Well, that's one thing. The other is in say 30 years, we find a small colony of life, we need to be sure that it is truly native to Mars, not something we left there. Sure, a simple DNA test might confirm that it is bacteriacillus from Earth, but it might not. With those extreme conditions and the constant bombardment of UV radiation, whatever organism may mutate to a genetic pattern that matches nothing on Earth, but is close enough to make scientists scratch their heads and say, "We are pretty sure it's from Earth. Such an uncertain find would also taint any other life finds on Mars and would leave us with no answer to the question, "Is there life beyond Earth?". We would be forced to look elsewhere for that answer. Getting to Mars is expensive. Getting anywhere is even MORE expensive. Let's not contaminate the best lab we have.
Oh how I wish I had mod points. Creating demand is way more effective than handing out cash. If only the GOP would recognize that and get off their tax cut crack pipe.
-Rick
"Tax cuts" are not "handing out cash". A tax cut means you're not taking as much money.
As for creating demand, the most effective way of creating demand is to lower the price. When you tax a corporation, the corporation does not pay those taxes. The CEO does not pay those taxes. Who pays those taxes? Their customers pay those taxes! If you tax energy, such as taxing "big oil", they don't pay them, anyone that uses oil pays it. It is basically a flat tax. You know, where everyone is taxed the same regardless of their income. Poor people pay the exact same amount in taxes per gallon as rich people do.
So, if you want to create demand, lower the price. There are three ways to government may lower the price: 1) Lower taxes 2) Subsidize (hand out cash, as was done here. This one tends not to work) 3) Tax the competition. (In this case, tax all non-green energy or simply don't tax green energy)
All of these methods create artificial pricing, which creates artificial demand. None of these are viable over the long term.
Of course, I learned all of this in Jr. High. Maybe you should review your 8th grade government class before you start accusing the GOP of being on the crack pipe. There are valid, logical reasons to cut taxes or to simply not raise them. Regardless of what you read on Huffington Post, Republicans are not out to screw poor people.
From TFA: "It seems unlikely that most people — or even technology enthusiasts — will want to buy a product that involves sitting alone and wearing a little helmet."
Apparently they don't know very many/. readers.
I have no problem enjoying media alone. Sometimes, depending on the media, alone is the best way to enjoy it.
It's not the alone part that bothers me. It is the fact that I have to cover my eyes and ears and sit there alone. Nope! Not gonna happen. I'm a bit too paranoid for that. I could not enjoy the experience because I would constantly be wondering "Is someone coming into my house right now?".
It's the same reason I can't go to sleep with head phones on. I need more that just my sense of touch, smell and taste to feel comfortable about what is around me.
You only leak what you need to leak in order to expose the bad acts and bad actors, but no more than that.
And who gets to decide who are the "bad" actors and who are the good ones? What gives WikiLeaks the right to be my judge and jury? No investigation, no trial, no chance for rebuttal, just BAM, and your name is attached to something "bad" that may or may not have happened, or that you may or may not have had anything at all to do with.
Your innocence in this case is not relevant. Getting the opportunity to defend yourself is not important. The lives of your family, your wife, kids, parents, distant cousins who you never met, may be the price for the "bad" things that some document says you did.
Sorry, but a right to fair trial and an investigation into the allegations are a basic, fundamental, global human right. WikiLeaks has stripped that basic human right from everyone whose name is on any document that has ever been leaked by them.
Don't use Stem Cells. Mr. Perry - please explain yourself.
Your Friends, ~The Tea Party
Sigh. Looks like my comment didn't make it in time to educate this ignorant AC. Here it is again: Yes, Rick Perry is against embryonic stem cell research. Yes, this treatment did NOT use embryonic stem cells.
Please do not say that Republicans or conservatives are against stem cell research. Conservatives are against the destruction of an embryo for the purposes of scientific research. Embryonic stem cell research is still government funded provided that it uses old stem cell lines or adult derived stem cells.
With that said, let's leave the straw-men in the field.

