If you honestly believe a bank wants to make a loan to a risk candidate like a poor person, I suggest you call a bank,
Nah, don't bother. Just realize that redlining still occurs - it's just more easily covered up now because "computers never lie" and all the redlining is "hidden" in the backend.
Or are those the reasons. After all, diabetes cases have increased dramatically in the U.S. and expect to continue to "surge" just like that company's profits. Coincidence?
We would all be better off if there was simply a vaccine for viral diseases, instead of drugs which have been proven to stimulate the evolution of resistant strains. Vaccines on the other hand have been proven to not only reduce the incidence of disease, but also virtually completely eradicate them, e.g. smallpox.
Easy - because there's no money in the cure. They want your repeat business to feed their cash cow. How are they going to do that with a one-time cure?
- Keeping you informed - While not every new technology is great, there are sooo many new technologies that *could* make your life easier, if only you could get over this *fear of change* you seem to have. Change is good - without it, we'd all be dead.
PHB: You must learn that change is good. Any questions?
Dilbert: Question: Why don't you triple our pay? That would be a change.
PHB: That would not be in the best interest of the shareholders.
Dilbert: Okay, why don't you work for free? That's a change that's good for shareholders...or would it be better to admit that change can be very bad?
Wally: My favorite part was when he yelled, "Stop ruining my slogans with your logic!"
So... Anyone up for breaking into the U of Wisc password database?
Why try brute force when you can pull a social engineering attempt:

