The arguement for open source everything is a waste of time. Not EVERYTHING should be open source. Microsoft shouldn't have to release thier source code to any product.
However, when they are going out and suing companies for using linux in thier products as a result of software patents that are vauge to say the least, they should have to prove that there is in fact some sort of infringement.
If I code a program that does task A, and Microsoft has a program that does task A, Microsoft should have to at least show thier hand (at least to a judge) to prove that I actually infringed on thier intellectual property.
The problem with the way software patents are bieng approached is this. If thier program uses Algorithm A to do the task and a competitor uses Algorithm B, Microsoft can still wave this magic piece of paper around that says, Algorithm for doing task A. No matter if a companies code looks nothing like thiers and uses a completley diffrent method, Microsoft can still force me to pay them royalties, or worse, force thier competitors out of business by preventing innovation.
In the end, it's the end user that will suffer. No matter if a great new way of doing something is created, M$ just has to send a lawyer to make sure that we, the users, never get it.
So is keeping thier source code hidden from even the courts in the best interest of M$? Clearly yes. Will it prevent competition and innovation in software? I say yes.
I wonder what Real Networks will do if they can't come up with the $200 million dollars they apparently owe...

Somehow I think this guy has solved a 1,200 year old problem by creating yet another one. If this nullity thing equals 0/0, then what does nullity+nullity equal? How bout nullity^2? So when are we going to solve the problem of doing basic arithmetic on nullity?

So i was sitting there, put my check in the little container, set the container back on the little pedestal, and pressed the button. The container shot up about three feet, before lodging itself securley in the tube, unable to move.
I wonder if something similar happened to the government...except with a pile of slimy green radioactive death-goo, instead of a check.

I'm currently preparing to enroll in the engineering program at Penn State Berks. As an incoming freshman i will take the core engineering courses, and then move into my specilization, either computer science or computer engineering. I am planning on going for my masters.
Basically I am worried about the "outsourceabillity" of computer science and computer engineering. I'd like to hear some opinions of which is a "safer" pick. Frankly I dont want to relocate to India for my first job out of college.
Here in PA we have a system like that for emergency vehicles, late at night if you flash your high beams fast enough you can trigger a green light.
Also i've noticed on the so equipped lights, if you stop before the light, and inch forward bit by bit, you can trip a green light.
So dont we already have this?

I noticed this as well. luckily I purchaced my 2000+ and 2800+ before this hike. I was shocked to see athalons raise in price just as the 64's started rolling. Seems counterproductive. However, they may have decided to raise prices on thier cheaper products for the people like me who say... "Well, its only 20 bucks more..."
Now here, I'm a hardcore AMD user, I have 5 of thier athlon xp's sitting in various forms in my house.
Now what is all this business about having an Athlon 64 that does not have 64 bit capability. I just dont get it. Wouldnt an athlon 64 without 64 bit capability be an athlon XP with a new core and new socket?

Like for instance, when someone at NASA installs a washer backwards, and stuff blows up, wasting billions of dollars and killing several astronauts. Who HASN'T made a mistake in thier life.
With Slashdot, thousands of geeks may feel emasculated by not having anything to say about a said topic, simply because they already said it. So I suppose its akin to wasting billions of dollars and killing people.

The xbox warez community has been working for a long time on cracking the xbox ISO, so that burned games will work on any xbox. I'm wondering right now if the release of this would in any way aid them.
Also note, that I have two copies of halo preordered, so I will be waiting, and I will be found at my local EB at 9 PM EST on november 8th.
There has been talk of the ISO crack project for a long time, I'm just sort of worried that if this occours, the release dates of many many future xbox games will be delayed while MS and developers scramble to secure thier hardware/software.
