  1. Old PCI vga cards on Running Old Desktops Headless? · · Score: 1

Search your local cleanups for motherboards with integrated gfx.
Or find some really old PCI vga videos cards on cleanups.

The key here isn't so much power usage. It's reliability.
And you DON'T want a card that needs a fan or large heatsinks.
A cool running old pci card (s3 trio, ati mach64 etc) is going
to still last longer than a hot running card with or without a
    heatsink (eg nvidia 5200 etc)

Use a cheap vga switcher to switch between multiple boxes.

This method is best for quick local logins & maintinance.
When your machine has a problem, you don't want to be
rooting round with serial links etc.

  3. Re:Beyond the Alien on Ridley Scott Directing Alien Prequel · · Score: 1

    Exactly!

I see it as the Aliens/Eggs are in fact just a bio weapon. Even the ship - With it's built in alien was manufactured for war.
This ship was perhaps hit in part of the bio egg weapons storage and infected the crew/pilot of the ship.
ALSO - The TRUE aliens that created these bio eggs - May be Acid blood. As may well their enemy(s) they produced them for.
And infection/gestation is very rapid - And can locate itself anywhere in the body. BUT for humans - There's not much acid to gestate in, And it's only located in the stomach. Hence the slower gestation and the only target area being the stomach (via mouth) for infection - It knows it must keep the recipient alive long enough to gestate with what little acid is available.

  4. Safest home backup solution on Best Home Backup Strategy Now? · · Score: 2, Informative

    Safest home backup solution

Use standard commodity parts for easy replacement/reconstruction.
ie. Consumer grade writable disc's and external hard drives.

Backup Home data to DVD/BR/CD regularly (Monthly)

Backup Bulk data with 3 Hard disks!!!!

    1) Use one Live HD

    2) Use one to backup Live

    3) Use ANOTHER to backup Live again

    The Reason?
If your backup is large, You will probably need to erase the target drive.
At this point you are VERY vulnerable.
    With your only backup erased,
You had better hope your live drive doesn't fail while backing up again.
Or you may accidentally delete something from the live drive WHILE backing up.

With a 3rd hard drive, At least you can recover from your last backup if your current backup somehow nukes itself.

    Dangers....
    1) Don't have a live drive and think your safe with another live drive synced, You really want to keep hard drive backups IN
STORAGE. If it's live it can and probably will die. It's just a matter of time or circumstances. This goes for raid too.
    2) This is home storage, So 6/12 month hard disk backups should root out any bit rot or hard disk seizures.

You must have the head tracking for true 3d.
Using glasses with two separate images is just "Stereoscopic" vision - Not full 3d at all.
Im not sure why there is so much attention to Stereoscopic images. To me Headtracking is 80% of 3d vision, 10% is the stereoscopic part and 10% is other (Balance etc)

  8. DVD players support DivX4/5 on Most Consumers Sitting Out The High-Def War · · Score: 1

I don't know what others are doing, But I just purchased a standard DVD player that had both USB and SDCard slots. (Some cheap AWA model from BigW) It plays DivX4/5. I have a few dvd's - but like many others, download some TV content like Dr Who and Battlestar (Boo Hyperdrive is canned). I simply copy the recent showing to USB drive. Plug into said DVD player and away I go.

IMHO "Discs" are to go the way of the dodo. Considering 1gb usb drives are now $10au and you can either have a few of them or just erase/copy/play again when you want. Distributors could easily manufacture Dongled ROM's or whatever to "Protect" their raw content. And transcoding to lower res (aka DivX) is fair use IMHO.

I certainly don't need/want Blu-ray or HD-DVD. As Im happy with the quality of DVD or Convenience of DivX (Kinda like the way many people are happy with mp3. ie. It's good enough.)