Actually this is a bit of a myth in my experience. I send stuff to printers from Gimp fairly often and CMYK isn't an issue; they just convert it as part of their process.
As an estimator for the second largest printer in the world, I can tell you that CMYK isn't an issue and we will convert it for you, but we will charge you the desktop time for it. After all, conventional printing is done in CMYK, not RGB, so the conversion is a requirement. Most customers don't send in RGB files for this reason.
To be honest, I would like to see OpenOffice be able to output PDFs in CMYK rather than RGB. Any modern printing facility prefers finished PDFs over Quark as they need no manipulation. I could then convince some customers to generate their page layout in OpenOffice.
Also as an aside, contrary to popular belief, most large printing facilities do not accept word, excel, or other Microsoft files for printing. If they were stuck on using these formats, they could use OpenOffice to output those documents to PDFs and then print facilities would accept them.
Ok, ok, I'll admit that every time I get to tell a customer "I'm sorry, Microsoft Office file formats are not supported by our facility", I do kind of grin a little;)
No, apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, without using an internal repository and grabbing from a public system, would force untested patches. With an internal machine as a repository, you test the patches on a test machine before you put them on your internal production machine repository. The scheduled cron was for the internal machines to grab from the internal repository - since it would be the only resource in sources.list.
Common sense applies...then again, this is Slashdot.
1. Set up your own package server on the LAN - this means the package server will download from the internet. So you basically have ONE machine downloading from the net - the rest of the machines are done internally.
2. Next, set up your sources.list file to point only to that server.
In a big company, the company will train you on their time and their dime.
That's kind of a generalized statement and definitely not true in all cases. I work for a fortune 500 company and their training/schooling procedures are:
-If you "job shadow", which is training to do somebody else's job within the company, you are not allowed to do it on company time (even though it only directly benefits them.
-If you want any kind of training to do your job other than what you get internally (which 99% of the time is none), then you must pay for it and do it on your own time.
-If you want to go to school for something, the company will reimburse you depending on your grade. Of course, it must relate to what your current position is (I only half understand this one - how are you supposed to advance to a supervisor position if you don't have any management schooling, right?) and you have to do it on your own time. If you leave the company within three years of said schooling, you must pay them back 100% of what they granted you for schooling. This includes if you get fired or get laid off (Yes, I checked;) ). And yes, all of this on your own time too. In fact, when I took personal vacation time for school reasons a couple of times, my boss hung it over my head for weeks as if I had done something wrong. Apparently it's ok to take vacation for a camping trip, but not school.
-Another schooling note - only approved courses related to your current position will be considered for compensation.
I was denied a position that I was more than qualified for within the company. The reason they gave is "because you're going to school for something different" and hired people much less qualified. So much for their "Education is important for everyone" speeches they love to spew for PR.
Needless to say, I'm training on my own time, using my own cash. As soon as I finish up getting my Bachelor's (hopefully by the end of Winter 2007 semester), they're going to be on their own and the person replacing me will get the exact same training I got - none.
I know that every time I see a backhoe, I cringe. In fact we have one working on some lines out by our road right now and I bet the jacka.^@^$%^#@@#@!NOCARRIER
While I do agree with most of your statements, one is absurd:
3. Understand that raising a child means having one parent at home. If you have a child, stop spending money on toys and vacations and new cars and new clothes. Focus your money on your child's present and future.
I did just that, but now it's no longer possible to have someone home with my two girls because I am now divorced. I had kids when I was ready and I was able to work and have my now ex-wife stay home with them when we were married. I am now a single dad with two girls to take care of.
To address rule #3, I have only taken one real vacation in my life (just last May). I have to send my youngest to day care because I can't stay home with her. I have to have a job so I don't trample on "your hard-earned tax dollars". I buy most of my clothes and their clothes at Wal-Mart because I can't afford the nicer clothes because of divorce expenses (see: laywer) and losing half of everything I earned in my retirement while being married because she stayed home.
4. Understand that raising a child means constant care. Don't let your child go anywhere without knowing where and with whom. If one parent is home, this is much easier.
While my kids aren't really old enough (in my opinion) to be say, left at the mall, I can look at this statement realisticly and say that not every kid will tell you the truth of where they're going to be. Sure, they're staying at a friend's house, but all you can do is trust them not to sneak out and meet some boys somewhere in the middle of the night. If I (or even someone else) stayed home all the time with them, does that change the fact that kids are curious or will not tell white lies?
Let's put aside the fact that I'm divorced, let's say that my ex died in a car crash instead. Does that make things any different? Should I stay home with them instead of work? Get real. With a divorce rate that is greater than 50%, your "idea" is no longer realistic and it is quite apparent by your ignorance that you're indeed not a parent yourself.
Why, when I was a young programmer we had to write the code in the snow with our pee, and a compiler was just a word for the pilot of the hovering dirigible that read the instructions and passed them to the ALU, which was another fellow with an abacus. They would wrap the results around a rock, and drop it on my house when the program would exit. We had to walk uphill...
So that UPS (or FedEX driver..whatever) that lost those backup tapes from that large bank a while back (can't find the Slashdot article) with personal info of 40 million people means 40,000 people will have their credit messed with...but that's not bad, right?
I don't play the lotto much or anything, but 1/1000th chance of having my life messed up due to someone else's incompetence is still too high in my opinion.
Well, another way to look at it is that if their fields are blank, perhaps one could do some social engineering of their own and get their own info into the register and be the new owner of the domain. It works both ways you know. It's a chance you have to take when registering "anonymously" with false info.
I forsee one possible flaw with this technology. I am from Michigan and we see hot summers and cold winters. In winter, your hood will be much warmer than the rest of your vehicle due to the engine heat. I would think you would end up with blotches all over your car. In summer, the air conditioning, I would think, would produce similar results.
Nah, don't bother. Just realize that redlining still occurs - it's just more easily covered up now because "computers never lie" and all the redlining is "hidden" in the backend.
Oh wait...
I dunno, but I submitted this article while I was at work.
:)
One line was deleted from my original submission though:
"Since I'm posting this from work, I wonder if I'm covered...since it *is* work-related."
HEH!
This is what he was referring to. Specifically, this chart.

For a quick second there I thought you asked if the parent farted. Dog mad dyslexia.

That is NOT a small number...that is a BIG number. Computer over? Virus = very yes?!...and the Compy...just peed my carpet...
Strongsad: Strongbad, have you been using the internet irresponsibly?
Strongbad: No more irresponsibly than usual...

Sounds like they'd be a perfect candidate for someone obtaining a management degree.
