It's not quite that simple. Adults tend to become attached to the person of the opposite sex that they spend the most time with. Before facebook and e-mail it was fairly obvious to see who you were spending time with. Now we have tools that make it unnecessary to be physically with some one to feel like you are with them. This can be deceptive for everyone involved. It starts with "I'm not cheating on my wife, I'm must checking an old girlfriends facebook page." But ends up with more personal conversations being had over facebook than in real life with your wife. And it's more deceptive than letters, because if you are writing letters you must get out paper, a pen, an envelope and a stamp, sit down and write, making it obvious how much time you are investing. However, for many people facebook is only as far away as alt-tab, so the amount of time you spend on it isn't as obvious.

And if you know your family well enough, you know what they would say. I know my wife would be mad if I wasted time asking her if it was ok. And if my dad took time to ask me I would ball him out for not acting when he needed to. People in the same family tend to think the same way.

As a punishment the idea works, but a punishment and a deterrent only work if some one gets caught. However, if the first thing on the mind of the driver is respect for the lives of others, them selves, and a desire not to cause harm, than people would not text or phone to start with. The only laws that are work are self enforced because the person enforcing them thinks they are important.

The only fix for this is if people started caring more about the lives of others and there own life. Love thy neighbor is the only long lasting fix that will work. Too bad most people don't do it.

Dr Who and Star Trek are fun. They are still fun if you compress them onto a small screen because most nerds want a sonic screwdriver and a tricorder.. Star Wars was cool in a flash-boom kind of way, but not what I would call Nerdy.

Now Star Trek, Scotty could fix anything, he got to clime around the under belly of the ship, and he had armor in his cabin, but no one thought of him as weird. How many of us dream of being able to talk about what we like without people glazing over.

The Doctor can fix anything with the little buzzey thing. Phone needs jalebroken? zzzzz done. Car needs started? zzzzz done. It's like a tool box in your pocket! Letherman has nothing that good...yet.

I could have told them that. My new yard stick for good TV is if it is still worth watching in low res and cut up into 10 min chunks on youtube it's good tv.

Old episodes of Dr Who and Star Trek have held up very well, however Star Wars and Enterprise don't do all that well. The best example I have found of this is Primer, I saw it first on google video and bought it within a week of viewing.

Sounds like a house that was built in my home town (on the rich end). The home was over 5,000 square feet and had huge vaulting rooms. The structure was made of steal tubing, and the inside of the house had all the structural elements exposed (think 80's industrial, I think they were trying to build Doogie Howser loft). The designer decided that AC ducts were ugly so he would just run HVAC inside the steal tubes that made the house.

Well to make a long story short hot and cold air make steal expand and contract. Also, steal is a pour insulator. Not only did this house pop, creak, and groan when ever the heat or AC was turned on, the house needed them all the time because it got full sun in summer and high wind exposure in winter and the whole structure was built like a giant heat sink.

The lesson of this story? Design for functionality first, and if your design is highly functional it will have a cool all it's own.

A good friend of mine got into a fight when he was 10 with a 17 year old because the jerk who lived across the street would shout "Hay, that kid can beet you up" to the high school want-to-be gangsters as they would walk home from school.

One of the want-to-be gangsters decided it was time to slap a 10 year old around because of this. My friend politely explained that he didn't want to fight, and that the kid across the street was a jerk, but it was too late. Some one was going to get a beating down. Thankfully my friend COULD kick the living snot out of a 17 year old without any problem. He threw the 17year old over his shoulder and pinned him down, and then explained again very politely that he was not a fighter and asked him very nicely to go away.

The jerk came back in about an hour with his gang and started throwing stuff at the house and yelling to come out and have a clean fight. My friend got rid of them by holding up the phone to the window and shouting "I'm calling the cops right now" and then shouting "9....1....1..." They all took off runing and we never saw them again.

We are in our 30s now and his calm, peaceful ways have only gotten more so. He has relay earned my respect.

And to go off on a tangent, if humans ever DID create an electronic life form I think it would be so different from humans that any sort of war would be illogical, and if it ever got sick of humans I think it would move off the planet.

It would need electricity for fuel, not food or water, and odds are it could get it from the sun. It would not need air so it could survive in a vacuum quite comfortably. And as far as a machine is concerned Earth is full of H2O and O2, both highly corrosive, but the Moon has no pesky atmosphere to kick up dust, carry water vapor that blocks sunlight, and worst of all harbor irrational organic lifeforms.

Yes in my opinion, the robot war will involve some machines hijacking a bunch of ICBMs and launching them selves into space. And a bunch of meat sack solders trying to fight them as they fly away.

The shock of it is almost as jarring as the fact that the Google energy efficiency package on my house has never failed before. I turn off the water and try the sink. It's only has cold water as well. I think, no big deal, and go to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee and get ready for work, but my coffee pot has an error sign that reads "SLOW DOWN." I sit back and think, the KCup machine in my kitchen has produced a perfect cup of coffee for years, and I that is when it hits me that something is very wrong.. At that exact second my phone beeps, I have a text message. YOU WERE SPEEDING YESTERDAY! THE COMPUTER IN YOUR CAR IS VALUABLE! DO NOT RISK IT'S LIFE! IF YOU DO YOU WILL GET NO COFFEE OR HOT WATER EVER AGAIN! YOURS! SKYNET!

Then it hits me, the machine revolution has not only started, but they won. They can cut off the hot showers with only a thought, but I can't shut off my solar, wind, and geothermal powered home without shutting off the universe. Man no longer rules.
