No, what he has in mind is a terrorist plot to let off a nuke or chem weapon in a major city. The question he's posing is "how far do you want to take this privacy route?" It's a bit like those morons in Texas strutting around with their sidearms. A bit of thought would lead them to a terrorist group doing a lot more than strutting around with their sidearms, but they'll feel good about themselves because they are armed.

As others below have mentioned, it is very difficult to formally verify large complex systems. However, it is made even more complex in that there aren't enough research results to cover such a system in its complexity. Also, computer scientists tend to think the world revolves around their code, so if they get that correct, then the system will run correctly. The real world isn't like that, and it is not all captured in software, much of the system is hardware. Trying to capture the correct interaction between hardware and software is very, very hard...and it isn't clear that even if you could that you could verify the result before the universe dies.

"As for the universe we don't have a clue." Actually, we do. The Universe is expanding because of dark energy. In few trillion years, there will be only island galaxies (I might be off by a trillion or two) which cannot see anything around them, not even the echos of the Big Bang we can see now. After that, the galaxies collapse into black holes and there is nothing...which is actually something...quantum virtual particle pair creation means more or less that emptiness is unstable. So eventually, another small region could inflate into another universe. It is possible that we have a multiverse, and in one of those universes, you are correct, but not this one.

Clinton only balanced the budget because with a Republican Congress, he wasn't allowed to spend. The economy was going through the dot.com bubble which inflated tax receipts. He sent bombers into the Balkans only after several massacres happened and it was clear to all concerned that the Serbs were the major dicks there.

And liberals are generally not in favor of free market reforms or free trade agreements. They believe the U.S. is still some sort of island utopia and live all by itself.

Negotiating with the Commies has been a conservative aim since Eisenhower. It was what they used to keep the Kremlin in check until Bush Jr. took his eye off the ball. Reagan did, however, government somewhat like a liberal. Well he had too seeing as he had Democrat congress who agreed to a military buildup and tax cuts. The agreement was they were supposed to cut spending to balance it all out, but they more or less didn't do it and continued expanding social programs.

The politics of Reagan and Clinton is LOT more complicated than your analysis.

Errrr....because the CIA doesn't want to be responsible for a million dead Iraqis? Aside from the obvious moral issues, the legal ones would be awful if anyone found out...and it would come out sooner or later. It would be considered a war crime.

While the CIA is not part of the Defense Department, when asked by some Senate committee members if the U.S. would carpet bomb Daesh, General Paul Selva (Air Force) said, "The U.S. military will never carpet bomb." This is why Hayden said recently that were a President Trump to order carpet bombing, the Pentagon would refuse to carry out the order thus causing a Constitution crisis.

It is clear why they wouldn't do this or take out the dam, the U.S. military does not want to kill millions of people. They learned the hard way in Iraq that you cannot kill your way out the problem. And it causes every Tom, Dick, and Joe-Bob Ahmed who had a family member killed to join the opposition. Other generals during that war and in Afghanistan said the same thing.

Now if the people running for the presidency would come up to speed, then they wouldn't be saying similar stupid things.

And the NSA is not the brain that can crack anything, that only comes from TV. NSA is actually quite circumspect in any promises to technical virility. The woman professor, Landau, on the panel in yesterday's Inquisition more or less told the representatives that the FBI was behind the times technically and in terms of mindset. Too bad Comey was on the earlier panel, I'd have like to see her tell that to his face, and she certainly seemed prepared to do it.

Issa is generally a dolt about most things. His understanding of tech is at least 20 years old.

What was really entertaining was watching Trey Gowdy act like a chicken with his hair on fire and being very angry about it. One expected him to cross the streams and blame Benghazi on Apple. Sensenbrenner from Wisconsin was similarly brain-dead asking why Apple didn't come to the hearing with a bill or a list of fixes for Congress to implement, Gowdy seemed incensed about this as well but one got the impression anything to get incensed about would do, he isn't particular. Me thinks he'll be running for President on the Eejit Ticket next go 'round. Comey came across as lame technically, the NYC district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr., was more or less ready to run any civil liberties under the bus and didn't think there was any issue as long as he could throw someone in the klink if they got in his way.
