Someone mod this up. Notice Hemos's post - thoughts and prayers rather than absolute lack of concern for finding the wife and a focus on "what's the future of Reiser 4 if he's guilty". A good post would have been one that included the find Nina Reiser website.

He's arrested for killing his wife and this post asks what's the deal with Reiser 4? Classy kdawson, very classy.

I don't understand why this would be illegal. Immoral maybe, and a definite bug, but illegal? Google could just as easily dump serverscheck out of its index. There's nothing illegal about that. Why do they legally have to return results favorable to serverscheck?

I come into South Station and for weeks after London my commuter train would get stopped in Norwood for about five minutes while police with dogs walked the aisles of the train. Not once did the searches inconvenience me or anyone else on my train in any form, not once were they violating anyone's rights. They mostly seemed to be looking for unattended bags. I think most of the police presence in South Station and North Station is for show, and the rest is to make sure the trains are searched between the time the trains come in and the trains leave.

Isn't the fact that Google is already in the market a pretty big barrier to entry? No. If this were true, then Google would never have existed - AltaVista and Yahoo predated Google and were very much leaders. If someone came up with a better search engine, there's nothing that'll stop users from switching. They don't need to go out and buy a new web browser to use a different search engine, they don't need to subscribe to a different ISP. Those would be barriers to entry. The only thing needed in creating a search engine is a lot of bandwidth and some servers for indexing. With nutch/lucene, most of the software needed is already written.

This was insightful? What's a couple thousand dollar gamble for most people that might have missed Yahoo's rise to fame and fortune? Knowing what Yahoo was/is doing and how that compares to what Google is doing now shows that this might be a better bet and people are willing to sink that cash into it. Tell that to anyone that bought Yahoo! in 1999. Or 2000. Investing is about realizing gains, not about buying into something cool. A PE of 110, and the absolutely absurd market valuation Google has in a market with no barriers to entry is a really bad investment.

Yes, I think you need to read the book before saying that he's a guy trying to make a quick buck and not another victim of Microsoft's anticompetitive actions in the mid-90's.
