  1. There is a joke... on BitTorrent Inherently Illegal? · · Score: 2, Interesting

That a man caugth his wife cheating him with his best friend on the sofa. What he did? He trow away the sofa.

And that is what most IT departments do... It doesnt matter what kind of protocol you use to share your data. If there people out there that want to share, they'll find a way to do so.

What if some one devellop a p2p software based on HTTP? Should we block it too? There is Peer2Mail, lets ban SMTP, POP and IMAP altogheter!! Better yet, lets get rid of TCP/IP as it is cleary the foundation of those evil sharing technologies.

How about add value to your products, so people will actually want to buy them? Do you think people are stopping to buy CDs because piracy, or online sharing?!? No, its because the lack of quality, and the abusive pricing!! No one will buy for an entire CD when they just want one song or two...

  2. Re:Why is so hard to drop MSOfifce? on Microsoft Partially Opens Proprietary XML Format · · Score: 5, Interesting

We just use wordview to convert from DOC to HTML, then pipe the output to htmldoc. The conversion is FAR from perfect. But thats the point... to get perfect documents the user must use OpenOffice, or zip the file.

  3. Why is so hard to drop MSOfifce? on Microsoft Partially Opens Proprietary XML Format · · Score: 5, Interesting

I work for the municipal healthcare dep. at Rio de Janeiro City. Here at Brasil the federal gov. has stabilished a deadline to change most software to opensource or free equivalents by 2007.

So, we started by enforcing the use of OpenOffice in every desktop. The process is simple, if someone want that old 450MHz Duron replaced by a new 2GHz Athlon they must use OpenOffice instead of MSOffice. Its amazing how this argument work!

Mind you that we don't forbid the installation of MSOffice on this new machines. No sir, anyone can BUY and DONATE the licente to the city, so the software can be installed legaly on the computer. Heh, imagine how often it happens!

The next step was to replace Lotus Notes (argh!) with PostFix + Cyrus running on Debian, and installing ThunderBird on every desktop. Most users just loved the change, because the Lotus Notes Client realy suck.

To add an nice touch, every DOC file that pass trough the email system is converted into a PDF, for tha sake of virus-prevention... The only way to pass an editable document thought is to use OpenOffice native format!

One day, I dream of substitute all W2k desktops with Ubuntu Hoary... and tell its just a new version of WindowsXP. With most of the users already using OpenOffice, ThunderBird and Firefox I gess none of the users will notice the change! ;-)

  4. We'll see a QT based Photoshop soon?!? on Adobe Reader 7.0 Coming to Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

    See,

QT is a great multi-plataform toolkit... it can render beautifully under Windows or MacOSX, witch are the main target plattaforms for Adobe.

It would make a lot of sense to Adobe port their core applications to a toolkit that can compile on all their target plattaforms, plus Linux!

Hey, its happening!! We already have Acrobat Reader and PhotoShop Album made using QT.

Plus, if Adobe could be untied from both Windows and MacOSX, their products would become a LOT more acessible... A dedicated Linux box running Photoshop + Illustrator would be a great solution for a lot of graphic houses out there!

Now, if the XOrg guys could fix the XImput system, so my Wacom tablet would get configured automagicaly via hotplug without having to manualy edit the config files... wow, that would be perfect!!

  5. Re:Space beyond the edge of Universe on Fermilab Reports Dark Energy Not Needed · · Score: 0, Redundant

The limmit is probably caused by the speed of light, We can only "see" something if the energy it irradiates arrive at Earth.

So, if a new star is born now at 5 light years from here, we'll see it only 5 years later when its light hit Earth.

Then, if the universe is T years old, and is expanding at the speed of light, we could only see what is T light years from here.

Of course its just an opinion, since i really suck at phisics.

  6. Better invest on user education... on Symantec: Mac OS X Becoming a Malware Target · · Score: 1

MacOSX has one merit over Windows... it has an intuitive interface, yet it doesnt treat the users as a complete idiots.

Windows is always trying to avoid any effort of the user to think for herself... seriously, look at the default search interface on XP, then look at MacOSX!

Windows sell the illusion that anyone can use a computer without any effort. It is always trying to avoid the user from understanding what is really going on... Dont belive me? Why does it keep the root directory and "Program Files" hidden by default, while on MacOSX the equivalent are there to see?

While intuitive, MacOSX actualy demands some insight from the user. Windows, on the other hand takes all the responsability from the user, and treat them as 3yrs old children... Dont you ever suspected of that Windows "teletubie" look?

Which users will be easier to fool? Witch system will demand more "protection"? And are you realy protecting the system from virii and such, or are we trying to protect the system from the user?

PS: By the way, Symantec products suck... Amavis + ClamAV + SpamAssassin beats their products any day, with one hand tied to their backs!

  7. We should patent the process not the idea... on Amazon Pursues Plogging Patent · · Score: 3, Interesting
This way, for exemple, one should be alowed to patent the code to achieve certain functionality... but not the functionality itself.

I think its more fair... Medicines for one, a Lab should be able to patent a process to achieve certain compound. But not be able to patent the compound formula... if some poor country find a way to produce the medicine, the Lab would not be alowed to charge for royalities... unless they're using the patented process to make the medicines.

Take a look at the HIV case here at Brasil, the governament tried to produce generic medicines, to distribute among the population for FREE, but the Labs couldnt allow that, and sued the governament. When the Labs were about to LOOSE the case, they lowered the price of the meds to a fraction of the original cost, so would be cheaper for the governament to buy the meds, instead of produce them!!!

What I mean is, patents doesnt suck. What is wrong is the way theyre used nowdays.
