  1. Re:If you're getting paid... on Job and Internship Salary Comparisons? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm currently an undergrad software engineering intern at Lockheed Martin, and I get paid a little more than $18 an hour... and the experience is invaluable - pretty much from day 1, I've been doing the work of a professional software engineer, never doing stereotypical "intern work" like getting coffee and donuts. Incidentally, if you're wondering how I got this job, my previous qualifications were a mediocre (3.3ish) GPA at a state university which has a good computer science and engineering program but is generally poorly regarded otherwise. I had a single brief interview over the phone which involved no technical questions. Smaller companies are more likely to want previous experience, since they can't afford to really train you on the job as well. I agree with Artraze entirely that you have to choose a position that's right for you. If you get an internship at a large company, and you are unsatisfied with your assignment, they can probably move you to another project - remember, it's not like school - they want you to succeed because they are trying to develop you as an asset to the company.

Sure, nuclear terror is plenty frightening and cheap solar power would be great.

    But what about the zombies?

Developing an effective plan to stave off a massive zombie invasion is the transcendent challenge of our time. We need to do this sooner rather than later, and we need to be prepared when it happens. Cyberspace, virtual reality, fusion power, even clean water - all of this will be for naught if we're all undead.

You're probably thinking by now (if you're still reading, that is), "Simple. Shoot them in the head." Well, if zombie movies and books are at all accurate - and I've seen nothing to lead me to believe otherwise - things will quickly spiral out of control and there will be more of them than we can handle before we know it.

Maybe if we could domesticate them... (this always works well in the movies)

As a Republican, I agree, but not necessarily for the same reasons. The big reason that Republicans should oppose this is that it creates more government bureaucracy - now I'm no crazy Ron Paul supporter who wants to get rid of every federal government institution, but really, this is not a good solution. I've always thought that government should stay out of this whole issue - it's costing the big media companies money, so they should be investing their money into stopping it. There's a reason that retail stores have security guards - it's cheaper for them in the long run to deter theft than to call the cops every time that something gets taken.

I'm a CS major right now. I'll agree with many of the posters who have said that CS should require many classes in math and theory as opposed to strictly training in practical programming without regard to the mathematical basis which underlies it. However, I also think that we are required to take a lot of ridiculous classes as well. Right now, I'm taking "Writing for the Technical Professional-" a class which the university only requires of CS majors. It's all busy work- like I need a class to help me write a resume or business letters. So on the one hand, they set out classes in math and theory in order to give us an academic understanding of computer science, but on the other, they make us take mindless classes like tech writing in order to give us practical skills. This seems somewhat contradictory to me.

I'm a CS major at a major research university in the US. We have a large computer science program, but software engineering is only offered as an optional "concentration" in the computer engineering major. As far as I can tell, most of the CS students are mostly interested in getting a career programming, whereas the computer engineering people tend to focus more on the integration of hardware and software- especially building robots and other autonomous systems. Our computer engineering program is very close to the electrical engineering program, so they take nearly all of the same courses. In short, the gap between the academic programs of computer science and software engineering programs is far less than the theoretical gap between computer science and software engineering on paper. I agree that universities should provide more of a distinction between the two, and offer CS as a more academic study of the subject with software engineering being the more practical approach.
