Well, just as the buggy whip manufacturers lost their jobs, and people in the 80s lost their jobs to machines, your ex-bro in law will lose his job.

Are you suggesting that we should keep jobs just for people like this??

I guess he could join the army?? They always need people, i think the term is cannonfodder.

If you can't find something else for your former widgetmakers to do, you end up just draining money out of your economy. This is the important point, that you seem to gloss over. If you can't see that we do so many new, different jobs in out country within the last 20-30 years, then you are blind. Probably even your job would not have existed 20 years ago.

So we know that we have new types of jobs that needs new types of people, these people get paid MORE not less. So GDP is increasing. (as long pay from new jobs is greater than jobs lost, which I will conveniently gloss over in any great detail).

Seriously, how much customization to most people want - none. They just want a computer that works. Offer two models, one for the cheapos, one for the more reasonable people, and give people the ability to buy more hdd, ram, etc... simple.

The funny thing is, that picking your next CEO has a huge influence over the share price of the company. Picking someone who is perceived to be a corporate saviour is more important on whether they actually are.

Since the public can not actually know everything about a company, perception is very important.

They're definitely in the top three, but this isn't an industry that actually has metrics to determine who the "leader" is, like most industries do, and DoubleClick (and the other two big players in this field) don't share enough data to really determine this. In fact, this is like most industries. Most companies don't like sharing data about their practises, this is valuable information to their competition.

You are just getting older and more discerning, and popular music isn't targetted at you so much. Compared to teenagers, we are such a small section of the market (and no, I don't care if you buy 50 cds a week, you alone do not a market make).

Do you remember when your parents shouted at you to turn the music down?? That is because when the music was targetted at you, and not at your parents. New popular music is not targetted at you, so just like your parents, you think it is shit. Hate to break it to you, but there was crap music in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and yes now.

I don't find this too hard to believe. In the old days, if you wanted to listen to a particular song, you could request it on the radio, buy it at the shop, or copy it from a friend. If you were copying it from a friend, then it was reasonable for you to have something to copy, so maybe not everbody had the original, but each person had a few originals, and lots of copies. And of course, people who had no friends had all originals.

Now, you don't need friends. Music is easily available to download. How can you honestly say that this hasn't changed things??

Your dad is a fool, and has no place here on Slashdot. All OS can basically do the same thing, so there has to be some differentiation between them. For a lot of us here, it is about being free to do what we want with our OS, to try to weaken the control of a behemoth, to have a faster/smaller/superior OS, and to pay nothing for it. So if you want to go ahead and pay for something inferior, then I feel that we are in a position to mock you.

Mocking isn't the worst thing in the world, some people even learn from it. Just as you tease someone who can't tie their shoelaces, or wears their shirt the wrong way around, we tease you.
