Well I dont think rote memorization is the solution or a measurement. Rather the ability to think and reason. So a better street question would be to ask someone to prove to you that the sky is blue, or that gravity exists. They would have to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the scientific method and reason. I could care less if someone could explain to me the cell theory, or the laws of thermodynamics. Now if they know how to either reason them out or research them, THAT is what we need to see more of. Rote memorization is what gets us into messes, rationality, objectivity, and a level head are what solves them. Look at all your classmates or ex classmates who could ace any test but I'd be dammed if they could figure out a Rubik's cube or derive an equation.

Might I ask for some sources? One thing you would want to check is the contract. I am still pulling things out of my memory here but I think in the original contract there was a clause that stated the show must have an arc, there has to be a conclusion they are working towards. One of the things I like about Lost is that it is a well crafted arc, you can watch it happen when something random occurs in season 1 or two, becomes explained in season 4 or 5, and it cant be incidental as it is integral to the storyline that so and so did this or that early on, or the story wouldn't be where it is today.

I'm not a huge JJ fan, I do like the majority of his stuff but cloverfield was no good, and fringe is just flat out cheezy, more along the lines that you think Lost is. However, to each their own, if Lost doesn't reach you on an entertaining level then oh well, there are lots of shows to choose from. But, even if lost were the crappiest show written and all your allegations are true, then that means JJ is some kind of psychological genius in that he is able to get so many people to watch it.

Not to sound like a fanboy here but if nothing has happened then you aren't paying attention. The show is designed to be subtle I will admit, in season 3 it did get a bit dry but that was about the time they were playing around with the number of episodes until the end of the show, so I think for about 5 episodes they were dilly dallying to buy time.

However, rarely do I watch a show that packs so much into one episode as lost does...the problem is...they just don't conclude anything like the CSI lovers out there want. Outside of 24 there isn't another show like it, even 24 is short by comparison, most other shows wrap things up each episode. The closest thing I can think of is anime. We are in season 5 now and we are finally getting closure on a lot of stuff. But the show isn't for everyone, plenty of people dont like it and I respect that. I despise Survivor but I know better than to say it in an open crowd ;)

I am pretty heavily involved in the church (LCMS), and I have found most people live according to their own moral code within the church. Not because they are malicious or anything but rather because the average churchgoer has failed to read their scripture or practice their faith. Atheists, as opposed to Agnostics, on average have at least spent some time rationalizing their faith. Many Christians cant say that about their faith. LCMS is probably the best sector of Christianity when it comes to education and rationality. Ever want some good reads check out the Book of Concord and Christian Dogmatic...both Lutheran works, a good history of why things are the way they are after the reformation. Dry but really good for a person who loves to research religion.

Just curious, were your parents Ex-Catholics? I have found that many agnosics and people I have met who are apathetic about Christianity have been ones who grew up in the Catholic church. Would be curious to know if this is true in your case.

I think you may be reading pascal's wager wrong, or taking a side I have not noted. Pascal's Wager in essence says that since God cannot be rationalized, you should act as though He exists as you have everything to gain and nothing to lose. In the case of Christianity you don't have to DO anything, heck you dont even have to live a moral life. But you do have to trust that God will accept you warts and all. Open rejection is really the only way that you can lose eternity, no matter what the Catholics preach.

However this puts me in a pickle, because if it turns out Islam is correct, I am screwed, but not too horribly ;)

Good talking, I dont get many good debates from the other side of the coin, too many people tie up their emotions in the fray. There is good discussion to be had if you dont make it personal. I wish colleges still did open debates between profs like they used to on matters like this.

I usually assume positive atheism, however I would say Atheists are acting on faith due to Pascal's Wager. Don't get me wrong I am not one of the individuals that believes atheists are a bunch of idiots up to malicious shenanigans because they cant stand to live under moral law. Rather I have found they are usually individuals that have found a reason to hate religion, usually Christianity. The atheists I know are good moral individuals, intelligent, however they mistrust Christianity. Reasons vary but that has been my experience. But it is my belief that rationally, atheism has less evidence than most of the major faiths. Since everything has an eternal consequence and Atheism requires an assumption that there is no God without proof, it therefore doesn't just require faith, but a lot of it.

Outside of a theology degree, a CS degree, leading several bible studies, married to a woman with her MS in Genetics, about to get her PharmD, 3 of my closest friends are MDiv.... I know nothing of science and theology. What I do know is that in science you should start agnostic to get a good feel for the experiment. If you hypothesize and expect certain results that is one thing, but to say "I WILL get these results" is an entirely different scenario. Just because you are an academic in religious studies in no way makes you right or an expert, nor does a theology degree make me an expert. I personally favor Christianity, so does my wife. When doing scientific experiments she set aside her religious beliefs and accepted what happened rather than what priests/pastors tell her should happen. Oddly enough, for her the two never conflicted. Unfortunately for atheists, if all the evidence points to a set of aliens being our God or that we live in a space time bubble created by His noodliness then they will refuse and try different experiments, or they would not be atheists because they are willing to accept the idea that there is a god. There is NO WAY logically in any philosophical debate that you can disprove or prove God, it is impossible, therefore atheism is just as much a religion and based on faith as any deity based belief.
