PS: This is how the current system works, except your advisors are examiners. They have a monetary incentive to get you to formally abandon your patent. They do have expertise in the area. Examiner's are assigned to specific art units based on the technology. Further, they not only have knowledge of the area, they have knowledge of at least a portion of the patents that have already crossed their desk.

And yes, patents are filled with mumbo-jumbo because they are to be understood by one skilled in the art, not the general public. A patent is supposed to teach your processor design, its supposed to teach someone who knows processor design how to implement new idea X.

If you plan to edit out the commercials I would expect that you would plan to pay more the content in the first place. Maybe your cable bill will triple That, and you will see more advertising mixed into the actual show. Television shows are not produced for free. Frankly, I'd rather watch commercials than have to pay more for television. I'm all for making the two options available but it doesn't seem realistic unless all content is subscription content and media companies can stop all internet sharing.

Do you see any way around this problem?

For students, paraphrasing is a part of learning. If you can read something that someone else wrote and rewrite it in your own words you probably know the material. If you go and photocopy a page in a book all you've learned is how to make photocopies.

Further, not everything that takes time is wasteful. Copyright is intended to protect the expression of ideas, not the underlying ideas. Thus, you don't protect the idea of love or even the words I love you, but you can protect the expression of love and the words I love you in the context of lyrics to a song possibly with a musical score.
