Working with stick men in animation, Mr. Kauffman wanted to improve upon those techniques, assigning more numbers to more body parts and actions.

While studying number generators for the cartoon project, he found references to mathematicians and computer scientists who had theorized that the technique could be used in encryption technology [...]

"Since you don't know what any of the values are mathematically, [a hacker] can't solve it," says Robert E. Kauffman, who is a senior research chemist at Dayton and Jason Kauffman's father.

If I understand it correctly, Alice sends a cartoon to Bob. Bob knows which features to looks for (for example the head and feets) -- that's the secret key -- and can then reconstruct the message by analysing the movements of these features.

Not too dumb, but it looks more like steganography than cryptography.

The author says PowerMac G4 933MHz with a 60Gb hard drive, 256Mb of RAM, and a Super Drive (that's DVD and CD-RW people!). This is going to run me $2,299.00. At Dell's website (Dude, yer getting' a Dell) I can get a 1.8GHz Dimension with an 80Gb drive for $1,497.00. That's $800 dollars less for the same functionality, more hard drive space, twice the clock speed (I won't get into CPU architecture), and your required contribution to the Microsoft Empire in the form of Windows XP and Microsoft Works.

First, the superdrive is a DVD-R and CD-RW, it burns DVDs and CDs. The Dell doesn't have that, and guess what, it costs about 800$ to get one. The assembled-with-the-cheapest-possible-parts-PC doesn't have a warrantee, so it's not a fair comparaison.

Also, his whole argument about weither more MHz is better is quite stange. At first he says that only Joe Sixpack thinks that, and people who know computer architecture relalise that the MHz are only a part of a computer speed. Two lines later, he says that the Mac is slower because it has a lower frequency.

Let me tell you something, if you ever have two computers that have the same performances (time to do a task), always take the one with the lower frequency, you'll have a more stable system, it will produce less heat, etc.

Overall, it was a pretty crappy article...

Limitations on the Powers of the Board

Anyone contemplating objecting to CPCC's proposed statement must realize that the Copyright Act sets out a number of limits on what the Board may or may not do. No purpose is served by objecting to the proposed statement based on grounds about which the Board can do nothing. In the following paragraphs, we summarize some of the limits imposed on the Board's
    powers in this matter:
    (1) The Board must certify a tariff and set a levy. Those who own the rights to sound recordings of musical works (composers, authors, performers and producers) are entitled to be remunerated for private copies. No purpose is served by asking the Board to reject the tariff as a whole.
    (2) Only persons who own rights in sound recordings of musical works are entitled to share in the remuneration; owners of rights in other works (computer programs, movies, literary works) are not.
    (3) The remuneration must be paid by manufacturers and importers of blank audio recording media, in the form of a levy to be imposed on those media. The obligation to pay arises when the media are sold or otherwise disposed of in Canada by the manufacturer or importer. The Board cannot set the levy at the retail level.
    (4) The levy is payable on all media that qualify, without regard to end use. No purpose is served by asking that the tariff include a mechanism that would allow those who can prove that they use qualifying media for purposes other than reproducing musical works to be exempted from payment or to receive a refund.
    (5) The Copyright Act exempts from the levy recording media that are sold to a society, association or corporation that represents persons with perceptual disabilities. The Copyright Board cannot grant any other exemption.

The term "processor pipeline" refers to the number of processing steps, or stages, it takes to accomplish a task. The fewer the steps, the shorter -- and more efficient -- the pipeline. Thanks to its efficient 7-stage design (versus 20 stages for the Pentium 4 processor) the G4 processor can accomplish a task with 13 fewer steps than the PC. You do the math.

That's really FUD, a longer pipeline is better, the Pentium4 can start 20 instructions before the first one is finished, while the G4 can only do 7. The G4 is faster than the P4 for other reasons.

If they charge something for the signing, the number of people on usenet would drop. And if this is free, how could any kind of verification of the authentity be made?

Also you would loose a lot of Usenet's privacy, since everything is signed by the sender. The evil-corporation/NSA/Ashcroft/MPAA could prove that you send a specific usenet message and beat you with a big stick.
