anyone's race, good for you. I do, I want to be able to point out to people in Cd. Juarez and say "see look there is a great role model in Miguel de Icaza (or anyone else) in why you should start messing around with computers".
because sometimes kids need something they can relate to, look at the documentary "Viva Baseball"; dark skinned spanish speaking Latin Americans talking about their role models; people that they can relate to because they are "just like me".
Those magazines exsist to support a market that does not get the time of day at a usuall tech magazine. Check your head, cause I get the feeling you are out of touch.
Basically because I get tired of seeing in Hispanic Business or other minority based trade magazines a total lack of innovators, they focus on COO's or some VP of finance. I tried to think of oh I dont know good role models for non-white kids to have when it comes to the tech world. My CS department and college graduate the 2nd highest number of hispanics in the US, and its just hard to think of people (due to well just know knowing of any) that I can point out to people and say "see they are a great [developer/innovator/developer] that you can use for a role model". Females have Admiral Hopper and Lady Babbige; who can minorities look to?
but a live CD is something that could be abused quite a bit by really bad people. (ex) FBI raids your residence, they confiscate your machine, it has no hard drive since you are using a live cd that then connects to some arbitraty server to store files that need to be written. Sure traffic flowed from your computer and you did stuff, but its not on your computer.... I am still working things out how one could customise the live cd to do the things you would want but this is thankfully under the radar (well till I opened my mouth)
Asus has some neat SFF boxes, and places like Cappuccinopc.com also have some neat boxes. But will Asus make their Terminator series with a AMD or AMD64 processor? I know that Shuttle and other have AMD64 solutions (which will more or less be my first choice) but Asus has some neat stuff.
For some reason the text of the article (and just the article) in most of the games sections are far to the right and white text on a white background. Am I the only one having this problem?

nice
I see it on the graphics page, but not in the store
what gives?
"ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of DDR SDRAM and dual-link DVI"
STILL WITH THE Radeon 9700!
man what does it take to get a better video card?
better not tell the people at Architosh.com that there is not a MacOS CAD workstation

bah! I see your chair and raise you a lazy-boy! http://www.ergoquest.com/pagethree.htm
besides it being hard to find AMD64 laptops to compare to, they all have the Radion 9700 chipset. Dangit, where is my PCI-Express AMD64 laptop?
Agreed, the few times I was able to eat at the mothership the cafeteria there was amazing. So many options to choose from and great quality of food.

The Latter Day Saints were seen as a cult for a long time. Thats why they kept moving west, because they would be burned out of town.
the first link gives a 500 server error. darn it
