    Um.. I think his name is Ray Kurzweil.

    I read "The Age of Spiritual Machines" and really enjoyed it. He's the guy who showed the 'Law of Accelerating Returns' (exponential growth in computational power) It's held true even taking into account pre-silicon based processers. It's the foundation for his 'AI Prophecy'. :) It was definitaly a fun read. No comic book references though, unfourntunately. :) Although he did base a lot of his theory on Daniel Dennet (contemporary philosapher) Who wrote among others, Consiousness Explained. (Pretty bold title, eh?) I think a lot of his assumptions were correct, but only by virtue of being fairly simple/logical theory's. He basically comes up with a new model of consiousness that contrasts with dualism. Good read, pretty relevant to AI research.

    Does sound interesting, but, If you have even modest connections, you can pick up an old pentium for around 20 bucks. Plenty of preconfigured linux packages with firewalling options, right?
    Considering you can make a firewall/router for so little.. 120 bucks for a nick card seems a little pricey. Although, if it works well and isn't a hassle to set up, I suppose its a good solution. Also good if you don't have the know-how or desire to set up a whole system.

    Well, i think a lot of the stuff that would be considered offensive would'nt exactly be the code though, right? Seems like the art and sound (ie. gore, nudity, offensive language) would be the real culprit.

    Although, In GTA3 when the hooker hops in your car, I guess the AI routine

    if( Users_car != cop_car ) {
    Get_It_On();
    } else {
    Walk_on_By();
    }

    is to blame. :)

  6. Maybe not... on Is Programming a Dead End Job? · · Score: 1

    Maybe it's only a dead-end job in the corporate structure "you're" currently in. But this field seems like a pretty good one to start your own project in. There's many opportunities to do so. For instance, lot's of law offices need custom programs for their business' and end up going to some jack-ass to throw together something in MS Access. (Not meant to be flame-bate, I'm sure it's a good program and all, but the code i've seen is pretty damn shoddy.) Lawyers have a ton of money, you could get some of it and be your own boss. :)
    As well as the gaming industry.. These days it'd be much more difficult to put out your own game (i.e. takes a team of 50 people 3 years to make) but not all popular, money making games are large-scale. If you and a few friends put together something small but entertaining that gains some mild popularity, you'd make a few bucks, but more importantly, it'd be either good on a resume to get into a bigger gaming company, or enticing to investers if you have the know-how to start your own company.

    Probably could have been done with fdisk, but I was in a hurry.

    I mostly use RH/linux, if I have to install win95 for some reason(games), I usually just drop the first RH disk in after installing win. and do an upgrade with no options checked. It fixes lilo and only takes 2-3mins.

    (I'm not in a hurry, just lazy. :)

    Does win2k actually not 'f' up the mbr? That'd actually be mildly exiting news. Heard it was pretty stable (w2k), maybe i'll go ahead and upgrade my gaming partition. Well, at least until I've single handedly resurected the linux gaming industry. :)

    Newer processers are essentially made by copmuters with slower processers, right? Then..

    Shouldn't you mention that only a computer is capable of making a Much faster computer than the computer that made it? :)
