Considering that Alberta has been ahead of most provinces in cutting health care services, and is the first to lead towards a two-tiered health care system, maybe the $300 million would be better spent on health care. Just like the $500 million Ontario is spending on cleaning up the mess the Toronto people made of the Toronto waterfront, just IN CASE they hold the Olympics in 2008, would also have been better spent on health care. It seems that these two provinces have their priorities reversed.
Duh. No, it does not automatically go to the shareholders. A C-corporation (public companies all fall into that category) has to give dividends for shareholders to make money, and some companies do not. Those that do give out dividends do not usually give out everything they make in dividends. In fact, they usually only give a very small amount of their profit out in dividends. The rest goes into their bank account or other interest-making accounts and becomes assets on the balance sheet.
Now, someone here said Microsoft and Cisco do not pay dividends to their shareholders. If that is the case, then no one is paying taxes on the corporate income. And even if Microsoft was paying dividends, Microsoft made the money. They should pay the taxes. We're talking about a very damned large company that could buy most countries that doesn't pay a cent to the U.S. government. And the shareholders do not either. Talk about the taxpayers being ripped off. Meanwhile, while this giant faceless entity is making tons of money and not paying taxes, people who live under the poverty line still have to.
It's time to end corporate-welfare. Stop giving money to corporations. Stop paying out more welfare to corporations than to individuals who actually need it. And, stop creating huge loopholes that allow giant filthy rich corporations to get away without taxation.
Americans, vote Nader. Canadians, vote Green in the next election.
Corporations should not be people. A person is a human being.
Also... whats' the keyboard shortcut to traverse through the different virtual windows..ie: ctr tab does it in kde... what's the gnome sequence.
The keyboard sequence to traverse through different virtual desktops is handled by the window manager, which in KDE's case is KWM. So if you're using GNOME, which has no official window manager, you need to configure that in your wm, whether it's E, Sawmill, etc. It's all handled there.
What I would like to see are real useful keyboard bindings (ie. use the "Windows" key or Ctrl-Esc to bring up the Gnome menu), then use my arrow keys to navigate through them. Also, a lot of GNOME apps don't seem to have keyboard bindings for the menus. If I want to quit, I just want to use Alt-F, X. I want to use tab to switch between tabs! No screwing with the mouse any more than necessary. KDE developers do tend to get that part right at least. You seldom see QT/KDE apps without keyboard bindings, but with GTK/GNOME apps, it seems to be the norm. Real pain.
I should note that I'm a GNOME user despite that little downfall.
I think there are a number of things you have to keep in mind before you jump to the conclusion that France is being fascist for making such a demand.
1. I know you Americans value free speech above everything in all cases, but that is not necessarily how other countries see it. Many countries have anti-hate laws. Those laws exist for a very good reason. Hate speech most often promotes murder, assaults, cross-burning, etc, of minorities. It makes those minorities feel intimidated and frightened. Many countries see the consequences of some speech as far outweighing any "rights" that someone may have to make that speech. Free speech is not an inalieable right. Remember that even in the U.S., it's illegal to shout "fire" in a crowded theater.
2. There are cultural differences here. The French are not Americans, and you should respect their opinions too.
2. France is especially sensitive about Nazi-symbols given the history there, and I think it's understandable. Keep in mind that France was occupied by Nazi germany for years, and that their citizens were made oppressed and helpless by the Nazis. If the Nazis occupied your country, killed your countrymen, killed and opressed you and your family, would you believe that people should have a right to carry Nazi and neo-Nazi symbols? Even if you're a so called Libertarian, can you be 100% sure how you'd feel after living through that?
3. There is little practical reason to own a swastika or other Nazi or neo-Nazi symbol. Chances are about 99.99999999% that if you own such a symbol, you're a hate-mongering, jew/black/gay beating fascism-loving jerk.
I just want to keep this in perspective, and say that this is not a case of outright no-good censorship like when the government wants to take away your right to read "indecent" materials. To many, hate speech is just as dangerous as yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre.
I guess you didn't figure it out yet, but the entire Cold War was one big pissing match. It was about both powers trying to assert their dominance over the other. Both had systems that the other didn't like, and both were trying to keep other countries on their side. Make no mistake, the communists were not the only ones looking to establish "satelite" nations.
