you say that like its a bad thing... if people stopped believing the bullshit, and took a long hard look at where they were, and realised that we have built a society which only rewards the few, when it could so easily be so much better, maybe they would give up. i know i have. (and its your fault!)

  2. Re:WHAAAAAA! on EA Games: The Human Story · · Score: 0

well, i believe socialism (ie the workers suffer such a disparity of power compared to the owners that only the state or unions can force some reasonable conditions) is the main reason for the improvement in working conditions. since EA seem to be happy to shag their workforce, specially since the jackass you mention is happy to collude (for a while), you can see that pure human decency is often not enough. so i was saying your insight was more on the jackass than the rest of the post :)

  3. What happened to win-win? on Novell Pulls Out Their Ace Against SCO · · Score: 0

Hey, i dont do business, but i read the book. (Covey - 7 habits of highly effective people) he said effective people aim for an outcome that benefits every partner. a bit like open source then. sadly the win-lose outcome is not sustainabe without forming a "winner takes all" society. oh wait, it already is :-(

Self hate is a destructive emotion. just imagine thinking instead of reacting... btw I love Linux...., but Microsoft has an effective and successful coporate mindset. (maybe you were confusing them with the current administration in USA?) and i thought Google had already sold out to commercial interests. a bit more competition must be a good thing.

If you imagine a small company could make a patent violation stick against a huge coporation, you're dreaming. there will be exceptions, but remember the Biro (you have got these in the states, right?) or ballpoint. patented but not able to chase the big companies who ripped it off. or was the sapphire stylus (remember LP's) a good idea? ripped off by polyXXX and left inventor in penury after years of legal action. In fact, your only real chance is to get the big coporations to patent it for you, but then, thats not the point, surely?

Is there a person on earth who doesn't have a registration to the New York Times and the Washington Post?

Maybe all those people who realise that they were just an outlet for government propaganda regarding the Iraq war? never mind, Saddam was a bad man anyway? probably they'll be telling you the truth next time something big comes up.
Anyhow, it takes me all day to read /.

I guess im an idolator, but i dont think Tivo will ever be done better again. ive seen a lot of free to air recorders, satellite(sky +, the + means + 40 quid), and PVR software, and none of it has the features or class of the tivo programming. Its not the hardware (which is ok ish) its the organisation behind it. otherwise id just use my PC.

  11. Re:method of digitizing a laser disk on Extracting Digital Video from LaserDiscs? · · Score: 1

Whilst every disk drive ultimately stores the data as analogue signals, which have to be decoded back to digital, they are designed to do so. but in this case, even if you undertook the fairly significant work of digitising the signal, it would still essentially be analogue to digital conversion, and prone to losses and errors. so even if it were feasible (I havent worried about that bit) it would not necessarily be better, imho.

  12. Re:Liquids do not destroy Electronics! on Abused, But Working Hardware Stories? · · Score: 1

    Well, I sort of depends.....

If the liquid is a (non corrosive) electrolyte, then it will conduct electricity. In a low voltage system this may just mean some signals get mixed up. but if those signals put some chips vlsi or custome chips into an "illegal" state, then they may well fry. specially if they are controlling a DAC (digital to analogue converter).

some computer motherboards with switching regulators might get into problems.

Over 12V and the liquid probably will begin to electrolyse, giving off gas and possibly corroding the metals, so a definitely good time to switch off.

of course, distilled water is fine.....
