  1. Smart Card Meters? on "Smart" Parking Meters Considered Dumb · · Score: 1

    http://www.ci.des-moines.ia.us/headlines/smartcard.htm

In Des Moines, Iowa, the regular parking meters are being replaced with new ones that can accept parking cards that you load up with money. You place the card into the meter and wait until the preferred amount of time is paid for, then remove the card. Now, here's the cool part: when you come back to your car, you insert your card and it refunds the unused time back to the card! No more paying for extra parking time!

"Mr Nott, from Fulham, west London, had just one pint of blood and an elementary operating theatre, but the operation, performed in October, was a success and the teenager made a full recovery."

The term "full recovery" for an amputation seems like a bit of dark humor when you think about it too long.

Seriously, if backward compatibility is important, then buy the higher-end system...they are still here (and it sounds like they're not going away), and they still have backward compatibility...so quit complaining...the lower end system just isn't for you. For some people, however, the backward compatibility might not be worth the extra money...for them, the new low-end system will be perfect. You get what you pay for.

  4. Hey, wait a sec... on Putting Canadian Piracy in Perspective · · Score: 1

Isn't Canada one of those countries that has extra royalties that consumers pay when buying storage devices, because they can be used to store pirated data? If so, than they really shouldn't be going after software/music/movie pirates, because all Canadians have already paid the "piracy tax." If they're still going to go after them, then they'd better stop charging said royalties, because that's tantamount to fraud.

You must be missing the point: Even thinking about loading up IE is likely enough to get your system infected by spyware...let alone actually running it...let alone actually visiting Wal-Mart's website with it. I think I'd probably be safer against spyware by visiting porn sites than I would visiting walmart.com. Of course, since Wal-Mart's dong the whole DRM thing, I wouldn't be interested anyway, so I guess it's a moot point in my case.

...but minimum wages are a fairly recent (and slightly socialist-sounding) innovation which some people don't even support, and differences in living costs and suchlike make a global minimum wage an odd-sounding idea.
I agree. In some countries, $5 USD an hour would make those people into millionaires by their standards. Likewise, many things in London will cost the same number of pounds as they do in dollars over here in the US.. which means they cost twice as much over there. Also, their jobs tend to pay around the same number of pounds per hour as ours do dollars per hour...meaning they get paid twice as much.

So, if anyone gets to set a global minimum wage, I want it to be England.. 7-8 pounds per hour into USD doesn't sound too bad for a minimum.. ;)

"Nature magazine recently conducted a head-to-head competition between Wikipedia and Britannica, having experts compare 42 science-related articles. The result was that Wikipedia had about 4 errors per article, while Britannica had about 3. However, a pair of endevouring Wikipedians dug a little deeper and discovered that the Wikipedia articles in the sample were, on average, 2.6 times longer than Britannica's - meaning Wikipedia has an error rate far less than Britannica's."
Maybe teachers should do a little more research before assuming that Wikipedia is so inaccurate. After all, apparently Britannica shouldn't be used as a reference either in that case.

This just makes me sick. People should be able to speak out their grievances against their government without fearing for their lives or freedom.
