The only STV episode I can remember is the one where she got possessed by a dying alien. She was hot in black and dominated minions. Sign me up for Kes' Army.
I see that you have a USB problem. What operating systems are you running? Do you have the latest patches? I'm sorry, we don't support that version you'll have to install something else, don't forget to fdisk all your storage as well. Thank you for calling TECH-Support.
I see that you're running lastest o/s. And have a USB questions. You should reinstall everything and call back. Thank you for calling TECH-Support.
I see that you're running latest o/s v2 and have already reinstalled. Please remove the power supply from the CPU case. Only authorized users should be allowed to install a power supply. This will solve your USB question. Thank you for calling TECH-Support
I see that you're running latest o/s v2 and have already reinstalled. Removing the power supply is not an option. You don't have the latest releast, you'll need to upgrade. Thank you for calling TECH-Support
I see that you're running latest o/s v2 and have already reinstalled. Removing the power supply is not an option. You can disable the USB ports by, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me. I see you need the USB port for authorized users. Another option is to solder the authorized device to the USB port. Thank you for calling TECH-Support.
I see your system has shorted out, started a fire. Your unauthorized tampering has voided your support contract. Thank you for calling TECH-Support.
I walked into our server room after lunch one day. Raised floor from the IBM system that got scrapped years ago, a/c and generally nicely laid out. The a/c drain had backed up and one of our help desk guys was standing in the puddle with a mop and 220 power cables. I had to shout at this guy to drop everything and get away. After a modestly quick shutdown and power shutoff at the breaker panel we started to dry things out. I still don't believe that someone would stand on power cables to mop up a spill. Definate Darwin candidate here.
This guy was a sleazy tomcat'ing sort too. No way was I going to risk CPR with that clown.
The first 6 versions were lame. The 7th was fair. V8 works reasonably well. My wife tried an earlier release with much annoyance. V8 makes her happy. She got an upgrade offer which we took advantage of.
It will also read text-to-speech and support voice control (not sure how well this works). Text to speech requires you open a file in something that allows it to be edited, MSWord, notepad, Dragon's own editor. If it supported a browser it would be a big improvment.
If you go with this, check supported sound cards and microphones on Scansoft's web site. I bought my wife a 6 Dragon USB microphone. Mics are rated 1-6 Dragons and are a key component. There's support for the major sound card chipset, the on board Intel seems behaves.
McCoy was an established MD in private practice. After his divorce, he got away from everything by joining Star Fleet. His one daughter is the one thing he misses.
In other words the wife cleaned him out and he ran off planet.
VMS, it wasn't the best operating system in it's time
VMS is still around and going strong. If you need a reliable system, it's still one of the best options out there. Intel runs its production lines with VMS systems, when a "quick reboot" costs you millions in trashed product VMS becomes very affordable. If you need multi site disaster tolerance (not recovery, not fail over but uninterrupted transparent service) VMS is your answer. It outlasted 2 companies (Digital and Compaq) that tried to kill it, and may be around after people remember HP as that company that pretty good calculators and printers for a while.
Apache, Perl, Python and Samba are available for Open VMS, the VAX will boot BSD and the Alpha Linux. Pipe is there too, along with Emacs.
The Intel architecture may not generate the business, but the o/s is near platform independent. I'd like to see IBM take over VMS and port to Power. VMS quality design and IBM marketing.
See the VMS Software Product Description (SPD) available at from HP Fair sized PDF, scroll down to page 25 or so for a list of supported systems. Disk and tape devices on the pages following.
As a general rule, for older systems, you need SCSI disk and CD, something that supports the full SCSI standard. You a PWS "u" is the same as a PWS with a SCSI controller/disk. Check google groups (comp.os.vms) for advice on these upgrades. Some of the newer Alphas understand IDE now.
The neat thing about OpenVMS and Alpha is that in the rare case when a system does crash you can log a call and HP will have someone do a byte by byte crawl through the crash dump and tell you what happened. If it's an o/s problem, VMS Engineering will fix it. If it's a hardware problem, you get an error log with useful diagnostic information.
My big cluster has 3 downtime incidents in the last 6 years, 2 operating system upgrades and frozen fuel line in the generator during an extended power outage. Individual systems have gone down, but never all at once.
I WILL shoot first, and ask questions later, and I will be completely within my rights to do so.
That depends on local law. Last time I looked Virginia and Texas were the only states that allowed use of deadly force to protect your property. The state where I live now requires that I be in fear for my life before being using deadly force legally. Some states require I be in fear for my life and had no option to escape. These things change. Consult a local legal practitioner.
Shooting up the bad guys is like plugging in your broadband Windows XP system with only the quickstart guide from your ISP. You can do it, but it can lead to problems down the line. Before you shoot someone, take the time to learn what gives you the legal right to fire.
What abilities will be needed on the horizon that I can get an early start on learning today?"
You'll also need a work visa to be hired in India. A taste for curry is also helpful.

Baen Books has free titles in multiple formats. Baen has also published 6 hardcovers with CD-rom verions of chock full of words. No DRM, No restrictions, Free to distribute. The label states the publisher hopes you get tired of reading the screen and go out and buy hard copy and other works by the same author. The first hit is free. It seems to be working, Baen is reprinting older hardbacks and some titles are always shelved.
My read of choice is a Rocket e-book. Baen supports the formats, there's enough out of copywrite stuff out there to keep me satisfied.
Code Generation and other one shot down, dirty, fast and ugly projects. The last database conversion I was tasked with at my old company, I used Access/VB to track specs, create customer reports and define the job. Drove the project manager crazy, he kept asking how many lines of code have you written as if that had any bearing on the project. After wasting a month talking to the customer, I came in on a Friday, slapped some VB around the database and generated just over 17,000 lines of code. Then I wrote a few hundred lines to push data, ftp'd the whole thing to a real system and went to lunch. Project closed 1 week early, customer knew exactly what I was doing, no cleanup.
Access works for one shots. It's the PHB that wants a multi user ERP, customer management, HR application, inventory ordering and work flow management form that gives it a bad name.
I've been waiting for a 2 line 5.8 phone for almost a year, making due with a 900 mhz single line phone for the time being. With a home office, 2 phone lines and 802.11b the 2.4 ghz phones were out. Finally in stock is the Uniden TRU8866. Best deal on phone & handsets was Frys.
Do what Celera Genomics did for their equipment bids for human genome computing resources. Develop a benchmark test run representing sample code and data. Have each vendor run your benchmark in time trials.
"People asked me why we chose Compaq," says Marshall Peterson, Celera's vice president of infrastructure technology. "The answer is simple. We took a benchmark and gave it to all the vendors. Only two could run it. One ran it in 87 hours.
Compaq ran it in seven." Peterson didn't disclose the name of the other vendor.

Does that open the door to virus EULA and copywrite issues? Other than Microsoft what other virus vendors are out there?

How do fix a problem in firmware that's going to dump the data from the Huygens probe? Boris Smeds, uber geek 2005 knows how.

Disable the TCP/IP stack. This simple step elimantes many virus/worm IE and Outlook problems.
Images are either scanned or burned to CD-Rom. We do not allow TCP-IP networking on a PC that connects to a server.
