  1. Re:Why should laws be changed? on Decriminalizing File Swapping · · Score: 1

Nope. Under the US common-law system, legislation is *supposed* to happen from the bench. Laws are only made where they're necessary, precedent and tradition are more important. Go try and find the stature that makes murder a crime. You won't, because it doesn't exist. It's there solely under the enormous weight of precedent. What defines what is and isn't murder isn't the stature books, it's the precedents, and when a situation without a precedent comes up, it's the judge's *job* to make one. To make the law.

We don't have a separate constitution. But we do have constitutional rights through various acts, common law, and Europe. The right to a competent speedy hearing to decide if your arrest is lawful, and proper defense and trial if it is, does exist in Britain, you just have to dig a bit deeper. It would be nice to have a single document we could point to, but we get by.

Dvorak doesn't make you faster. The keys are much better placed in relation to the home keys, but this is equalled by the disadvantage from common pairs not alternating around the keyboard. Someone needs to come up with a new layout combining both these advantages.

I think it's because flash doesn't need to spin to the right place, but is slower overall reading. So it can start the read faster, but the maximum throughput is lower than a HD.

The line gets blurred, but there's still a need to separate "data we need to keep" and "data we're using right now". You could use the same chips for both, but you probably wouldn't because if you need them logically separate anyway you could probably get chips optimised for memory or long term storage. A different way of doing programs could let you merge HD and memory, but it would take a real shift before we didn't need two logically separate stores, even if they're actually the same hardware.