The problem with Europa is that the interesting bits we want to get at are under (at least) 20 kilometers of ice. Whoever figures out how to breach that without destroying the environment beneath is going to be a winner in the big NASA lottery, and enable a lot of exciting exploration. Callisto probably has a similar subsurface ocean, for instance -
If I understand what I've read about Europa, we may not need to get through the ice at all. Due to tidal tugging, Europa is full of cracks. When those cracks form, it is believed that liquid water cycles to the surface and freezes again. It's Europa's version of plate tectonics. We should be able to get an excellent idea of what is below the surface by taking a sample of the surface ice on the surface near these cracks or even within the cracks themselves. As a bonus, whatever we find will be pre-frozen. Kinda like the frozen veggie aisle at your local grocer.
Why we have not sent a probe to land on Europa by now is beyond me.
A nice bit of unsubstantiated spin and propaganda, copied and pasted from the talking points.
Copied and pasted? Wow! Whoever I copied and pasted that from really needs an editor.
No, sorry. Those thoughts are my very own. My sources are my experiences living in both Michigan, a strong union state where the unions have destroyed the industry there, and in Texas, a non-union state.
When I was in Michigan, I saw people whose whole job was to hold up a sign at construction sites saying, "Slow down. My daddy/mommy works here" who could have easily been replaced by a sign holding stand. But, instead, these people were making about $25/hr with full benefits that they didn't pitch in for. Their salaries were paid from my state and local income taxes as well as my state and local sales taxes combined with my state and local property taxes. Of course, I don't include any taxes on businesses there, which, as you know, are paid by the consumers, not the businesses. If you haven't noticed, the Michigan and the states around it are called "The Rust Belt" because so much industry has left, leaving large rusted out factories that have become a drain on the public and an eyesore to passer bys.
On the other hand, Texas is a non-union state. My pay here is about the same as I made in Michigan, except I don't have to pay state or local income taxes on it. my property taxes are bit higher but strangely enough, my sales tax is actually lower. Of course, the cost of living is much lower here because businesses are not taxed to death, making everything more affordable. Public employees make about the same as those in the midwest because they don't pay people to hold signs. Those savings mean that the guys with the shovels may be paid more and get better benefits. Sure, they have to pitch in a few bucks to help pay for it, but with no state income tax, they still end up ahead. See, without paying 100% benefits and for people to stand around and do nothing, the state may get by without income taxes. Even when these jobs are handled by private contractors, which most are, these contractors are able to make lower bids, saving the state money, and they are still able to pay their employees on par with their counterparts in the midwest. Like I said before though, since there is no union to siphon off the workers' pay and no state/local income taxes, the workers actually earn more spending power in Texas than in Michigan.
CEOs get their calls answered by Senators and Governors. Individual workers do not; but the head of the UAW does, and that is how their interests are represented.
Personally, I'd prefer my Senators and Governors stay out business, but since you brought it up, politicians don't get elected by union bosses and CEO's. They are elected by votes, and those come from the people. Also, Senators and Governors DO take calls from union bosses, but they don't take calls from the private contractor or the small business owner or the common consumer. Those are the people who are screwed over by the unions, not the CEO's.
that's your answer? they should be happy to have jobs?
I suppose if you wanted a race to the bottom, your position would make sense. For the vast majority of society, though, your position is that of an out of touch elitist idiot.
People like you are what's wrong with our society.
Or, you can strike or demand unreasonable wages to put your company out of business or raise prices on those poor consumers who are having trouble making ends meet who are not ripping off their employers at the expense of the paying public.
Remember, this is about the wired telephone service wing of Verizon. This is a public utility for the areas they service. Customers who want/need wired telephone service to their homes of businesses have no choice but to pay whatever price Verizon demands.
Finally, while you may view pitching in for benefits as a pay cut for Verizon employees, you have to keep in mind that health prices have gone up considerably. Mine rose over 50% this year along. You can blame Obamacare of those greedy insurance companies, but whatever the reason, it costs Verizon more to provide these benefits. (Note, those greedy insurance companies existed two years ago when my premiums stayed the same. Obamacare is the only thing that has change... but I digress).
