We have too much news as it is, or rather too many copies of the same news report. Maybe newspapers will start hiring reporters again if the wire services all opt out of Google. But I doubt that Reuters, AP, and UPI will be as dumb as AFP. AFP's subscribing newspapers will find their subscriptions less valuable as Google traffic disappears.

  6. This should improve news site management on Media Organizations Join Forces to Fight Canadian Ruling · · Score: 1
The Post continues to sell a story containing allegations that were proven incorrect, after learning that they were incorrect. At the least, the Post could add a prominent correction or update: "Mr. B was later found innocent, given back pay, and reinstated." Is that more difficult than a lawsuit?

No, it's not an undue burden of care. Such corrections need be made only when an affected party provides one. No harm, no foul.

The Post seems to be arguing that it should not be required to clean up its own messes. This is really no different from expecting Microsoft to patch a security hole after being notified of its existence. Failure to do so is irresponsible and shows reckless disregard for the impugned party as well as the Post's own credibility.

  11. I *love* this School Board! on Creationist Textbook Stickers Declared Unconstitutional · · Score: 1

Lost in the immediate uproar over the stickers' presence is the laudable cunning exhibited by the newly elected Cobb County School Board way back when they approved the stickers. They put evolution back into the county's curriculum, from which it had been banished for years. They accomplished that worthy goal by compromising on the stickers - which they knew damned well wouldn't pass Constitutional muster. "But hey - we tried!" they can tell fundamentalist voters! Gotta love 'em! :-)