The U.S. didn't like the communists because they threatened their economic and therefore political control over other countries. It had nothing to do with totalitarianism. It had to do with the fact that once a country became communist, the U.S. could not longer control that country. The big U.S.-based corporations were forced out of that country, their land nationalized, and all their investments forced out. The U.S. established political control over these countries by establishing favourable fascist dictatorships which allowed U.S. companies free reign. Usually this was (and probably still is) done through paramilitary and covert CIA operations. Once a country was taken over by the communists, the U.S. lost that control. So you can see why communism had to be stopped at all costs. It threatened U.S. control over most of the world.
On the Soviet side, they had grandiose plans to "spread" their misguided idealogy all over the world. They didn't care how it was done -- in fact, that was the whole point to Stalinism: communism through any means. Certainly not what Marx intended (and I'm not saying that pure Marxism would ever work either), but it is what Stalin and his successors tried nevertheless. The communists are to blame for the current economic crisis in Russia because they were trying to keep up with the U.S. in terms of arms production, even with a much smaller economy, essentially leaving the country bankrupt now with the sudden change to capitalism. The U.S.S.R. had to spread communism to gain power and control over other countries, exactly what the U.S. also wanted, but they did it through overt military operations instead, keeping their countries as totalitarian states, torturing and killing millions of their own people and devastating their economy.
In other words, the Cold War was a waste of time, a power struggle over control of the world. The U.S.S.R., with a much smaller economy and less control over the world, just could not win against the U.S. superpower. The Cold War has left us with a U.S. intelligence community completely out of control, huge power over the U.S. from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, huge defense contractor corporations, an economy based on war, chronically lying Presidents (of course, that was probably there before the Cold War too, but I'm guessing much worse now), undisposable nuclear weapons and nuclear waste that serves no purpose, and economic and political devastation in the former Soviet Union. All over a "pissing match". I must say, good job to both the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. You have managed to fuck up the world a hell of a lot more.
Does anyone know of a registrar that allows you to complete the transfer process online, or even partially online? All of the registrars listed on the Domain name Buyers Guide seem to require a tedious paperwork-based transfer. Register.com, for example, even requires that you send them a NOTARIZED copy of your driver's license.
It shouldn't be so hard to transfer away from NSI. With policies like that, no wonder they still think they can do anything they want.
Don't bother arguing with him. He's a libertarian. And libertarians are not only dumb and unpractical, they're ignorant and jerks.
"Hi, I'm a libertarian! I'm so stupid that I believe that greedy corporate bastards can fix the entire world. The government should play no or little role in the economy and our private lives other than things like law enforcement! And that's good, because if you follow my suggestions, we'll need a lot of law enforcement. Unfortunately, all those cops won't mean anything because they'll be bribed by rich people and corporations to run the country as they wish. I think greedy corporate suits should run the whole country! HAVEN'T YOU EVER HEARD OF TRICKLE-DOWN ECONOMICS, YOU COMMIE?! They work! Just look at the fact that corporations are making more money than ever, the stock market is at record levels, and the number of people living under the poverty line, especially in urban areas, is still the same. Oops, I conveniently forgot that fact. Look at the fact that personal debt is going down and the income gap is actually becoming lower. Wait, I just checked and that's not true. Personal debt is going way up and the income gap keeps widening and widening and widening. Anyways, who cares, it's doesn't matter. I'm a rich greedy asshole and I don't want to pay my taxes, so we need libertarianism! We really should make the United States more like Hong Kong capitalism. Who cares if an excess of capitalism and a lack of government oversight leads to economically-based assasinations, organized crime, and large corporations running the entire country. We'd be free from the government, dammit! And that's what we all want! The opportunity not to pay our taxes because we're all a bunch of cheapskates and don't care for helping our fellow man through things like healthcare programs and free education. Who cares if large international conglomerates run the country? It's better than the government running it! Capitalism is the answer to everything! Greed helps make society better! Hail Ayn Rand, our god!
Thank you for listening to my rant you commie bastard. Now go back to Russia."

