  1. Re:Poor Bill on Bill Gates Gives $20M to CMU for New Building · · Score: 2, Insightful

Put things in perspective. Considering his net worth it's like comparing a person worth 30 grand giving $10 to charity. The charity wouldn't be likely to name a building after you and trust me you'd miss the ten dollars more than Gates will miss the twenty mill. Before his recent Philanthropy he gave away the smallest percentage of his income of any of the top one hundred. It was only after this was pointed out to him that he saw the light. It's more PR than charity.

Hate to break it to you but the government probably knew in a matter of minutes they just don't pass such information to average americans. It'll come out eventually but only when they want it to and when it can be spun to help Bush's reelection bid. Not much chance we'll invade. No oil. If they strike oil they're screwed. Right now they are a hornet's nest. If we attack we get stung but we get no honey/oil. Better to attack a bee's nest. At least you get the honey/oil for your troubles.

  3. Re:The reason I can't watch blade runner any more on Blade Runner Is The Best Sci-Fi Film · · Score: 0

As in the world today the corporations set the rules. Remember the quote "It's about commerce, More human than human." They wanted them to be as human as possible. It's why Nexis 6s weren't allowed on earth to avoid any risk. It was a major story point that they were strictly offworld. A purple replicant would have been defeating the purpose. In that case why make them human at all? The whole point was to make them an acceptable part of society. It's likely that the company's eventual plan was to get the Nexis 6s approved for use on earth. A group of rogue replicants would endanger that plan making it critical to quietly eliminate them. If you know the back story or have seen the director's cut you know Harrison Ford's character was a replicant. He was most likely created to look out for the company's interests. It's why he was chosen to go after the rogues.

  4. Viral Heaven on Microsoft Renovates Office Suite as a Web Service · · Score: 0, Redundant

Is it just me or is this a virus writers wet dream? Wouldn't a virus infecting the Microsoft server be downloaded onto every machine using the service? I'm sure they'll claim airtight security, that would be a first, but it feels a potentially great way around a firewall.

  6. Not real impressed on Turn Real Life Into A Cartoon · · Score: 0

The results are kind of colorful blobs. I've seen it done much better with other software and several years back. Kind of classic Microsoft. We did it last and not half as good but we were still first and the best. Who needs facts when you have spin!

  7. Most writers don't seem to touch type on Is Typing a Necessary Skill? · · Score: 0

I'm a writer and although I learned to touch type I tend to type with just my index and middle fingers. Most writers I know do the same thing. It's too hard to focas on what you are writing and typing at the same time. I think it's a good skill to learn but it's not critical for most computer work. It's still critical for some office jobs. Typists who can do around 200 wpm are still in big demand.

  8. Re:JibJab Will Lose on JibJab Sues for Fair Use of Right to Parody · · Score: 0

Woody Guthrie's family doesn't own the rights and I have serious doubts that Arlo Guthrie, his son, would object. He is a known polictical activist and would appreciate the humor. Most artists aren't allowed to own their own work. Music corporations own virtually all popular music. Only a tiny handful of top artist have amintained any ownership and most of those formed their own labels. Don't blame a politically liberal family like the Guthries. They are the good guys.

  9. Re:Well on JibJab Sues for Fair Use of Right to Parody · · Score: 0, Redundant

Political satire in free societies has been protected since Roman times. As to the song being satire and not a parody I tend to disagree. The main purpose is to make fun of the cannidates but a secondary effort is to make fun of a corny song. It would in a sense fall under both. It will in effect be up to a judge. I think there would be more issues if they were selling the video. Weird Al has made a career off similar work. I'm sure he'll be watching closely. I do agree with the other poster that I'd feel a little differently if Woody Guffery, deceased, or his family were offended. My guess is Arlo Guthrie has watch it a few dozen times and is a big fan. Love to see him come out in support.

  11. Depends on your budget but a good camera on Which Digital Video Camera for Amateur Video? · · Score: 1

A good camera is the Panasonic AG-DVX100A. I shot a feature on it last year. It's a 3CCD miniDV. The quality was excellent for a 3 grand camera. One big benefit is it has dual XLR plugs. If you are into sound you really should go for a camera with XLRs. The standard mini plugs can get a lot of interference. The XLRs are a lot cleaner. Most prosumer cameras only have mini plugs. The Canon XL-1 had an add-on shoulder pad with XLR connectors. If you go to an editing system that handles 24P, Premiere or Final Cut, I strongly recommend it. The look is a lot closer to film. Good luck with the short.
