wow, you are a brave man to even appear to explain socialism in a vaguely positive way on slashdot. But it seemed like a good summary of the current situation to me. The only real problem I have with socialism is the tendency of state run stuff to be really crap. since it is effectively a monopoly. That said, in uk the government sold of all the state run stuff to the private sector, now we effectively have a privately run monopoly, which of course, if really crap. but at least the money is now going to the shareholders, and not the smelly, undeserving plebs who actually pay for the service, eh?

I dunno about clearly being alive back then, but I was there. I played ZX81 adventure games with deep joy. The race to the bottom that I alluded to is not of open source,
but rather proprietary companies, trying to appeal to the largest number of people, as quickly as possible. I realise the following example is not directly appropriate,
but it does illustrate my concerns. (no, it not a car analogy). I bought Gears of war 2 without demoing, cos it sounded great. I played thru on hard in 4 hours or so. I am
a crap player. What has happened? I speak to youngsters who love the game, and they played through even quicker. Clearly (did you see what i just did there?;) the developers did
not want to take the risk of frustrating the players for even a minute. I still have not completed Time Splitters (PS2) on hard, but rate it as an all time great. But I dont see this happening in the future. who would dare baulk the hyperactive nil deferal of pleasure generation with anything as difficult as a real challenge?

Well. it is more draconian than american law, not underpinned by a constitution as such, but usually interpreted by a
non political group of Judges so that in general it works. recent right wing hastily passed laws on anti terrorism and new fangled computer thingies
not withstanding.
I am always bailing out my windows intstall using linux. come to think of it, I would probably use linux full time if only linux didnt keep helping me fix windows.

Ok, I've had a few beers, and I remembered Alien, Aliens, Terminator, and the Bourne trilogy. but still, 99% of (admittedly american) films suck very hard indeed. surely nobody wants to store all that crap?

Star Wars, Bladerunner, Lord of the rings, Matrix, couple of kung fu films, Negotiater, Pulp fiction, say another 10 that I only remember when i'm pissed. that leaves about 63 Terabytes empty.
Is the current economic downturn responsible for organised crimes' inability to make a profit without being subsidised by "piracy". I hear that drugs are equally unprofitable these day. what would they do without copyright infringement, eh?
