now let us mention that Creative, let alone the MPAA, was not precisely helpful in creating drivers, from what I've heard. as soon as I get my motherboard replaced, I'm going to try out those drivers, but last I checked, they were mighty unstable, and they weren't getting any help from Creative on that, even in the form of information. I hope this has changed.

this isn't exactly the only place I'm looking. however, the bay area is chock-full of teams, and while many are well funded (*cough*gunn*cough*), there are simply not enough companies to go around, not to mention many who think we're insane. it's a lot easier for a company to sponsor a proven winner than a team in less-affluent area, with no track record, and the only engineering expertise coming from first and second-year engineering students.

speaking of helping out, a lot of teams need not only money, but real engineering help both in EE, programming, design, and construction. I was a member of the Gunn High School team (GRT -- we won animation a few years ago, seeded 5th two years ago, and made it at least to the semis last year) and now mentor a team from Berkeley High School which is run entirely by high school students and college mentors.

the Berkeley team has exactly 0 engineers helping and exactly $0 besides the entrance fee (which NASA is sponsoring). I know there are other teams in this situation, so if you can't help a team with your time, talk to your company and see if they will sponsor a team with money, tools, or by assigning engineers to work with the team. it's an investment in the future -- I know several very talented engineers who lacked direction until this competiton. many teams lack even the most basic tools, liability insurance (I won't pretend this isn't dangerous: a student from Palo Alto High School got his hand caught in a belt sander last year, and several bay area students almost cut off fingers. another good reason to have trained engineers to teach), and a place to work.

if you'd like to help the Berkeley team, contact me at chialea@uclink.berkeley.edu. I can also put you in contact with a team in your area.

it's very rewarding and exciting work, and the competition is going on right now, so don't delay -- it's 6 weeks of excitement, plus the regional competion, plus the main competiton in Florida, which is braodcast on ESPN2. so, please, sponsor a team.

there are tons of cool technologies being worked on here, even though many of them will probably not be brought to market in the next decade, and probably not by Xerox. there are quite a few patents awarded to engineers here. in fact, there are a few spinoffs to PARC which are right next door, which certainly have valid patents.

most new technologies that Xerox is coming out with come out of here, and there are more coming out soon. not my particular project, but there are lots of very cool things around which are more developed, as well as things which could be very, very useful in about a decade or so.

my (rambling) point being that these things are oohed and ahhed over as toys, even though they're work-related. perhaps that makes them seem useless to others. (of course, "they" always have things like beanie babies and pokemon) where does that put us? well, unless you see something that particularly catches your interest (for me it was programming and taking things apart, NOT games) you're likely to dismiss it.

then you get into what people are likely to see and enjoy. mostly people see games. most games are not exactly aimed at girls (not that I'd avoid a good game of Quake II, but it's not my favorite), so I guess you could say that that makes girls less likely to get interested in that sort of thing.

I'm not sure why there are so few female hackers out there, but it does tend to filter out quite a few clueless ones. perhaps guys need the same thing -- before they become CS majors in college and have to transfer becasue they have no intuitive feel or experience.

well, for starters, any mensturating woman's weight is going to fluxuate a bit depending on hormones. for some women this can be 10 pounds or so gained/lost over the course of a month -- AND IT'S ALL WATER. makes the whole chart look a bit different, not to mention clothes.

the whole exercise thing is going to be different as well. there are ways of exercising that work very well (developed for the military academies, I believe), but don't require as much strength.

another thing about the book was it's relentlessly self-congratulating tone. maybe some people like that, but it's quite annoying to me.

I don't think it's quite that, though you're close. girls are expected to exibit mastery of certain areas, just as boys must. however, for each gender different areas are specified -- for girls, it tends to be in social skills (or "how to stab someone in the back in 10 easy steps" or "how to snub someone"). it has nothing to do with a deficiancy, however, that makes most female hackers I know opt out of the constant battle which is grade-school female relations, but rather disgust for thinly veiled backstabbing, giving "compliments" designed to hurt, etc. physical appearance has very little to do with this -- it determines part of rank inside their social system, not whether you are a part of it at all. that honor goes to accepting their notions of style and beauty, and trying to become them.

at least dominance in the area of sports is openly acnowledged as a goal.

however, it isn't being an outcast that makes a hacker. it's rather curiosity and intellegence, which many times places one out of the mainstream (voluntarily), but sometimes does not.

I have the right to say quite a few things that wou and other people would rather not hear. you could indeed claim, if it were upsetting enough, that you need not to hear it. however, that cannot override my right to say it (pendant of course on a few conditions that have more to do with your nose than my fist), at least in the US of A.

it is a tricky thing to determine the "needs of the many". who do you trust to do it? the president? the dictator? are they more the "many" than you or I? on the other hand, it is also hard to determine what rights an individual should have -- but it is far safer, in my opinion.
