Funny..will they talk about about running applications from a browser window...and will they then tout pay-per-services through a web-based subscription model? And yes, why use Microsoft, when a thin OS client is all that will be needed when Netscape...oops...Mozilla runs everything from a browser.
Gee, I bet they'll next try to sell me on Savings & Loans created funds to house all my Dot.com gains!
500? Hmm...for another $200 you can get last year's lower end Thinkpad, if you just look for the deals.
While the OLPC did not hit the $100 mark they set for themselves, it did show the bigger companies where the last big group purchasers were hiding. And now these groups are throwing development resources into attaining the last dregs of large untapped group buys.
So now, what lies ahead for the consumer? Well, how do you want your data? For the morning commute, something ultraportable and more reading than interaction? For work hours, something more for a multitasking environment with less eye strain? For the home, something networked to give you everything - music, TV, teh Intarweb, and boobies?
What I've just described seems to be a system that snaps into or detaches from larger frameworks and nows what content to deliver based upon that framwork.
[lightbulb=!]
Excuse me while I go kick a couple of patent trolls awake.
You are new to life in general, aren't ya? Didn't anyone tell you that humanity, as a collective, is a lazy and sheep-like group? The autonomous consumer telco is the urban fantasy that is right up there with growing your own vegetables, weaving/sewing your own clothes, and "living off the grid."
Sure, there are examples of people doing just that, but how many others are there that simply want to live without the "hassle" of being self sufficient.
A no or low cost Autonomous consumer owned telecommunication infrastructure is what will evolve out of this. No more cable, internet, or cell phone bills.
If we are speaking of clarifications...then it must be admitted that Trent is not using this as a marketing gimmick but is really just trying to get anyone to listen to his stuff
I dunno...my girlfriend has religious paraphenalia that needs electricity. I know because when I am in another room, I can hear a buzzing sound in the bedroom and her chanting, "oh, god. oh, god! ohhhhh, gooood!"
The real question is, since when does your religious paraphernalia need to be be plugged into the wall?
We all know that colorblind people can see colors correctly underwater while those who have correct vision cannot.
First scuba: "Hey dude! I found the cables!"
Second scuba: "Cool. Now cut the red one. No, not that one, the other one. No not this one!"
First scuba: "Hey man! Sorry, I'm colorblind.."
Second scuba: "Sh.t! That's 2 dude. We were simply supposed to cut the good one... Now gimme those scissors. There you go."
As a programmer, I'm most excited by the possibility of a new platform and the programming jobs that will be created by it.
As a regular guy, I am NOT excited by the thought of thousands of fat, greasy programmers drooling over a test tube and a well worn copy of "Weird Science."
As my friend Han was so fond of saying, "I've got a bad feeling about this."
Being a lone gunman or independent worker gets you noticed as the guy who fixes things. And as such, you will always be pigeon-holed into being that guy.
When you start managing the people who fix things, you become that guy who knows people who know how to get things fixed. You begin to be asked for more advice as a strategic advisor and not the tactical fix-it in depth analysis. You move up the ladder many times dependent upon your group of people and how well they get things done as well as managing these same people. (do they do things without gripping or leaving? do they support you? do they keep quiet about asking for more money?)
Once you start managing the meat effectively, you begin that slow steady climb to higher positions. And once you arrive at a certain level, networking not only saves your ass , but it also helps you to climb higher.
Being that tech who does great things only keeps you forever in that position.
I call bullshit on this one. As everyone who knows me or has read what I post on the Internet, they can all say I am in nobody's camp except of my own f-cking ego. I have challenged Wayan and even Negroponte on their opinions about the OLPC. If anything I find them to be naive as well as a little miopic to what the OLPC can do...hardly a shill for Intel.
But to respond to the point of the poster above me, the reverse is true too. How many times will one of us be slandered or ridiculed because of an idiot posting something incredibly wrong or slanderous about us but that people cannot help but add to the confusion by automatically believing that if it is on teh Intarweb, it must be true.
It has never been a question of Hi-Def (or even DVD for that matter) for parents when buying these electronic babysitters. The recent explosion has been the idea of portability of hardware. If I can keep my sister's kids quiet with a little 8" screen of Disney, veggie tales, Dora, etc. that's what I want. That includes the little portable DVD player, the built screens in a car, whatever that plays the crap they want to watch with as little headache and cost to me. They drag that sucker away from own TV, go wherever they want and leave me the hell alone.
It is a little disingenuous for the parents to claim they are buying HD or Blueray for the kids. After all it is these same people who buy the SUV for "safety." C'mon people! Is your penis really so small that you need to make up for that inadequacy?

"The domain name you have requested is registered with Network Solutions"
However, Network Solutions says this name is still available. So...there must be a bot that puts a hold tag on the name for Network Solutions within ICANN for someone to register this particular name with and only with Network Solutions. So looking at the one example above, I guess the next step in the bot is to soldify their holding of the name (keep it for the company to now sell) if no one registers it within a period of time after the inital query.
I always thought it was called either "culling the herd" or "being a Darwin Award recipient".

Certainly won't be any fire brandishing townsfolk come after it and make it go beserk, because you know...fire bad!

Duh!
Sigh...more fairy tales from teh Intarweb...
We all know that colorblind people can see colors correctly underwater while those who have correct vision cannot.
Ha, ha! Billy is a frozen sperm baby and now he's going to Hell...
Does the Pope not want anyone in his Church except 115 old guys who hate women and love little boys?
Are those real?
Hardly

Wait...was that the OP I saw crying? Yeesh, I hate emotional postings...and dammit, who asked Dr. Phil to come in here?
Good lord, what if the autobot is localized? I mean, how much worse would the driving be if it was a BostonBot(tm)?

At 4:18 EDT (US) I searched for "networksolutionswhore.com" and is available...
How long does it take for it to autoregister?
a beta version hitting the Intarweb tubes soon...
But...think about the hookers and strippers! Who's going to pay for their services now?
Thank you very much, Mr. Kinder-Gentler 2nd Fake Steve Jobs!
