If you knew WTF you were talking about, you'd be well aware that these people understand the stupidity of movie plot threats precisely because they spend a great deal of time trying to invent plausible scenarios themselves.
I call bullshit. These people do not have an education or specialization in public policy or any other field applicable to non-movie-plot threats. Their entire careers are based on writing entertaining fiction and not the drudgery of high quality infrastructure planning.
Many of these guys and gals have been consulting for the government long before DHS existed.
Well if that's true, which I kinda doubt, then it was just as stupid to be hiring them back then as it is now.
quite another to plan for a society using generational ideas that span more than the length of a politicians career.
You seem to be unclear on exactly what the Department of Homeland Security does for a living.
Actually, I guess that is no surprise, most people probably have no idea either since all they seem to is spend billions of tax dollars with little to no tangible benefit.
What about it? The cops were trying to locate the man by having the phone company turn on hs phone. The missing man wasn't trying to dial out.
If they can remotely "turn it on" - which is undefined in the article - then they already know which tower(s) it is talking to and should be able to triangulate his position within at least 100 meters or so if not much better.
Don't even contractless cell phones have to support calling 911? If so, doesn't that mean they are always talking to nearby tower(s) just as much as any other cell phone and thus just as easily trackable?
Yeah, an improvement but only in the entertainment value.
These guys do best exactly what we don't need more of from the DHS - "movie plot threats."
"Movie plot threats" are a dime a dozen, we will bankrupt ourselves trying to defend against even a fraction of a precent of them. We need to spend money on the basics like first responders, medical facilities, emergency planning, etc that apply to any threat, man-made or acts of god.
And once that stuff is taken care of to a reasonable degree, the rest of the money needs to stay in the hands of private citizens who will make much more productive use of it - whether it is as simple as buying food and shelter for their families or running small businesses.
Yes. Same-sex romance is intrinsically an adult subject.
Yes, having a stick up your ass is intrinsically an adult subject.
And female same-sex romance is a spectacle for straight men to gawk at.
And stick-up-the-ass romance is a spectacle for everyone to gawk at.
Particularly, bisexual women are actually straight but want attention from men. Remember, female sexuality has no value other than as a spectacle for men.
Particularly, anonymous cowards with a stick up their ass are actually straight but want attention from slashdot readers. Remember, a stick up yo' ass has no value other than as a spectacle for everybody else.
Also, all children are born straight. Each exposure to the concept of same-sex romance increases the likelihood that they'll turn gay.
Also, all children are born straight. Each exposure to the concept of a stick up their ass increases the likelihood they'll turn gay.
The above is categorically not a self-centred, privileged world view that demeans everybody else in order to make me look cool for a couple of seconds in front of my privileged friends.
I hear Jessica Biel is going to play the kick-ass female ghostbuster who doesn't take crap from nobody - but is she falling for the hunky new ghostbuster (Shia LaBeouf)?
Make it R-rated with Lindsay Lohan falling for the kick-ass female ghostbuster and I'll go see it! Or at least download it from the pirate-bay!
It's a shame that a relatively interesting idea, has to be marketed as an ANTI-TERROR product for it to get any attention.
It isn't that it HAS to be marketed as anti-terror, it's that there are truckloads of money from the federal government ready for the driving away by anyone who can claim an anti-terror license.
It ain't anywhere as easy to get funding for routine maintenance or basic infrastructure, so the PR guys at each company are essentially writing the grant applications for the local governments which are their target customers.
A broad enough dataset can be used to determine things well beyond it's intended scope.
Indeed, any regular reader of slashdot (or even better, any reader of RISKS Digest) should be well aware of that. Here's one example we all should remember:
Which he probably got from Rousseau, who reckoned that political parties made democracy impossible.
They certainly make the "separation of powers" and "checks and balances" system unworkable.
By having the same party in control of more than one branch those branches are no longer in significant competition but rather controlled by whomever or whatever group controls the party.
but I do sense that American women seem pretty expensive.
And ultimately that's all you've got, a sense. A sense that could be explained by any number of other factors, such as the high cost of living in general in the US.
Are those the values of the women in question, or are they the values of their fathers who are trying to jack their price back up?
Dowries aren't anywhere near as common as they used to be in those countries. But the women, as a rule, still aren't sluts. Hell, in India where sex is almost as easily available for cheap, the dowry goes in the other direction - i.e. the bride's family pays.
Never said so. In fact, I implied otherwise when I said that the replacement section editorially blocks illegal services - presumably it is not empty.
However my point of contention was that it was simply a "one time meet-up" section - by virtue of being paid services it does not fit the regular meaning of the word "meet-up."