Today, people say, "why should those union guys have it so good? I want them to suffer just like me!" And now the middle class has turned against itself, and the gap widens to historic levels. I hope it'll turn back around some day, but our corporate masters have gotten really good at turning us against ourselves, and at labor unions that exist to help us.
See, back in the Utopian day you speak of, union members were proud of their work and it was well known. You could expect on American cars to be the best, most reliable cars on the planet. An union constructed building would be one that you knew was not only up to code, but surpassed it. Union members were their own foreman and made sure that all union members were doing their jobs RIGHT.
That's not the case any more. Now you have union members standing around waiting for the union electrician to plug something into a wall socket. You have union members enter a "job bank" requesting a job that is not available in their area and sit around and nothing for years waiting for a job that no longer exists. Now you have union members who are completely incompetent, lazy and cocky because they know they can not get fired. Now you have people literally attacking, even shooting and vandalizing non-union shops and their own coworkers who don't join them. To make sure the operations continue, they want to make all union votes completely open, meaning union thugs may see how you voted to make sure you voted right.
Meanwhile, you have workers that still take pride in their job who work hard and put in the extra hours to get ahead only to see their promotion go to some union member that does nothing but has been at the company doing nothing longer than you have and union rules will mandate they get promoted before someone newer. You have small businesses trying to compete getting put out of business because they are getting harassed by union members of their trade or lose out to jobs because a union may provide kickbacks to your former customers to make union work cheaper "Walmart style". You bust your ass to have a job, pay for your own benefits and struggle to pay your taxes only to see those that are paid with your tax dollars go on strike and literally shut down your government because they DON'T want to pay for their benefits. They want you to pay for your health insurance AND theirs. There are even unions that force non-union members to pay union dues.
And you don't understand why people don't like unions any more? I too hope it will turn back someday to a day when a union not only takes care of their workers, but also guarantees that a union product is a BETTER product. When times get tough, a union is willing to make concessions, even if only temporary, to help the company make it through a tough time and ensure that everyone still has a job. I want to see a union throw a member out for showing up late or doing shoddy work. Until that happens, unions will continue to get the reputation they deserve.
If the executives were not satisfied with their compensation, they could have left.
That's what workers could do as well,(snip)
How does that change anything? They'll just hire new people who do like to be fucked in the ass financially.
That's what happens when you work a job that anyone can do. If you quit, they will hire anyone to do it, probably for less pay. I guess they should be thankful that the company keeps them around when they could easily fire them or lay them off and hire someone else to do the job for less pay.
See, the trick is to find a job that no one else can do or that no one else wants to do. The first one requires skill and a lot of hard work to get to that position. The second just requires that you are willing to do crap work. Management fits into the first category. People that clean up crime scenes, for example fit into the second. Both get paid well. Everyone else is expendable and doesn't get paid much.
If a republican gets elected as a president next year I would say very likely, you can bet this will continue or get much worse over 4 years. I imagine in 10 years from now we will pay $500 for internet and phone and it will cost as much as a new car lease. This has got to stop somehow as with medical care it is unsustainable.
Strange. In the past 30 years or so, 20 of those had a Republican in office. Yet, I'm not paying $500 for Internet. For that matter, just five years ago when Republicans held the White House, the Senate and House of Representatives, I was paying less for just about everything than I am now.
I other words, you are either severely deluded, just plain ignorant, or a fucking slimy liar. So, which one is it?
We all know it was created just a few thousand years ago on day 4.
NASA could have saved the trip if they'd just asked the local priest!
Pastor, not "priest". The Roman Catholic Church is much more friendly to the idea of a non-literal creation (from a Biblical perspective) than many popular Protestant groups.
I was raised in a Protestant household. I now lead a Protestant household (Baptist). I've been to several churches, camps, meetings, and various gatherings. I have never, ever met a preacher or other leader that believed the EarthSunMoonStars were 6000 years old. Now, I'm sure that these people exist and use religion as their reasoning, but there are nutjobs in every group. Saying that because of the occasional nutjob believes it, all or most must believe the same thing is no different that saying because the occasional Muslim wants to kill all humans then all Muslims want to kill all humans.
