Yes, average temperatures can vary according to natural cycles and they can vary year on year just due to natural variations. In fact, it would be very surprising if the average temperature stayed constant for any length of time. It's entirely expected that we should get some years that are cooler than others.
One thing that indicates that the current global warming trend is a man-made phenomenon is the high rate of increase - this cannot be easily explained in terms of what we know about natural causes, but can be explained by theories of man-made warming i.e. the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere.
There may be a lot of hyperbole surrounding the whole climate change issue, but unbiased climate scientists have looked for alternative natural theories that explain the current warming trend - it's just that there's no theory that fits the data we observe nearly as well as CO2-caused warming.
Seriously if you carried a suspect image around on a different camera you could now call an expert witness to show that it was not taken on this camera - and since the only other people who had access to the camera were the police it must be a frame.
And of the 99% remaining, what percentage is given over to monoculture? An acre of orange trees is as uninhabitable to a frog as an acre of concrete.

Modern art is pointless.
You do know that the term "modern art" includes art by people such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Pollock, Dali, Cézanne, Manet etc?
I suspect you mean "contemporary art" or "postmodern art" or possibly "conceptual art"? "Modern art" is used to describe the majority of art created in the 100 years or so from 1860 onwards, and is related to modernism, rather than being used to describe any art that was created recently.
Before they go too far with the designs, DARPA might want to check their figures for the densities of water and air. Last time I checked they differed by a lot more than "an order of magnitude" and I'd think this might be important.
But imagine we knew everything about the universe. No more Hubble telescopes, an end to space exploration, nothing to hypothesize, dream about and discuss outside our known cosmic knowledge. I would find _that_ depressing.

For those unfamiliar with colloidals, it is
from the Greek work kolla, meaning glue as the
first colloids were just that. Particulate size
is such that surface area is greater than volume
thus the particulates tend not to settle from
gravity.
And for those unfamiliar with mathematics, the bit relating surface area to volume does not make any sense.
Hmm, I'm not sure about education getting worse - when I studied electrochemical reactions 20 years ago, batteries did indeed produce electricity (or more accurately, electrical energy) albeit from stored chemical energy and a battery stores electricity no more than a lump of coal stores heat or a reservoir stores kinetic energy in a hydroelectric plant. To store electrity (electric charge) you'd need to use a capacitor.
Surprisingly, Edinburgh is 40 miles from the midway point between the northernmost and southernmost points of the UK (Shetland Islands 60 51', Edinburgh 55 56', Scilly Isles 49 51'). I wouldn't consider that to be "far north".
I really was referring to the 'Big Bang' idea that pervades evolution: that everything exploded into existance. This doesn't seem plausible to me.
This is exactly what the theory of evolution is not -
Evolution is a gradual process that takes place over many generations.
If you're interested in learning more about how evolutionary biologists really think evolution happens I would recommend the book "Climbing Mount Improbable" by Richard Dawkins - after reading this it becomes clear how something as complex as the human eye can evolve, step-by-step. And you don't need to be a biologist to follow most of what is said:-)

> Is Top Gear available on DVD? I've seen it once or twice here in the US, though I don't remember if it was on TV or a copy of the show that I found online.
The early series are available on DVD but it looks like the BBC will only deliver in the EU ( http://www.bbcshop.com/).
There are a few clips available online - I particularly like the clip where the Apache helicopter gunship attempts to get missile lock on a Lotus Exige.
In programme 5, BBC's Top Gear tried to destroy a Toyota pickup by various means including fire, immersion in water, and dropping from 200ft - if only they'd known about the "old oil trick".

Commonly called a "picture frame" I believe.
I hear they considered the environmentally friendly Pooh Stick alternative but felt that was too childish.

I'm disappointed with the destruct button. I was hoping for something more like the system used on the Nostromo in Alien.
I love Slashdot - where else would you be modded insightful for telling a funnier joke?!

It's not just Scandanavia - some sheep farms in the UK are still affected by contamination (as of 2006):

So mergesort's O(n log n) is replaced by O(n/10 log n). That's impressive!

"Duration" or "distance" might have been more informative IMO.
Now I've got to read the damn article!
shouldn't that have been:

Of course you are correct, but I'm lazy and guessed there wasn't a file named www.photosparks.com in my pwd so the result is the same.