Once the killer robot gets a head shot on the boy (he's dead, no chance of resuscitation) the show is over. The "very complex plot with many main characters" collapses because there is nothing else to carry it.
Gee, the same thing could be said about BSG - once the cylons take out that last of the ragtag fleet that's the end of the story, the "very complex plot with many main characters" collapses because there is nothing else to carry it.
Will the killer robot kill the hero this week? Will the hero robot kill the killer robot this week? And the plot never changes. The killer robot doesn't take out the rest of humanity. It doesn't even try to kill his grandparents. Great-grandparents. Etc.
The series really wasn't about that plot. Sure that plot was there in the background, but it wasn't really the focus. The clue comes from the title "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" - the series was about Sarah Connor and all the other stuff was backstory. Sometimes they took a break from the trials and tribulations of being mother to a messiah and focused on the back-and-forth of robot assassins. But the primary focus was on being Sarah Connor.
I'd like them to take it a step further and have it so the owner can see the error codes and refer to the manual.
You can go to most any major chain auto store like Autozone and they will typically read the code out for free or at worst a very minor charge. If it is a common code, the guy will probably know exactly what it means, if it isn't so common, chances are you can google it pretty easily.
That's not to say I don't agree with you - I think any car that has one of those big LCD displays on the console ought to also be able to display any and all diagnostic events with a paragraph of explanation. I'm just saying you had another option besidkes driving to a dealer 700 miles away and over paying them.
That said, it's still Nader's fault, because despite the faults of the US voting system, Nader knew those faults, and knew exactly what he was doing. He thought that getting more funding for his party was worth 4 years of George Bush and as I recall he didn't even get enough votes to get the extra funding anyway so he shafted us, and everything he stood for for 8 years to prove a point.
That is utter bullshit. I didn't vote for Nader, but even I understand that the only reason Nader got votes is because he offered something the other parties didn't. Blaming Nader for being the best choice in some people's eyes is like saying that the only people who should be allowed to vote are those will vote for the status quo.
The Adult Section is just like any of hundreds of online and print services meant to match people of similar interests.
No.
Until last week there was no "Adult" section of any sort. There was (and still is) a Casual Encounters section which is for precisely the kind of no-strings-attached physical meetups you describe.
However, the subject of controversy has been the Erotic Services section which was not about simple meetups, it was about actual for-pay services. Just like all the other Services sections like automotive, household, financial, legal, etc. The Erotic Services section has been discontinued (only inside the USA) and replaced with an Adult Services section which is practically the same thing but now has an editorial review to make sure all of the ads posted there do not specify any illegal services (they may still be general enough let the reader fill in the details, but anything that is specifically illegal is editorially blocked from posting).
And exactly how are they not responsible? They have/had a forum (erotic services) on their website known to all as a place you go to hire a prostitute. In effect, that Craigslist knowingly allowed the advertisements.
Not every ad in the erotic services section was/is for illegal activities. There are plenty of things that fall into that category that are not generally illegal - like strippers, or phone-sex and sex-cam operators, even some kinds of S&M/domination that don't involve sexual contact.
Prostitution cannot be made legal after womens' suffrage. Women dislike the competition, and because they vote in greater numbers than men, they will never allow prostitution to be legalized.
There are so many counter examples to your claims that it is ridiculous.
Start with all the places prostitution is legal in one form or another. Like, Rhode Island, for example. Or Canada. Or most countries in Europe. All these places have the exact same set of marital problems as all the uptight places do.
Then look at SE asia - notorious for the cheap and easy sex trade which, while illegal, is pretty much condoned in countries like Thailand and the Philippines where it is also regulated and flourishes. So, if your theory about "lowering the asking price" were correct, with all the cheap sex available in SE asia even the "good girls" would be extreme sluts. While non-prostitutes in those countries aren't known for being "cold fish," they certainly have a lot of what most westerners would consider "old fashioned values" like being chaperoned on your first few dates.
And note that he is the senior partner in his own law firm.
Taken by itself, that's really nothing exceptional. There are lots of lawyers who are senior partners at their own firm, primarily because they are the only lawyer at their law firm.
If you would like to challenge their credibility,
I'm challenging YOUR credibility. You made an assertion, put up or shut up.
If you knew WTF you were talking about, you'd be well aware that these people understand the stupidity of movie plot threats precisely because they spend a great deal of time trying to invent plausible scenarios themselves.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Ditto!
It is all objective fact.
It is all self-indulgent righteousness.

Mod parent sore-ass loser.

So, what they are saying is that their choices aren't simply limited to:
Either you are with us, or you are against us.
Now the axis of evil can chose to be around us instead.
Straw man. I didn't say anything about marital problems. And anyway you are lying about being in possession of such data.
I used the term "marital problems" as a euphemism.