HERE. Would it be fair for me to say that many NASA scientists are spies? Of course not. Then why is it fair for you to stereotype any other group based on a few nutjobs who mental illness is in no way related to whatever group you are using them to belittle?
It's not just "a few nutjobs," dude -- half the US population, for example, thinks creationism is true. It's not stereotyping if the trait being selected for is shared by a large percentage of the outgroup. Half is a large percentage, for any value of "large" you care to assert. Which is why I'm sceptical of your assertion that you've never met a creationist "preacher or other leader." Given the pervasiveness of creationism in the US population, and the assumption that you are living in America, it is statistically highly unlikely that your assertion is true.
Believing that "God created the heavens and the Earth" is not the same as believing that he did it 6000 years ago and planted dinosaur bones to screw with our heads.
We all know it was created just a few thousand years ago on day 4.

Even if TSA could tell with 100% accuracy who was a pilot, who was a passenger and who was a terrorist, it wouldn't solve anything:
"Hello, my name is Achmed bin Farteen. Your wife and son are with me. Would you like to speak to them?" <hands the wife the phone long enough to convince the pilot that he really does have the pilot's family with him.> "I will begin torturing your family by <insert fiendish plan here> unless you carry this package through security for me and leave it in the third stall in the second men's bathroom to the right after you clear security..."
"Hello FBI? Listen, someone just called from phone number 555-555-5555, yeah, it's on caller ID. I'm looking it at it. Well, anyways, they have my family hostage wherever that phone is. So, if you could get them back and get me a package that looks like this one here, I'll go ahead and place it where they want. Be sure to beat the shit out of whoever picks it up.
K? Thanx."
Or, if they were smart enough to use *67 before dialing, you won't see the phone number, but I guarantee you the FBI can.
Yes it will, tons of lovely publicity for the cause. Then as the fighter jets scramble, it plows into the middle of downtown wherever, 15 minutes from the airport by air.
Dude! Take from everyone else who has already told you... that shit won't work. Like someone else said, the plane would never make it past the gate, assuming you could even get to the plane in the first place. It's not like you can just show up with a pilot's uniform and board a plane. That hasn't worked since Leonardo DiCaprio did it in a movie! You don't even have to RTFA to know that it will not only deal with various forms of ID, but will also use biometrics.
The other reason your plan sux is because these people happen to know each other. My brother is a pilot. He leaves from the same airport two to three times a week and flies to the same airport where he leaves from the other two to three times a week. The TSA guys recognize him on sight. If you show up with a pilot's uniform and they have never seen you before, you will get a going over.
But all that's neither here nor there. All this is proposing is not making pilots going through a pat-down. There is nothing here that changes a pilot's access to a plane. So if your dumb-ass plan would work if these proposals went into effect, then there is no reason they won't work now. Like I said, this is just allowing pilots to not get the same going over that passengers do. I mean, it's no like they are going to be locked in the cockpit anyway. Why would they need a weapon to take over the plane? Most planes have two pilots. Wait for the other to pee, lock the door and push the nose down. No one is going to break into the cockpit at zero or negative G's. So, searching the pilots is kinda stupid anyway. The don't need a weapon to hijack a plane... they already have it!

There are three ways to government may lower the price:
1) Lower taxes
2) Subsidize (hand out cash, as was done here. This one tends not to work)
3) Tax the competition.
Apparently they don't know very many /.

Your Friends,
~The Tea Party
Sigh. Looks like my comment didn't make it in time to educate this ignorant AC. Here it is again:
Yes, Rick Perry is against embryonic stem cell research.

Why bother?
Looks like they are trying to resurrect the brand using flash and possibly other distribution channels.. See HERE for an example. When I tried to play Asteroids, it took me to my facebook page and asked for permission... I said no.
The non-union labor isn't benefiting either, so your questions is a false dilemma.
Were they laid off or something? I mean, they have jobs in this extremely tough economy. How are they NOT benefiting?

Hi! I'm Captain Jack!
Hi, Jack!
Wow!!!! I see what you did there and it's brilliant. It's a shame I just commented on another post or I'd mod you up.
