I recently reinstalled Windows with SP2 (actually due to SUSE Linux breaking my partitions)... I logged onto the internet, and I got no viruses. Shockingly, this did happen. I've also never had MS Blaster. I run Windows Update regularly.

I ran Spybot and I installed an antivirus 6 months later. Nothing. Zilch. Kapowsa. Now, I may be niave or something, but if this worked for me without a problem and you had all sorts of problems it's for one of two reasons:
    A. I was very lucky
    B. You didn't set up everything up correctly and securely.

Since I doubt A, having had two Windows XP installations working fine and knowing plenty of people who have too, I'll suggest B.

PS: Feel free to send me an e-mail the day I can run a modern version of KDE without Konquerer.

PPS: I'm a happy Windows user. I installed Linux, SUSE's partition software and boot loader fudged up my Windows partition so I had to FDisk - booting from a Windows XP CD. So there we go.

These major ones spring to mind:
Pyoro 1 and 2 in Warioware Inc. Fantastic fun little things
The lightgun game Demolition Racer for Dreamcast. Lovely fun little game
The useless VMU games and both Pocketstation games that no-one ever played
Galaxians in the Ridge Racer loading screen
All the retro games in modern titles (PoP and the NES games in Animal Crossing)
NiGHTs and Puyo Pop for GBA in PSO and Billy Hatcher for GC
Blackhole Assault with an inbuilt pong game

After Googling, there's a whole FAQ full at http://www.steverd.com/faqs/hiddengames.htm - dates back to 1999, but the point is still there.

Just so happens I'm a bit thick, spend too much time on forums, put the wrong link in and messed up the last reply... so fixing it here. Sorry people! It's early here!

It's not to do with bandwidth. It's more to do with the fact that within the cable the image can bleed (it's analogue, not digital remember). S-Video removes this by giving the major elements of a formable image their own cable each. RGB is technically better by splitting the image into only the parts you can see, but the US don't have a format for that.

Okay, no matter how safe this design is, that sounds a little stupid. Looks like China didn't learn much from Chernobyl - demonstrating safety of nuclear powerplants isn't always a particularly good idea. Stick to computer simulations in the future, thanks.

  11. It's a violation of the GPL on Does Shareware X-Chat for Windows Violate the GPL? · · Score: 2, Informative

It definately is a violation of the GPL, as he's releasing a binary of a modified GPLed source code without actually releasing the source. We know this, as:
    * People released additions on the original GPL code, and it's safe to presume he's already used them. Even if no license was specifically stated, as the patch was for GPL code it is already GPLed otherwise THAT code would be in violation of the GPL license. Allowing people to remove the code in question by e-mailing him isn't good enough - that exception obviously isn't in the GPL. He's legally allowed to relicense his own code as much as he likes, but he's not allowed to relicense others.
    * The binary expires after 30 days. I can safely assume that some code would have to be added to do that to the basic *nix source which contains other peoples GPLed code contained.
    * There are no "easy to compile" Windows source. We can assume that he must alter the code to allow it to compile. He hasn't released the code changes, while used other peoples GPLed code.

Clearly in violation, unless he's compiling the shareware binary and not releasing the source based on a version which only contains his own code (which the author has already admitted isn't true).

But either way, it gives people even more reason to use mIRC - a closed source shareware app that's fast, efficient and doesn't expire even after 30 days. And, whatsmore, it's much, much better than Xchat - I've used it for 8 years now and I'm as happy as ever.

  12. The problem with these sorts of books... on Always Use Protection · · Score: 4, Insightful

is that it uses the assumption that teenagers - a group that have grown with modern technology - do not understand the basic concepts of computing, privacy etc. I would argue this isn't actually true.

A better audience for a similar book would be the average parent PC user who doesn't understand why their PC is giving him those stupid Messenger messages, why they should run Windows Update or the average 419 scam to make them better equipt for the world. In my admittedly limited travels, it's been a lot easier to explain technical stuff to the teenage generation, and I'm sure each teenager has a /.-reading PC geek in their class. And, we can assume, any responsible parent who knows about scams, clichéd chatroom use, P2P virii etc would educate their children about this stuff anyway. It's not exactly complicated to explain to people who have grown up with this stuff.

I also assume the book includes a degree of uninformed scaremongering. Firewalls are not required - indeed, you can safely use the internet without a software firewall simply because they can be easily bypassed by anyone caring enough to bypass them - ie trojan writes. Viruschecking software is not essential if you are smart enough to know what you're running and don't run the average VBS file or P2P fraud (PHOTOSHOP 7.0.REAL.EXE). 4 years with yearly virus checks confirms this.

And I'm sure that parents treat children like idiots regarding the average "chatroom" use. No doubt the fools who previously gave their names and telephone numbers to random people on the 'net must have got the message by now, and that assumes that there are large amounts of people gullible to be taken in by it.
