These are sales numbers to the retailers and distributors. I wouldn't think that it would be outrageous to think that there are 50+ million iPods sitting on store shelves and in warehouses right now. "Sales" numbers coming from manufacturers are always very, very generous.
Eh. It's a way for them to sell more ads. No big deal. Even local newspapers have design departments that do nothing but help people make better advertisements in their own newspaper.
Bank of America is is one of the worst commercial banks in the country, in my experience. Staying true to the OSS ideals, these guys really should look at getting a branded credit card from a non-profit credit union that serves its customers instead of the shareholders, anyway.
VC money is free. Have you ever heard of a founder of a startup going personally bankrupt when their "business" based on VC money inevitably folds? I know I haven't. Never ever. Not once. Compare that to a real business. I have a real business. I sell products and services, and I make a profit. If I don't make a profit, or I can't pay back my loans, then I'm broke. Personally broke. House gone. Car gone. And I'll be making payments on those loans until they're paid off. When one of the VC bullshitters fold a company, they write off the loss, pay themselves a nice bonus, then turn right around and do the whole thing again. It's absolutely maddening to those of us who choose not to play that game, those of us with at least some semblance of morals, who want to build something good, and provide good people with good jobs. These people just throw other people's money around with no personal responsibility or consequence.
Well, you have to realize that he's working with startups that are awash in free VC money. These are the same companies that *usually* (most startups fail) spend millions on offices, salaries, office equipment, and never make a dime. These companies are all about hype, and not necessarily about producing anything. And hey, what's more stylish than to have Apple logos all around the office, declaring to the world that "I can afford to buy overpriced computers!"?
I agree. I spend a LOT of time in a web browser as well. That doesn't mean that I'm going to try to run my company's financial software through a web browser. That would be suicide.
I agree. Maybe, maybe we'll see some usable web apps, but it won't be for at least another ten years. But I think that there will be lots of apps that don't make any sense to ever run as a web app... graphics apps, financial apps, etc. Anybody using web-based apps for anything mission critical today is going to get burned sooner, rather than later. I wouldn't consider using web apps for anything important until Net connectivity is as reliable and consistent as electricity and water. service. We're not close to that right now.
Not true. Vista runs just fine on a 2-3 year old P4 (I don't know the speed) with 512 MB RAM. I'm typing this post on such a machine right not. The "recommended hardware" thing concerning Vista is largely hype.
It now seems inevitable that applications will live on the web
Oh, please. Web-based software? C'mon. Ajax and "web-based" applications haven't gone anywhere, and they're not going to. I file this alongside of Java's write once, run everywhere, and "push" technology.
no one who cares about computers uses Microsoft's anyway
I don't care what this guys credentials are... he is clueless.
Going into a big storem getting what you want cheaper is some how depressing?
Yes, and it's even more depressing that most people (like you) couldn't care less. Let me guess... you live in a generic apartment (with cable TV!), you wear khaki pants, a shirt two sizes too big to hid your gut, and you drive either a Saturn, or a small Toyota or Honda, right? If I have to explain it, the point is already lost.
Simple. Slashdotters are a subset of a larger culture that values money above all else. If their precious $50/hour cushy programming job is threatened, then it's bad. If somebody else's way of life goes away altogether, they don't give a shit. Same as everybody else. That's why the US looks like a giant Big-Box parking lot today... people can't think beyond their own wallets.
The sad thing is that most people are as clueless as you, and as a result, most of the US looks like one big fucking parking lot. What an empty, depressing life people like you must lead...
I'm not saying that Linux PC's don't exist. I can't believe that there are THAT many pathological liars on/. I was making the point that they guy saying that Linux is taking over the world is off his rocker.
Linux servers are not PC's. And no, I've never seen Linux running on ANY PC, ever. Firefox has nothing to do with Linux. I don't know where you get your information, but I'd be curious to see the source that says Linux desktop market share has exceeded Apple. I've never seen any such thing.
All computer users the world over are turning to Linux.... its a daily push. Mac and Win are going to steadily lose the market. With Dell coming out with preloaded Linux soon... its just a matter of time now. Linux has critical mass and Mac and Win will soon be history links.
Can I ask what you're smoking? Are you from Amsterdam, by any chance? I don't know a single person using Linux, and I've never seen Linux being used on any PC... ever.
Vista has only been shipping on OEM machines for about the past 30 days. I can't imagine that Vista won't be on 90% of all desktop machines in a few years.
As a fan of all of the previous Resident Evil games, I'm pretty disappointed that they released RE4 for the Wii, and I really hope that they release a better version for the PS3. RE has always had excellent graphics and sound, and that's always been a big part of the game. By releasing it on the Wii, they definitely had to cut back the quality of the graphics that they could (will?) have implemented on the PS3, or even the XBox 360 (although I don't like the XBoxes). Although I'm a rabid RE fan, I certainly won't be buying a Wii to play RE4 because I really don't want to play on something with sub-par graphics. The controls for the previous RE's were really top notch, and well-done. I can't imagine adding the Wii's gimmick-y controls will improve the game-play enough to offset the step down in graphics that would be required for the Wii.
OK, it sounds like you're in the middle of taking a high-school level debate class, which is good. Keep up the good work. Unfortunately, trying to have a formal word-by-word debate about somebody's personal subjective opinion is pretty pointless.
Green is my favorite color.
See?
I just heard! There's a new survey out, that says that while 90% of people know it's possible, only 1% of all car owners are planning on replacing their existing engine in their existing car! New car engines are a failure, and nobody's buying them... right?
The sad truth is that the world just doesn't have much use for calculators, any more. The world is too busy worrying about who the Next Top Model is.
So then, did the guy who stole my car stereo, was he "leveraging some non-car thief assets"?

You, sir, obviously haven't seen Die Hard 2, which shows what kinds of bad things happen when people have access to telephones on planes!

He waves his hands in the air and says that profitability doesn't matter. I won't argue that.
Why not? Perhaps he should be telling the 100,000+ plus former auto workers that profitability doesn't matter, and see what they have to say.

Why do that when you can get the same Dell for $200? Oh yeah... Apple customers LOVE vendor lock-in.

People are waiting to buy the latest Service Pack from Apple, so they're not using their computers? Huh?
