    considering the first law of thermodynamics, nothing is lost there either. and like you, i'll choose to read / consider no further because my brain is just incapable of continuing if i find one shred of information that doesn't work for me.

    For example, an item can be purchased with points, points can be purchased with cash or earned, but someone feels compelled to put a real cash value on every single item declaring that an item I got for free was overpriced.

    this only makes sense for people with more time than money, like you apparently. it makes a lot more sense for most people to work longer at their real jobs and buy in-game items than to sit around earning them in-game. those people complaining that things are overpriced are doing something you aren't, which is actually considering their personal exchange rate between time and money. if you ground for days, or whatever, to get your item, it certainly wasn't free.

    EVE may have an allowable way to inject money into the game, but it is not at all like buying a maxed out WoW character and jumping into the server.

    you can buy accounts in EVE just like you can buy an account in WoW. and yes you can buy EVE in-game currency with real world currency.

    you are trying to draw a distinction that doesn't exist.

    all of the money in EVE is a result from people doing work. money doesn't just materialize in the corp accounts. it's a result of tax on members. just like a real nation / military, corp members have to expend time and expenses to control the territory that allows their members to earn money, and the corporation to earn money via tax.

    when a players loses a ship in EVE, that is a real loss because that player, or another player somewhere had to accumulate the wealth to create that ship. they spent real world time doing so.

    the money was really lost, in the same way if you had worked for 6 months and saved then went to vegas and lost it all gambling. just because you had fun gambling doesn't mean the money was not really lost.

    In this case the $200,000 worth of virtual ships weren't destroyed in hope if improving the in-game economy

    not to improve the in-game economy, but perhaps for individual or group economic gain.

      much of the destruction in EVE happens in the course of in-game economic pursuits. players destroy ships to get their cargo. players hold other players at ransom threatening to destroy their ship. players control territory to reap the economic rewards contained therein. players kill other players for the right to salvage particular rich anomalies. and so on.

    They don't need to roll out Google Fiber everywhere (though that would be awesome), just do it enough times to demonstrate to ISPs that they can do it anywhere.

    they can do it anywhere, but not everywhere. not even google could afford to fiber enough of the US to even put a small dent in Big ISP's wallet.

    Anarchy is about whichever individuals or groups have the bigger bombs, biceps, knives or guns.

    there are many definitions of anarchism, but unless you are talking about the one popularized by the sex pistols, you are not correct. the basic tenant are law + freedom without force, and non-hierarchical leadership.

    law + freedom without force: think of a small village where people's behavior is governed not by rules, but by social pressure. refrain from stealing my cow because if you do you'll be outcast from society, not because there are rules + punishment. think of why you don't steal from you mom. she probably wouldn't call the police, but you probably value your position in your family enough that it's not worth it.

    non-hierarchical leadership: you can have a leader, but it's bob who lives down the street, not some guy 1500 miles away with 18 layers between you and him.

    the original post said android users are loathe to purchase apps. that's wrong. lower-income users are loathe to purchase apps, and are more likely to pirate them (more time than money). yep, it is what it is, but characterizing all android users as "loathe" to purchase apps is not correct.

    p.s., re-check your findings now that the iphone is released in china.

    sorry. you can't just compare apple w/ the latest greatest android device. you have to take into consideration the bulk of the android market that is mid to low-end devices. of course those are included in the stats.

    or did you have some data on how much nexus 5 users spend in apps vs. apple users? no? then why are you making the comparison?

    do you have any breakdown of how much high-end android phone users spend on apps vs. apple users? no? do you know they don't spend as much as apple users? duh. it's well understood that there are many, many more low-end android devices compared to zero low-end apple devices.

    it doesn't take a genius here to understand that the difference is economic.

    Despite have a tremendous number of Android smart phones active world wide and over 48 billion apps installed the Apple App store blows away Google Play revenues.

    that's like saying people who own $1M+ homes also spend more on cars. duh? apple sells high-end devices, and it's users spend for money on add-ons such, peripherals, and cases.

    google doesn't care. they want people using their search and services. sure, they are happy to earn $ from the play store, but search profits dwarf what apple makes on their app store. the are about getting the largest # of devices in the most hands, not add-on sales.

    Also, for those who don't know, KitKat [arstechnica.com] has Google Now taking over your home screen, meaning Google now listens on your microphone 24/7 (as if it hasn't already).

    no, it doesn't. you have to start the google search / google now app for it to listen.

    create uber-apps for iOS and android --- nintendo gamecenter, a combined set of emulators and a store for buying legacy nintendo games. people are stealing their ROMs anyway, they might as well make some $ themselves. they could license one of the many existing emulators, utilize in-app purchases on both platforms and have the whole thing up and running for cheap.

    wrong.

    the most inhospitable places on earth are like paradise compared to mars. conditions on earth would need to get much, much worse before we'd break even. the root of our problem here is scarce resources. that's not going to magically go away on mars. it's going to be much, much worse. growing food? can't just walk outside and plant something. you have to find water, that's frozen under the surface, thaw it, and pipe it to the sealed, heated, and completely environmentally controlled habitat. even the simplest things we take for granted on earth are a massive complicated task.

    if we can't make it here, we aren't going to make it there.

    I think generation matters too, I find the Chinese students around here an absolute dream, they're smart, pleasant, polite, and put my native British brethren to shame but in some tourist cities like York you get a lot of older Chinese visitors that bring their habits with them, which are a bit of a culture shock for us Brits - spitting into tissues/cups all the time, refusing to queue and pushing past everyone waiting to be served and so forth.

    there are rude, simple minded, and insensitive people from all cultures. do you know some people that are rude and pushy, and some people that are open minded and polite? well, same with other cultures.

    No sales receipt was ever generated. I complained to Apple and was told that they don't control in-game purchases and that since we didn't buy anything from "Apple", they could not refund anything

    i had a similar situation, where my son spent $100+ of real money on in-app purchases. i emailed apple and they refunded it, with a stern warning that this would be the last time i'd get a refund ... which seemed completely fair.

    Corporations are better at saving and investing than individuals. The investments made today is what is going to raise a worker’s productivity tomorrow. A worker’s productivity is one of the prime factors in determining their pay.

    umm what? the only interest a corporation has in increasing worker productivity is to hire fewer workers and save money. maybe 10 jobs transition to 1 job + computers + machines, but that only happens if the corporation is overall paying out less.