Will it work under the KDE support for Enlightenment or will I have to switch to KWM to use Konqueror?
Web Browsing - Gotta Switch to KWM Other Stuff (Email, IRC, etc) - Gotta switch back to E ???
No thanks. No matter how good the web browser is, if it's going to require me running the KDE window manager in order to use it, I simply WON'T use it unless KDE2 is an incredibly substantial leap forward to make it better than E or Sawmill.
Just more evidence that the Gnome and KDE teams need to SOMEHOW merge their efforts.
I'm sick of Gnome/KDE specific apps. If they just use GTK or QT, fine, but apps that use the Gnome or KDE extensions, that really pisses me off.

It's more likely that the LinDVD people just e-mailed some "quotes" to Linus, and he approved them. Usually what happens in these press releases is that the person being quoted doesn't even write the quote, let alone say it. They simply approve what was written by the PR person.
You'd be surprised. I'm going to get flamed for this, but I'm using Windows 2000, and it's actually very stable. It surprised me! I'm not one that usually likes Microsoft products, but W2K actually seems like decent software. It supports all my hardware, including my USB gamepad, and almost all of my existing software runs on it. The only thing that wouldn't run was some Berlitz French learning program by TLC (Mattel), which I shouldn't have bought anyways.:-)
They DID have the right to issue it at the time, though.
Here was the series of events.
- Code Belongs to Matthew Skala and his friend. - They release the code under the GPL, thereby licensing it to you and I. They also give me distribution and other rights. This is considered a contract. - Mattel purchases copyright to the code - Doesn't matter, I still own a license to the code, including the right of distribution.
Mattel cannot take away my license to distribute/modify/use/whatever the code, because the contract is already made.
Of course, we expect CSIS to make stupid mistakes. After all, they aren't a real intelligence agency anyways. All they ever do is whine "oh no, not more immigrants! Immigrants are bad! They're all terrorists!". The CSE (Communciations Security Establishment -- Canada's equivalent of the NSA) is more a spy agency than CSIS.
But MI5 is supposed to be full of a bunch of James Bond-like smart and handsome people, right?
Another possible reason for the name change is because it sounds so similar to VMWare. To avoid legal problems in the future, they changed the name.
I should also mention that FreeMWare/plex86 is not a hardware emulator. It allows you to virtualize the x86 chip through software to run multiple operating systems on one CPU, even though the x86 architecture has no hardware virtualization. This is similar to what you can do on mainframes like the IBM S/390, although on a much smaller scale (I doubt anyone could run over 4,000 instances of Linux on an x86 chip).
It's actually explained right on their web site. "The goal of the FreeMWare project is to create an extensible open source PC virtualization software program which will allow PC and workstation users to run multiple operating systems concurrently on the same machine".
If you want hardware emulation, check out Bochs, which was written by one of the founding authors of FreeMWare/plex86.
This is not a case of the community simply persecuting for no reason. I have to admit to have seen that happen in the past. But such cases typically involve a small vocal minority of Slashdot trolls and other zealots. This is neither a case of corporation-bashing. I've done some large multinational conglomerate bashing myself, but only in cases where it's waranted (eg. Nike using slave labour, corporations trying to control sovereign states through the WTO, etc).
This is a case of abuse. Before the 1-click patent fiasco, geeks were some of the heaviest supporters of Amazon.com. Many of us participated in the affiliate program, as did Slashdot itself. Many of us patronized Amazon by purchasing books and other goods from them.
The fact is, Amazon's patents are clear abuses of the patent system. The entire community, RMS, and now O'Reilly have spoken out again the patent. This is different from a Slashdot troll saying "Borland is shit. If they're going release their compiler for free, they have to GPL it and do the same to their debuggers. Otherwise I'll bomb their offices. Who cares if it's their property to do with as they wish? I WANT MY GPL!"
I live in Canada. We use Metric for everything else, but lots of people still use the English system to measure their weight.

I'm certainly not stupid enough to be so idealistic that I have no room for practicality. Or dumb enough to write the worst text editor ever.

sorry, I noticed it as soon as I posted.
RMS is just a trouble maker. He likes to annoy us all by saying "X is incompatible with GPL. SOUND THE ALARM! IT'S SUCH A TRAJEDY!".

I'm serious, moderation on Slashdot is getting worse and worse. Just because you don't agree with something does NOT MAKE IT A TROLL, DUMBASS.
