Fuck yes, I fucking love Icelanders. I'm so sick of seeing smartphone zombies everywhere. The addicts and the stupid will be addicted and stupid anywhere there's an Internet connection. What a wonderful, thoughtful, human decision to make. Wonderful idea.

    I'll give you one guess.

  4. So what? on Twitter Says Trump Not Immune From Getting Kicked Off (politico.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

Who says they need a "policy" to do anything? They're a public, for-profit corporation. They can decide whatever they want in terms of who they're going to publish, and who they won't. They don't need to create a list of rules and follow them. They make the rules. There's no expectation that it's some kind of "public square", except for idiots. They're a data gathering and marketing company. People who are calling it a "public square" need to get their heads out of their asses and go talk to some real people in the real world.

You're not a "customer" of the company. You're voluntarily giving up all of your "content". They owe you *nothing*.

  5. Re:Yes. on Is Chrome OS Threatening Windows? (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

    A. Microsoft and Google don't track you in the same way. Not even close. Google literally archives and analyzes your emails and documents. Microsoft keeps track of how you're using Windows, not the contents.

    B. Windows is used for a lot of things other than Office and Outlook.

B1. There's no good replacement for Outlook.

If all you're doing is Face/Gram/Tweeting, and you don't care about some Global MegaCorp reading everything you do online, then yes, just stay with a Chromebook.

  6. Gmail users are sloppy on Is Your Email Address Holding You Back? (wsj.com) · · Score: 1, Troll

People who use Gmail tell me a few things:
    1. They don't care about their own privacy. It's worth less than $2/month to them.
    2. They don't see any problem with one or two giant companies holding a hegemony over a large part of the Net.
    3. They're lazy.
    4. They're not technologically saavy.

It depends on the context, of course, but those are all the things that I think when I see "@gmail.com" (or any other "Free" email address).

  7. Buh-bye Slashdot on Amazon Is Ready To Take on Apple and Spotify in Streaming Music (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

    That's a fucking shame.

You don't care that Amazon owns everything? All you care about is what's "cheapest"? That was my point of this thread... I don't understand why nobody cares that Amazon is trying to own everything.

  10. Re:Welcome to future dystopia, Amazon users! on Amazon Is Ready To Take on Apple and Spotify in Streaming Music (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

Or just... don't stream music? We happily lived for decades without streaming music. You can still purchase and listen to your own music (I do).

Or, stream your own music? There used to be lots of technologically-saavy on Slashdot who used to do this kind of stuff (I do).

Um, you don't understand this discussion.

    1. Your use of "TDS" or "Trump Derangement Syndrome" tells me that you're a real prick. Trump is an insane, stupid, mean, lying piece of shit human being. People who dislike him aren't "deranged". People who support him, however, might be.
    2. The parent post you ignorantly replied to was saying that Trumpafarians tend to worship money above all else, and since this is a discussion about Amazon, Trumpsters must love Jeff Bezos (and Amazon), because he's very rich. Hence, they spend money there and adore all things Amazon.

  12. Re:Welcome to future dystopia, Amazon users! on Amazon Is Ready To Take on Apple and Spotify in Streaming Music (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

I think they care, but the problem is Amazon hasn't done anything that would really betray our trust in the company.

Interesting perspective. Amazon hasn't done anything to earn my trust.

  13. Welcome to future dystopia, Amazon users! on Amazon Is Ready To Take on Apple and Spotify in Streaming Music (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 2

So, does *nobody* really care that one giant MegaCorp is trying to own everything? Even a formerly anti-corporate message board is full of sycophants who can't get enough of Amazon. Me and my family are the only people that I know that don't give any money to Amazon. What happened to everybody else?

I would. But they are all preoccupied with taking my guns.

I doubt that. It sounds like you're too self-centered to care about anybody but yourself (and your precious guns).

  15. Ceiling fans work wonders.

Absolutely, they do. Along with some strategically opened windows, too, when possible.

  16. ... and do you have any info on that single point dump recycling idea/inventor? I think that's super interesting. I would imagine that at some point in the future, when some resources start to get more scarce, that we might see people mining garbage dumps for materials, too.

  17. The best thing to do is to created less waste, to begin with. We, for example, take reusable containers for carry-out, whenever possible. We do our best not to buy food that comes in single-use plastic containers. I agree 100% that it's better to make less waste in the first place, than to try to recycle it afterwards.

  18. You AC trolls are really sucking wind today. Try again.

  19. Speak for yourself. Me and my family are doing everything we can to lower our energy and plastic consumption.

You could get off your ass and do something, too, if you really wanted to. It sounds like you're just making excuses for yourself.

  20. I don't have things shipped to my house.
I don't buy food in plastic, whenever possible.
    I don't use plastic bags.
I ride my bike or walk, when possible. When not possible, I drive a high MPG small car.
    I recycle aggressively.
I keep my house thermostat at 80 degrees, when AC is necessary.
I fix things instead of buying new things, whenever possible.
    Go fuck yourself, troll.

  21. I disagree. It's important in the vein of public discourse, to make it clear that these conspiracy theorists are in the minority, and their wackjob ideas are not mainstream.
